Man, that part with Gobi could have been the hardest part in the game. If I had to fight two enemies underwater, and couldn't run from them, I was dead.
And there were no other enemies that gave enough experience to level up.
Anyway, some rigmarole later, I made it to ox's town, then back to Gobi's town, then got the gang back to Gobi's town, and beat a ghost (more like a Grim Reaper) hanging over Ox. I think I was supposed to make progress in the game after that, but I went back to the Krypt and got the B-Rang. B is not short for boome, but rather "broken". So, I can't use it yet. I got a few other items in the Krypt that I had missed, but no gold bar. I'll need to return to a few other older areas now that I have more party members to help explore. |

I beat Panzer Dragoon Saga. Holy crap, that ending was even worse than FO said it was.
I think the only way the final dungeon would have been more irritating is if you got into random battles. I didn't mind the maze part so much as the longass stretches of holding B. Game Over Count: Zero. |

I also didn't like that the ending was unclear as to what happened to Edge. He promised to return to Azel, but it would appear he didn't make it out of Sestren. Did he die with Sestren, did he and the dragon move onto a higher plane of existence, or did he make it out after all? If the latter is true, then why didn't he return to Azel? I don't know if there was some bonus epilogue for getting zero Game Overs, but (spoiler) after the credits roll, there's some epilogue with this guy with a scarf and hat covering most of his face asking some guy for directions, the guy is asking him why he needs to go to such a dangerous place, then the guy with the scarf takes off on his coolia. What I gathered from it was Edge made it out a Sestren and was looking for Azel, and the dragon devolved back into a coolia. Not that that makes the ending any less stupid. Also... the "ultimate" dragon is fucking UGLY.

science of discworld: well, it gets funnier when the wizards start experimenting with the roundworld(mini-earth) project. interesting "science"
chapter about how the earth might be in greater danger of global cooling than global warming... but it shouldn't be a problem until several thousand years
later.
Also... the "ultimate" dragon is fucking UGLY. the more powerful pokermans are almost always ugly. the hauptman assault mec in MW4 is pretty ugly and blocky. i don't understand why, in 2002, fasa would still use such ugly blocky mec designs which reminds me of "gritty" 80's sci-fi movie machinery. but the hauptman is probably the only mec(i've seen) with crotch laser slots.

I went back to a couple of locations, but couldn't get everything. Ox still wasn't able to move some furniture. (In Auria?) We did find something at
the top of the floating tower that I assume will come into play at the end of the game. And Karn got a spell that lets him combine with Gobi and Bo.
That's useful, I guess, since it gives him over 450 HP. (For comparison, I don't think anyone else has even 200)
I rescued the other members of Ox's species (the males) and got one of them to fix my B-Rang. I now have to rescue the females from the dark dragons. |
|||||

