First, Bobby Fischer. This is the guy that was racist against Jews, and was definitely 50%, and possibly 100%, Jewish.

Then Sam the Butcher (from the Brady Bunch, played by Allen Marvin).

Just now, Heath Ledger. He apparently overdosed on drugs, causing cardiac arrest. He was discovered alive, but died soon after. There are people at this board who are older than he is.

Also, Brad Renfro died before Bobby Fischer. But I barely even knew that he existed, despite that I saw The Client in theaters.

I was wondering how this was goint to affect the filming of the new Batman movie, but it appears that the movie is actually already finished. Gee, I wonder what they'd do in a situation if someone died before they were finished, but had a significant amount done. CGI the rest?

Oh, yeah, I forgot about that one. But I'd be surprised if a big name/budget movie in a franchise like Batman would pull a stunt like that in today's world.

Well, it would probably be more awkward to explain in the middle of a movie. There's also the change in Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies, but when it's between movies it's not as strange as it would be if for 1/2 of the movie there's one actor playing a role, and then in the second half there's another actor with no explanation.

I heard one of the bad guys in Air Force One died during filming, and his stunt double had to take over the role for the rest of the movie. Is this true?

I agree with Berardinelli on this:

Ledger's death doesn't touch me personally. A member of my family died about 24 hours before him. That had an impact upon me. That opened up a hole that will eventually close but will take some time. Compared to that, Ledger is a footnote. I feel for his friends and family. I am, however, less sympathetic where his fans are concerned. I don't doubt the genuineness of their grief but I have never understood how the passing of a public personality can cause the same outpouring of tears and pain that the passing of a loved one can. Few fans know the man; they know his characters, and those will endure for a long time. In the grand scheme of things, Ledger's death is no more tragic than that of an unknown 28-year old flagman who was hit and killed by a careless driver speeding through a construction zone. When it comes to celebrities, one can acknowledge the loss without shedding a tear. I save my tears for those who are close to me.

I've seen his fans cry about how talented he was, and what a shame his talent didn't continue to shine, etc. Yeah, but, even if he didn't commit suicide, he still left his mark on the world.. I know people personally who are very talented and never got the chance he got.

Yeah, I feel exactly the same. I also don't feel a lot of sympathy for someone who was apparently foolish enough to take sleeping pills, anti-depressants, and who knows what else while being sick with pneumonia. It doesn't even sound like he was an addict, just taking a bunch of different things he was prescribed without really considering the consequences.

Going back to an earlier question, Heath Ledger might have finished his role as the Joker, but he WAS in the middle of another movie, for Terry Gilliam. So, who knows how that will turn out.

I'm going to be sad when Prince dies because I just know he's going to have one of his Jehova's Witness buddies destroy the masters to all of his unreleased "sinner" music from before he sucked.

Other than that I don't see the point of mourning celebrities either.

Death is always tragic, but the death of Heath Ledger affects me more than the death of some unknown flagger who got hit in a traffic zone because:

1) I'm 28, too.
2) I've seen Heath Ledger movies and enjoyed them, whereas an unknown flagger has done nothing to directly affect MY life. It might not be a huge difference, but it is there.
3) I have family members (not immediate ones, of course) who have had less impact on my life than Heath Ledger. Just because technically we share some of the same DNA doesn't mean a death affects me.
4) Entertainment is important to me and I have a selfish desire to see the most talented people in the industry continue to do their work at the best level possible. Death prevents that.

So yeah, I think people who grieve over celebrities have every right. I don't think it makes them abnormal. It's all about your frame of mind and where your priorities lie. Most of my time is spent enjoying entertainment or critiquing it, so I guess that's why I would care. Anyway, I'm not in tears over it or anything, but I'm definitely saddened. I was depressed when Robert Jordan passed, as well.

Here's the way I think of it. Would Heath Ledger give me $1,000 if I asked? No. So screw him.

Then I think, would anyone I know give me $1,000 if I asked? No. So, the moral here is, screw everybody.

I heard Brandon Lee was almost done with the Crow, though.

Maybe more dramatic examples would be cases in which the actor is already dead. Example, the historical figures in Forest Gump, or Laurence Olivier in Sky Captain.

I've never cried over a celebrity death, but there have been times when I've felt sad over the sudden passing of a celebrity that I knew well, such as Phil Hartman, Jim Henson, and Sergei Grinkov. Especially since all of those people were still active up until the moment they died and the effects of their loss would be immediately apparent.

But, really, it kind of surprises me that a movie critic like Berardinelli would feel that way. Movies rarely work if they don't get you to care about their characters, and if you can feel sadness for the death of a fictional character in a movie, then why not for the real death of actors who portray them?
