I'm gathering, though, that by "creationists" the general definition is something more along the lines of the modern American militant moral majority types rather than people who have religious beliefs in the supernatural.

The very definition of supernatural--meaning outside of nature--dictates that natural evidence will not support it. The only concept in logic that gives
evidence to the existence of anything supernatural is the concept of a point of origin. If the universe or time is finite in any way, a point of origin must
exist for it. For matter to be brought into existence from inexistence demands that natural law be contradicted. I know that current studies into dark matter
seek to answer these questions as well, and from an empirical standpoint, I'm not writing that off as possibility. However, with these acknowledged open
questions, there is room for the concept of existence outside of natural law in a legitimate belief structure.

Well, now it's pretty much become the "reference as many community in-jokes as you can" topic. I count at least three, and I still don't
quite fully understand the Amoeba Boys thing, despite having watched an episode on YouTube.

More interesting biology.
To summarize that article, when amoeba live on a pile of crap, or whatever, and it loses its sustaining nutrients, the amoeba can come together to form a macroscopic stem with a ball on the end, and then the wind can blow the ball to a fresher food source. From an evolutionary perspective, this could illustrate how or why some single cell organisms developed into multi-celled organisms. On a side note, one of the most amazing photographs I have ever seen in my life was of an amoeba about to eat a bacteria. The amoeba looked like a terrifying, somehow sentient ocean raised up and raining down upon this little green spore. I've tried to find that picture again, but haven't been able to. There are other pictures of amoeba eating bacteria, but they're much less vivid. I would have hoped that its amazing quality would have made it easy to find: There's a famous picture of a carved microscopic bull I've seen in many independent sources, and simply Google image searching "microscopic bull" turns it up (twice on the first page of results), but the amoeba picture is much better than that. |
