AT&T/SBC DSL no longer supports FTP |

I just got off the phone with these assholes. They told me they only support email and normal internet now.

I googled SBC DSL and found someone saying that he had to pay 5 dollars more per month to get FTP access. Can you guys get cable internet where you are?

I thought AT&T went out of business.
Of course, for stuff like this they should if they haven't already. |

I think it's one of two things:
1. They've changed their "basic" service plan so that we're only supposed to be using it for small files. 2. They've specifically blocked me (and aren't admitting to it) because they think I'm using it to send spam. |

I think what they are doing is called "throttling" where they limit the amount of bandwidth users can effectively consume while connected. Each time
you request information the ISP checks if it's under your limit and if it is the request is denied. At least thats my non-technical, *I don't know
much about how it all works* summary.
I do know that end users can do the same thing with software. Users on Direct Connect can use specially designed clients to limit how much uploading bandwidth to allow incoming connections without affecting their downloading bandwidth and thus can more effectively leech files. Alot of hubs hate people who do this and ban them on sight.

I think they've blocked our FTP ports altogether. If it was just throttled, it should theoretically start working again sometime.

I figured it was throttling because of the way the basic package is worded. The whole "downloading small files" is a big red flag to me that they
throttle their lower end customers to give a bigger percentage of the bandwidth to customers who pay more. It all reeks of sleeze to me. If you want to stay
with AT&T I'd suggest you raise hell with their customer service. At the very least demand to see proof of why they are blocking your FTP ports. If
someone has spoofed your address and gotten you in trouble with your ISP you have a right to contest the fraudulent activity.
Time Warner can provide internet access and phone service. A quick search of their site doesn't yield much information about FTP support. I'd link what I found but it's for services in Kansas City. Doing a search from the main page only comes up with a news bit about their business class service.

The "small files" thing just refers to it being the slowest of the SBC DSL packages. That's it. Obviously, the larger the files you'd
download, the fastest the connection you'd want.

I've heard that what happens with DSL is that it's great when you first start out, but the more people in your area that sign onto the service, the
more you'll start getting kicked off. I'll stick to my good old dial-up, at least until I can afford a cable modem. Hell, I'd still be using a
text-based browser if only anything actually still worked with them.

TaroSH wrote: Pff..I wish they did. Seems more like the opposite. They're taking over phone companies left and right. And the bigger they get the worse they get. I was happy when I moved to IL and had SBC long distance. A couple years ago, guess who took over SBC... These people don't have any idea what's going on. I was supposed to get a rebate and a $25 visa gift card for signing up with their DSL service. I had to call them 4 times to get the rebate, and I still haven't gotten the card, even after close to a year. The call always goes like this: *Tell them they havn't sent my card* "OK, you need to call the rewards dept." *calls rewards* "OK, we have no record of you here. You need to call the service dept." *calls service back, tell them what happened* "Call rewards and tell them to 3-way call us" *calls rewards, asks to 3-way call* "We can't do that. They have to 3-way call us" And so on. I finally filed a claim with the BBB after a few episodes of this.

I saw that if you get an iPhone, AT&T is the only carrier you can choose, and you have to sign up for two years.

Y'know, it just occured to me I was probably thinking of Bell, or whatever that one phone company was with the blue bell for the logo.

I think Bell and SBC were just subsidiaries of AT&T to begin with. I can't remember if they became separate companies when the government breakup
occurred or and then just got bought again or went out of business or what.

Seems like that breakup was completely pointless.

Did they ever say what the problem was or did they just restore it without a word?

I was about to cancel and look into other DSL providers when I thought, "Well, what the heck, I'll try it one more time", which I did, and it
worked.

I still don't understand why so many minor things cause you to get disconnected, though.
Although I do have this weird thing where maybe once every 24 to 48 hours, seemingly completely at random, I can't get anything to load in either browser unless I restart. I can tell that the PC is still online, but can't get to any sites. Restarting always fixes it. |

I had that problem when I was still with RCN. I had to actually change some settings somewhere (I don't even know if I'd remember how and where to do
that) and reboot when that would happen. I know other people who had that service had to do the same thing.
