So, the Chrono Trigger retranslation is out, and... |

It really seems to suck. Aside from a patch, they have the whole thing viewable in HTML with side by side comparison to the original.

Lucca: The way she disappeared... Lucca: The way that girl vanished isn't the way Does anyone really think the second one sounds better? It just uses more words for no reason and sounds unnatural. The more I read of this, I think Babelfish could have done better. |

Yeah, but it's closer to the original Japanese, and therefore automatically better.
Seriously, what the hell? Jina/Mom: How long are you sleeping? Now is the happiest time for me...... Ah, welcome. The festival's since this year is the 1000th year |

I was hoping that this was an unpolished version, but nothing indicates that. I'm really not in the mood to actually set myself up to play it and see for
sure.
Here's the link to the main page, and if you scroll down, you'll find the other chapters in HTML form. http://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Retranslation.html |

A Millennial Fair? Here? Millennial Festival? 1000th year since founding? There's no other way to say it, this is absolutely horrendous and the thought of someone playing the game for the first time using this translation makes me sad. |

Magus-sama...It uses "sama" in an English translation? So, it's pretentious, too. Yeah, I don't have much to add, but the English in that retranslation is horrible. So pointless. |

Actually, I do have something to add.
Let's forget this retranslation exists. Now imagine you heard there would be a retranslation. Would you care? If so, why? What is wrong with the official translation? Why would you expect something else to be better? My belief is that the official translation is about as good as it would get (this bad translation just gives me evidence). Changes between the original Japanese and the English might make for an interesting (or not) trivia page. But changing 'Ozzy' back to 'Vinegar' does not seem to merit retranslating the entire game.

If it was one of the chapters in html form, they just caused it to hang for a little while for me.

Stupid. It's not like the translations even served to change or clarify the story. It just made things more drawn out and awkwardly phrased.
"There are three types of armor" becomes "There are three specialized specializations for special armoring. The type of armoring that goes on the head of the person who is being armorized, the armoring that is armored on the body of the armored armorization armor armor armor, and body." I'm going to go to gamefaqs and see how many people wet their pants in excitement over this shit. |

Shinobi used "Hiruko-sama", but that was a heavily Japanese game anyway.

Unless the game takes place in Japan, no character should be called -sama, -san, or -chan... ever. This is especially true for games that take place in a
fantastical medieval european setting.