So, I rescued the ox women. Ox's wife is pregnant. I had a dumb moment when I was looking at Ox's stats, and thought, "Why does it say 'Zero
Times' next to 'Intelligence' for Ox? He's not that dumb, is he?" No, it's because his name is Ox.
I then was able to get to the moving town in the desert. At the end, I fought three ghost bosses (two might have been identical to ones I've already beaten -- the third was new, but not that hard) and awoke Bleu. This game has lots of characters that like to sleep in bed. She sent me on another mission, then went back to bed. (In fact, before you go to that town, you get the item that lets you get there from a guy who didn't want to get out of bed!) I went into an underwater volcano. But by then, I was so tired -- I don't know if it was the game, or something else -- that I couldn't play anymore. Anyway, I've played this game for a while now, so I think I can start posting some opinions. I don't know if I'd say it's that special. Unlike Secret of Mana, though, I'm not at a loss for why other people would think it's (at least a little) special. It is, like I've said, in many ways a typical RPG, not all that far removed from what was on the NES. The story isn't really told all that well. A lot of it involves getting some random item that lets you do some random quest. Example, getting the statue that lets you enter the town in the desert. Now, why would a statue let you enter a town? And the original motivation of the game, rescuing Ryu's sister, is mostly a distant memory by this point. I've talked about this a little with FO, and she said (rightly) that it's not completely random, because at least you never get too far from dealing with the threats of the dark dragons. Even that goofy part where you have to have those cassowary-like birds chase after you because you took one of their eggs eventually related to the dark dragons. She said this is as opposed to, say, Lufia 2, where everything really is random (I can't comment on that too much, since I've never played Lufia 2). Still, I think the story could have been flowed a little more smoothly. The music is good. I wouldn't really say it's great. There's some variety (Diefwolf once made a point about how all the animal-people's cultures were distinct and had different music to convey that). I think I like *parts* of songs more than full songs, though. I like part of the title theme (mostly the beginning). I liked the ending of the first normal battle theme. I don't like the second battle theme (it changes part way through the game) nearly as much. The second overworld music is good. The stuff with the different party members and the combining is at least some attempt at being original (As opposed to, say, Lunar, which had nothing original). The game kind of holds back on the difficulty. One unusual thing about this game is that, unlike in almost every other RPG I've played, you don't necessarily inevitably take damage during run-of-the-mill fights. The fight order is almost set in stone by your "action" attribute. For example, Ox ALWAYS goes last. And depending on the enemies you fight, you might have all of your characters attack before they do, so you can kill them before they get an attack in. |

Now, why would a statue let you enter a town? That reminded me - there was one part in Crystalis that has always bothered me - When you get the Broken Statue and then you get the Glowing Lamp to fix it. How does a lamp fix a broken statue?? And the original motivation of the game, rescuing Ryu's sister, is mostly a distant memory by this point.I don't really agree because the whole reason you're in the situation you're in is because you tried to hop a boat to Scande, but it got sunk. It's sort of like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly in the sense that the main plot is finding the gold, but they get into all of these misadventures along the way. Trust me, just when you think you're gonna finally arrive at Scande, there's gonna be something else to hold you back. But as for my BOF vs. Lufia 2 argument, yes, those things are almost always Dark Dragons, whereas in Lufia 2 it's almost always things that come out of nowhere and then are forgotten afterwards. And I think if Ryu had to whine every so often about needing to rescue his sister or get revenge on the Dark Dragons or whatever, it would just be annoying. I also didn't like Lufia 2's characters as much as Breath of Fire's.

I'm stuck on Mission 4 in SoS (Hard) mode, and loving it even more now. There's a Blitz in the third room after you clear out the Frosts and
Scarecrows, and there's little room to dodge when he goes from yellow to red. He will pretty much kill me if you gets you when he's red by grabbing
you, shocking you for what seems like forever, then exploding... Blitz is this game's Shadow, in that you need to shoot at it when it becomes material then
strike the weakpoint when it shows Blitz is a giant lizardman that's surrounded by electricity, and warps around the room as lightning, then either claws
you to death or fires massive lightning beams at you. Best normal enemy in the game. You never fight them with Nero on Devil Hunter (Normal), only Dante, and
they are in places with ample dodging space. Since I'm encountering Blitz so early, I'm guessing SoS is going to good.
And for the record, I enjoyed DMC1 more than this game. Is that game "fun"...? O_o

