Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I just heard "Eyes on Me" from Final Fantasy 8 today for the first time (well, I heard a midi of it before, but it seemed okay in midi format without any lyrics). But when I heard it with the lyrics... Oh man...it's basically a Celine Dion wannabe-song and is as embarrassing as "I am the Wind", which is also a Celine Dion-ish song. "Small of Two Pieces" from Xenogears is also Celine Dion-ish, except that the lyrics at least had some interesting metaphors, the woman's voice was okay, and it had a good guitar solo. The lyrics in "Eyes on Me" are really banal. The question is...what is with all of this? Were all of these composers blown away by Titanic? Is it that when it came time to write a love song for these games, "My Heart Will Go On" was so popular that they thought that's how a love song should sound? The one from FFXII was really bad. I Am The Wind is crap too, but at least is was an isolated incident. Konami even took it out of the more recent releases of SOTN.

My mother used to be a fan of hers (she might still be, but now I don't have to listen to it), and her trademark is oversinging everything. I think basically everyone who has been on American Idol is trying to be Whitney Houston. (Based on commericals -- I don't watch the show) Man, it's one thing for the women to be trying to sing like that...but what the hell is up with MEN trying to sing like that??? I don't think there is a single professional male singer who sings like the ones on that show try to. Especially like that one guy who was trying to sing "Living on a Prayer" Whitney Houston-style. I'm sure they had the songs written by then and it was just a stylistic coincidence. But I do see what your saying. On another but similar note.........I'm not a huge anime-video game music fan,.........well not as much as some people here who say it's their favorite genre of music. I just don't get when people say that their favorite song is some anime song or video game song ( a song with lyrics) when -lyrically - the translations doesn't quite fit comfortably into the English vernacular. For instance " I love this girl, she's the best in the world" sounds right to us, but in Japanese it might be " The girl that I feel the most love for is the best one that the world can offer my personal love." Now, It might sound correct in Japanese, and we can understand it, but it just doesn't "fit" right. So, when someone gets all misty eyed naming their favorite anime or video game song, talking about the singer and the lyrics, I take it with a grain of salt. Maybe they're blinded by a love of anime or video games, but I know THEY know that those lyrics sound strange.

But as for game music, most people who tell me that game music is their favorite "genre" specifically cite that it's because they prefer music without lyrics. There was even a recent Q&A where someone said that. I would guess that less than 1% of game music has lyrics anyway. I don't know much about awkwardness in anime lyrics. The few anime songs I like don't seem to have anything awkward in them (like Sonia's Tenchi Universe opening theme) and Alchemy of Love doesn't even have a Japanese version. I do know that my lyrics for Koibito no Inaiyoru from Soul Blazer were better than the official lyrics and neither the Japanese nor the English version of the Alundra ending song were appropriate.
