One thing I don't understand about 3D complaints is the darker picture. Are the theaters I go to just better than others? Does it depend on the movie (Avatar is a fairly bright movie, so was meet the robinsons. I haven't seen Alice in Wonderland or Green hornet, but they looked dark in previews)?

You can probably figure out exactly how much the light is reduced, by considering that they're using two projectors (of what brightness compared to a single 2D projector?), the transparency of the glasses, etc. But I'm guessing it's something like a factor of 2.

That's not very much, considering the eye is a logarithmic detector of light. It's a reduction of 3dB.

I would imagine your eye could even compensate to some degree (eg., by dilating more)

It might be astonishing to learn that the light in an office has two-thousand times less lux than direct sunlight. Yet it's not like it's impossible to see in an office. I rarely if ever think of it as being "dim".

I think there are some people who will turn off ambient lights even just to watch TV, which I almost never do.
