One thing that probably gave me away was the "Mary, merry, marry" words all sounding the same.

I read some article once about how some snotty New Yorker was speaking dismissively about someone else (it might have been Hillary Clinton, now that I think about) pronounced 'Mary' and 'merry' the same.

I can barely even imagine how those words can be pronounced differently.

Huh. I got Inland North as well. But Philadelphia and The Midland were right behind, almost a tie.

I guess not, since for the heck of it I did the quiz again and only changed that answer (to all three sounding different), and I got the same result.

I think I'm picking up on some New Jersey-isms from FO. I think she pronounces "hundred" as "hunnert".

I'd guess we'd all have our pronounciation quirks, aside from our accent. I think it's been raised before, but I think "Prowl" should have two syllables. I don' think that's a midwest thing.

My sister clearly enunciates all the syllables in "20/20", like "Twen-ty, Twen-ty". I think I more often hear "twunny twunny".

Hmm. I would pronounce hundred properly, but twenty would come out more like twunny.

Midland, with pretty high scores for Boston and Philadelphia. I live in the Midwest and my dad's from New England, so that makes sense.

Difference between Mary, marry and merry:
merry has an "eh" sound: meh-ree
marry has an "air" sound: mairee (this is the way Midwesterners say all three words)
Mary's sound is halfway between "ah" and "eh": like "maa-ree"

I have a lot of trouble distinguishing the three but to my dad the difference is totally natural.

All 3 sound different
Mary and merry sound the same but marry is different from them
All 3 sound the same

None of those holds true for me.

To me, Mary and Marry sound the same, and Merry is different.

Anyway, people in the midwest seem to drag out or emphasize "a" sounds.

Like, when I say class, I say it as one syllable with a soft a.

Midwesterners seem to say it like, "clay-ass"

Another example would be laugh. I say it like "laff," as one syllable. Midwesterners say "lay-aff."

Huh, I say "laugh" with one syllable. I don't think I've heard anyone say it with two.

I lot of people around here say probably like "probly", completely cutting out the middle syllable.

Brain Age has an activity where you count the syllables in some famous quotes. One of the quotes had the word "duel" which I counted as one syllable ("dool"), but the program counts it as two ("doo-el").

You have a good voice for TV and radio.

I think I'm a case that can easily confuse a system like this. You see, I'm FROM Texas, but I've spent the greater deal of my life in Washington DC, so I guess my accent doesn't know what to sound like.

Mine also came up Philadelphia, and while I am from around there, I think that's a little misleading. Some Philadelphians have accents that sound almost like southerners and pronounce "wash" as "warsh", and I'm nothing like that.

To be honest, I know someone IRL who's from Philly and talks like that, but I used to always think he was faking trying to sound like a southerner until I saw someone on the internet one time mention the Philly "warsh" thing.

I'm from The West, both in reality and according to the quiz. I am the lowest common denominator and no one thinks I have an accent, which is what I've heard so it must be true.

Kew- pon, or Kyu-pon (Qu-pon)?

Kran? or Cray - yon?

I've heard all those variations just in this very limited part of the country.

Quite coincidentally today I heard a co-worker yell, "It's not WARSH! There's no R in WASH!!"

I told him that's a Philadelphia thing. He said there are Ohioans who do it, too. I don't know if I've actually noticed anyone say it that way around here, though.
