Well saying that the picture is dark might be misleading. For me, at least, it's the fact that the glasses themselves are dark that makes the movie darker. I think. That's the way I remember it being for me, but it's been a while since I saw a movie in 3D (I stopped trying when I realized the effect didn't work for me.) Maybe the picture is darker? I don't know. But you are looking at the picture through lenses that are shaded dark like sunglasses. It's better than having everything tinted red/blue, but it still mutes colors and makes things darker.

One film I remember being dark to the point that it nearly ruined the movie for me was Up. The posts I made here about that movie when I first saw it were very negative, and I think my disappointment had more to do with my problems with 3D than the film itself. (The film is wonderful and I love it now.)

I should probably also mention that I have night blindness.  Simply letting my eyes adjust to the darkness doesn't really solve the problem. 

It's probably not that big of a problem for most people, though.  Even in that guy's letter, he admits that it's a problem that can probably be fixed eventually with improving technology.