And I think if Ryu had to whine every so often about needing to rescue his sister or get revenge on the Dark Dragons or whatever, it would just be annoying.Yeah, but in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, the gold is NEVER far from your mind. They don't just mention it at the beginning (actually, maybe at the end of act 1), then not again until they get to the grave at the end. One misadventure is when they get captured as confederates by Angel Eyes. But that relates back to the gold, because Angel Eyes tortures them to get information on the gold, and lets them leave the camp to get it. If you think about it, they tie a lot of stuff back into the gold. Or think about Star Wars. You could say, "It would be annoying to have them constantly mention the main plot points -- rescuing the princess or destroying the Death Star." But actually they do always go back to those things. They even cut to the what's happening on the Death Star with Princess Leia as Luke and Han are doing whatever. If you think about just about ANY good movie, they never just forget about the main plot or don't talk about it. Like, in Unforgiven, a lot of time goes on from the beginning to when they finally kill the people they were hired to kill, but they always talk about what it'll be like to kill them, what it was like to kill other people, etc. The only reason you're saying that it would be "annoying" to be reminded of what Ryu is really trying to do is because you're imagining it to be annoying. There are plenty of other stories where it is not annoying. How much time would it really have taken for them to have said a few words about going to Scande because they thought Ryu's sister was there? It would make complete sense there. I know that games are not movies, but, heck, think about A Link to the Past. That game isn't even much of a story-telling game, compared to most RPGs. But when you rescue the maidens in the dark world dungeons, they say something about rescuing Zelda or defeating Ganon. Was that horribly annoying? |

How much time would it really have taken for them to have said a few words about going to Scande because they thought Ryu's sister was there? It would make complete sense there. But it is mentioned in the beginning. And wasn't it mentioned again when Nina talks to Ryu when he's asleep in the part where you first take control of her? Maybe you missed that... And it never really seemed far from my mind to me, because it always seemed to me like you were just about to get to Scande, but something would happen to keep you from getting there. And not only does that happen, but you find out exactly why. Example with Auria: The Dark Dragons aren't just there for no real reason - they're there because they're trying to take control of the commerce center of the world. I think another thing you're forgetting is that the main plot isn't just "save Ryu's sister". It's that you're trying to get the Goddess Keys before the Dark Dragons do. That was actually mentioned in the opening pre-game cinema as being the main plot before the whole ordeal with Sara began, and you've certainly been finding and hearing about the Goddess Keys. And as for not going back to any of that, well, at the end of Act 2 you just saw a cinema with Jade. The last time you saw Sara, Jade was advancing towards her. I'm not saying it's a "great" story, it's not. But I think it works as far as that type of game is concerned, and I never really thought the plot was the best part of that game anyway. It didn't really seem to me like any RPG's plot was all that special until Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger when they started to become more focused on. (I was going to say something more here, but can't articulate it at this point.) I know what you're thinking is "How can you like Breath of Fire when it's so random, yet you didn't like Lufia 2 for being random?" But Lufia 2 is WAY more guilty of not going back to its beginning set-up - You NEVER see Daos again after the opening cinema. And the Sinistrals have very little to do with anything that goes on. I think they blow up a town at one point, but there's no real motivation for why they do it. It's just occurred to me, though, that I haven't played that game in awhile, so I'm having difficulty remembering things about it. The funny thing about Lufia 2 is that I still gave it 3 stars. It's okay and has some good puzzles and music. But most of my negativity towards it is justification for not giving it higher than that.

I started Neutopia 2, and I've already cleared the first three dungeons. Is it any better than Neutopia 1? Ever so slightly if at all. Combat's
just as clunky as the first game, and the character moves slower than I recall Jazeta moving (although there might have been an item that sped up Jazeta in the
first game).

