Except, yes, air conditioning. I made an estimate of how often we run our air conditioner, and it turns out that it is pretty much the majority of our electric bill.
We might try an experiment. A fan supposedly uses 1/35th as much electricity as an air conditioner. So, during the night, we'll try to use a fan (or even two, which would still be much less than central air) rather than air. We'll see if this helps cut the bill.
I don't know about the winter, though. You pretty much need heat to survive. And I don't think there's a good substitute for central heat. Space heaters are still in the kilowatt range. I guess this is why some people get things like corn burning stoves.
