Does anyone know what exactly are the instruments used in these videogame songs are? I'm having a hard time pinpointing what they are...and I, uhh,
hope you don't mind this total stranger barging in and asking this :
1) 'Hero's theme', Final Fantasy Tactics. The two string instruments played at low and high pitches that comprise the songs melody...A harp of some
kind is the best guess I have...Not sure if it was put up on this site, so here's a link: http://www.ffrepublic.com/soundtracks/album/ff-tactics-ost/disc-1-14-hero-s-theme.mp3This
instrument is also used I believe in Tactics Ogre in the song 'A Cygnet'...I personally can't get enough of this sound and would love to hear more
of it.
2) 'The Shrine of the Lake' and 'Kline's Dream', Alundra. That high-pitch piano like instrument that is featured in both melodies...When I
first heard it I assumed it was just a normal piano but after listening to a lot of piano since then my guess is it's something different, like possibly a
kind of keyboard...Another sound that just resonates.
3) 'Another Marbule', Chrono Cross, 'Pearl Dance Song', Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The sound that makes up the majority of the former
and plays in parts of the latter. I've heard this used in music from time to time but always done sparingly... I find it to be one of the more uplifting
sounds that is out there in music...
If you're wondering what the reason for asking this is...well, I'm trying to revitalise my interest in music (it's a bit fading right now, too much
generic sounding piano in my collection) and I thought I might be able to do that if I look for music which features one of the instruments responsible for
some of these resonant sounds that I've heard in game music before...
Anyway, that's the idea, if someone could help me out here I'd appreciate it...But to make this less selfish, here are some pieces of music I've
come across that I happen to love and would imagine anyone would enjoy:
1) 'Staff Credit', Final Fantasy Tactics: http://www.ffrepublic.com/soundtracks/album/ff-tactics-ost/disc-2-29-staff-credit.mp3
(one of the bettter ending songs out there I think, my favorite parts of it are when it crescendoes with high intensity several times about midway through and
yet stays harmonious and, especially, that serene synth that plays during the very beginning which is reminiscent of the synth used in the beginning of the
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past credits theme...another sound I absolutely adore and could probably never tire of)
3) 'You were there', Ico: http://omikron.bluelaguna.net/ico-melody-in-the-mist-ost-soundtrack/16%20ICO%20-You%20were%20there-.mp3(another
great ending song, beautiful vocals (which are sung by one of the lead singers in the great boy's choir Libera) and poignant lyrics)
3) Untamed Heart, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/380/40 (possibly my favorite piece
of gaming music, there is something about the use of instruments and the melody that makes it have an otherwordly, almost trancendent feel...)
4) Endless Dream, Dawn of Mana: http://omikron.bluelaguna.net/dawn-of-mana-ost-soundtrack/318%20The%20Endless%20Dream.mp3:
(just disovered this one, has a really nice melody to it, not as memorable I'd say as other game ending songs, but I think it's still worth hearing)
5) Thougtful Reflections, Beyond Good and Evil: http://gh.ffshrine.org/song/785/25 (nice mystical quality to
this one, it's very simple, minimal piano and synth effects but I think still very effective)
6) Your Voice, Legend of Legaia: Duel Saga : http://omikron.bluelaguna.net/legaia2ost/Disc%201/19%20-%20Your%20Voice.mp3
(this one is just stunning, the crystal clarity of the chimes used in the song really take your breath away...they took mine away anyway)
Hmm......it's amazing what insomnia can do...