I played some Mass Effect. I was supposed to find the daughter of the woman who's helping the traitor Seran. When I found the right planet to land on, I
found myself in control of a tough ground vehicle with a decent gun. There was a mix of stationary robots with heavy firepower and regular ground troops. The
stationary things were too tough to fight outside of the vehicle. They'd kill a character with one hit. I eventually got fairly good at fighting them
without the vehicle taking too much damage. You can do an extremely brief jump and hover, kind of like the Landmaster Tank in SF64, but it only lasts a second.
It was fun whenever I got to fight regular guys with the vehicle as they'd die almost instantly. Eventually, you reach a point where you have to proceed ahead on foot, and that was a more up close and personal kind of fighting, actually a lot of fun. It culminated in a boss battle of sorts that I lost the first time. It's not that you have a single super-strong enemy. There was one strong one (but not overwhelming) assisted by tons of regular enemies. I eventually found a spot to hide where they either had to come to me or I could sneak out and pick them off one at a time. Once the actual boss was all alone, it was extremely easy. I'm playing on normal difficulty instead of resorting to easy, and on a game that people say combat is frustrating to get familiar with, so I'm happy that I'm doing so well. Following this, I entered some ancient ruins where there was a little more fighting. I ended up finding this mining laser that I had to activate but it wanted a code. After a lot of looking around for a clue, I decided to figure it out. It was the kind of code where it matches the buttons on the controller. So for example, Red, Blue, Yellow, Green. When you get an entry wrong, it says failed, code reset. So I assumed that it was changing to a new code to keep you from guessing it. But not really. I just figured out what color it wanted for each step through trial and error and it took about 20 seconds. I overestimated the puzzle is what I'm trying to say. After one final big battle, I got a new party member, some achievement points, watched a cool escape scene, and returned to the ship. Once I got there, I had conversations with every party member and saved for the day. I'm pretty sure I've got two planets to visit and I can do them in either order. I could probably also pursue some sidequests. I've been playing about 6.5 hours. The Xbox 360 kept my room a little warmer. And I needed all I could get. It's a cold night in Jersey. Note that the wind chill is not 8, it's 8 below zero.

Breath of Fire 2 is far worse about having something happen at the beginning and then not mentioning it again until the very end. At least, like FO said, you
pretty much know that you're always heading towards Scande in Breath of Fire 1, but in 2, it takes forever for the story to get back to what happened at
the beginning and a lot of what happens only speculatively relates to it. I think the problem in both games is that you're in control of a mute hero, so
that's probably why it isn't mentioned continuously.

Last night, I did the part where I was shrunk and killed the roaches that were antagonizing the mice.
Today, I beat three bosses in a row: First, the flower. Then, the bridge-builder who was turned into a monster. Then, the purple guy that made the flower. This kind of backs up my point above about how the game holds back on challenge. There wasn't anything particularly notable about any of those bosses. The flower didn't even have any attack that hit everyone, and his attacks against single characters were easy to heal. The next two bosses would occasionally hit the whole party, but not very often. |

I was going to replay Equinox on an emulator and maybe make a little shrine for it like I did for some other games.
But ZSNES crashes whenever I pick up an apple. SNES9X doesn't work with my USB controller. (Keyboarding this game is out of the question.) BSNES doesn't take screen captures. So, I guess I'll have to find something else to do...

I clearned the fourth dungeon of Neutopia 2.
The dungeons themselves are somewhat better than the first game, but the combat is even more awkward. I don't recall using the Fire Wand (or in Neutopia 2, the Wind Wand) on an enemy and having the recoil fling the enemy into me. Here, it happens all the freaking time. I found a Flail in the fourth dungeon, which is like the hookshot in Link to the Past, except you can spin it around and I don't think it pulls you across chasms. I went about having fun with it, until I looked at my Gold and wondered what happened to it all. It costs 10G a sling to use the Flail : ( |

I did a Mass Effect sidequest. I was looking at the various planets. Most of them you can't land on, just survey, but some are explorable. And one had a
distress signal coming from it.
So I rode over to the source of the signal and this giant sand worm comes out of the ground and attacks. I got about ten Game Overs to this thing. If it's acid-looking attack hits you, it pretty much destroys your vehicle. If the boss touches you at all directly, it destroys you. If you're riding over the part of the sand the boss is going to rise up from, it destroys you. Eventually, I managed to keep moving to avoid his attacks, and I learned all the spots where he would rise up from the sand, so it was just a matter of wearing him down. I only learned afterwards that the tank has a secondary attack. I don't know what kind of difference it would have made, if any. Anyway, it turns out that the distress signal was a trap to have another group of guys killed by the sand worm.

Beat Mission 4 on SOS, got owned by some Frosts and Mephistos on the next stage. SOS Mode feels more like "DMC" than Devil Hunter mode does, its
quite an enjoyable jump. Bael's (mission 4's boss) tactics even seemed different. Enemies deal more much damage, and etc.
