Just for the record, I'm not pissed off. Sometimes I enjoy the opportunity to exercise my thought muscles. But the problem is that if a conversation either starts going in circles or if I keep having to argue against something I didn't actually say or mean (ie, strawmen) for several posts in a row, I'll just start getting bored of the conversation and either ignore it or only reply to other people's replies.

This partially explains why I only just now started replying to some of the old crap at the Game Pond. Yeah, I could've criticized Devilrays's writing when he was actually still around, but he'd only get upset and complain that everyone hates him and run away, so why bother?

And if you seriously believe all of that, then why the fuck are you starting all of these arguments? You might as well accept that when you see something you don't agree with that it's "all just taste and opinion" and shut the hell up.

"Lunar is very repetitive and boring." you make the same types of posts that you blast me for. that was your entire post. very persuasive if you ask me.

Truthfully, I do feel I was too harsh in Reply #42. Even if it was somewhat-deserved, it's a personal failing when I announce that I'm not really angry or upset, but then get agitated several posts later, especially since getting angry in topics is usually impossible to take seriously and ends up being funny instead.

But here's the question:

What is it about people that makes them so adamantly-opposed to learning, growing, maturing..."bettering" yourself a little, so to speak? It seems to go entirely against the idea of evolution (but maybe not natural selection, I suppose). I offered one possible answer to that - being "too young", because I know from personal experience (and just plain old common sense) that little kids and teenagers tend to think they know everything and can't really be told otherwise until they get a little older, have more experiences, and can see things from an older person's perspective. But is that entirely it?

Awhile ago, I was reading a blog written by someone whose work I've followed elsewhere on the internet. They were targeting webcomics for being anti-feminist, but after reading several blog entries on the subject and looking at the comics in question, I concluded that wasn't the real issue - the real issue is that they were typically-bad webcomics. So I made a post asking this: Are the writers of these webcomics people who have been writing for years and years? Or is the webcomic basically the first thing they've ever started serious work on? (Not counting school writing assignments.) Because writing is something that takes time to grow, mature, and hit its stride. This is even true of professional writing. There are tons of examples of shows whose first season is not the best (The Simpsons, for one) or bands whose first album is far from being their greatest work (who's really familiar with anything on U2's Boy?). My guess would be the latter case - that most of these webcomics are made by highschool and elementary students who don't really have the experiences and knowledge necessary to write well. Even using myself as an example, I know that I was not a good writer when I was in highschool, even though I thought I was back then and I had all kinds of awards and praise for my writing to back it up. But if I couldn't read through my old scripts and stories from that era now without saying, "Holy fuck! This is awful!", I'd be fooling myself.

Of course, every point I brought up in that post was completely and totally ignored by the posters in the blog. Instead, they decided to make ad hominem attacks and strawman arguments based entirely on the fact that I accidentally substituted the wrong word in a sentence.

You wanna know why webcomics are so bad? THAT'S why! Because apparently it's taboo to suggest that people write a little better. And hell, I'm not EVEN really suggesting that so much as I'm suggesting the writing could just naturally get better with time, maturity, and practice. But why should the webcomic authors even bother when the typical internet hiveminded reaction to the very idea is to be extremely offended?

And of course, the bloggers will continue to boo every webcomic they feel has offended them in some personal way while simultaneously not realizing that they're part of the problem.
