Played Castlevania Rebirth, the third in Konami's Rebirth WiiWare games (I haven't played either Contra Rebirth or Gradius
Rebirth), and made it to Level 5 which looked to be the final one. Can't say I was too impressed. The level design was unimpressive, there wasn't
much in the way of new enemies or interesting bosses, and it just wasn't that difficult; it just felt sterile. I did get about three game overs on Stage 4
(rather ashamedly) because of a room with a plethora of those fire breathing dragon heads, which caused a few cheap deaths the first times via my clumsiness,
followed up by a boss that's hard to attack without the axe, but should you die you've no chance of reclaiming an axe unless you get a game over and
start the level afresh, though it ain't so hard without it. I rather stupidly quit on Stage 5 thinking I could just go back and finish it off another time,
but it doesn't look like it keeps track of progress. Rather understandably given the attempt at being retro, but maaaan, I'm not in the mood to plod
through those four boring levels again. =(

I looked at some screen shots for that game. Is it just me, or does it not even look good?
Like for the whipping pose
it doesn't even look so much like he's even pulling back to whip as it does that he's merely raising his hand in the air.
Whereas to me it looks like in Castlevania III that he's putting his body into it and following through. |

Uh... I think you need to learn about the great gaming choices the Wii has to offer. You won't be so eager to poke fun once you've played Ninjabread Man, Monster Trux Arenas, M&M's Kart
Racing, and George of the Jungle and the Search for the Secret.

I finished Mario 3. Every stage... except for that World 8 fortress. I never usually have any real trouble figuring out how to reach the exit, but this time I
just couldn't remember. I got tired of going through it so I skipped past it. I ended the game with about 60 lives.

Crawl and 1OOO wrote:Yeah, the graphical design is really hit and miss; whatever Belmont it is this time is probably the worst protagonist sprite I've seen in the series, and the way the game is just presented (the graphical style, the effects, even the sounds!) seems to evoke the vibe of a Flash game more than anything. If it were a Flash game it'd probably be passable, but with Konami themselves at the helm it's pretty dire. The few times it uses multiple sprites to form a large enemy it just looks remarkably half-assed. On the bright side, there's a big red knight that's smoothly animated and is probably the nicest sprite in the game (that means a lot!). The areas you go to are practically just retreads of stuff from Bloodlines and Super Castlevania IV, except they did it better. Considering how the other two Rebirth games just reuse graphics from the old instalments, I don't see why this didn't just pinch everything from a 16-bit game as well. As always with my nags, if the game were just an engine for a level builder then I'd be much more supportive; I mean, it recycles a whole bunch of enemies, revisits a whole bunch of area clichés in each level and still uses the remarkably basic tile-based level designs that have been around since the dawn of the series - what's stopping them? (well, besides the fact that that'd be awesome and nobody makes awesome things anymore) |

I watched a video of it. The music was from Bloodlines, but it sounded extremely tinny and awful. I think the only explanation (unless it was a problem with
the video) is that they did it that way on purpose, to make it more "8-bit" or something, without understanding that that's not really what old
game soundtracks sounded like.
Well, maybe they actually do have trouble reproducing old sounds on new computers. One complaint that I frequently see for game remakes (eg., Zanac X Zanac) is that they have "muffled" sound. That might be because in the old days they had wave synthesizers directly outputting the sound, and now I'm not sure exactly what they do (sometimes it might be playing back a recording), but they probably cut off the sharp peaks in the waveforms. |

I played it again and made my way to Death this time before I got a Game Over and had to retry the level from the start. If the boss is the only decent part of
the level, screw that. I'd like to finish it just so I can be satisfied that I'll never have any reason to play it again, but even as it is, killing
nearly an hour to get back there doesn't sound too inviting. And I think the music has given me a headache.

I read Equal Rites, the third Discworld novel. The parts with Granny Weatherwax were alright, but any time the focus changed to Esk my eyes would glaze over.
And taking to heed my vow to not play any game past the PS1/N64/Saturn era, I restarted EVO last night. The last time I played it I had just finished the fish era, so I just restarted. I'm to the dinosaur era, chose to become a pterodactyl, and now have to EP grind all over again. |

Finished Castlevania Rebirth on Easy which I can't say I'm proud of (it's depressingly easy without the slightest ounce of challenge at
all), but at least I know what Dracula's second form looks like. I assume on Normal mode his second form is a little tougher, but if it
doesn't gain any more attacks I'd probably say it's one of the lamest Draculas ever.
Also got about two hours worth of gameplay into Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin a couple of days ago, though I didn't really achieve too much with it; defeated a couple of bosses (weird gel-in-a-jar and half of a giant bull thing), found two new areas (desert and circus) and got exploring the latter for a bit. |

After Mega Man 9, I think a lot of people (myself included) were hoping for more games in that same psuedo-retro vein. After Bionic Commando: Rearmed and now
the Rebirth series apparently sucking, I guess there's not much to hope for anymore.

I beat EVO.
The final boss was mostly a puss. I say "mostly" because of that fucking cheapass eel and cockroach I only beat by EP grinding on T-Rexes for half an hour while listening to Asia and evolving when my HP got low, but the other spawns were easy, and two of them didn't even do anything (one just runs off screen, the other is a health refill) |

I need help with Shinobi for PS2
Here I thought that I would breeze through it in time to meet the next game debut deadline .......but unless some sort of encroachment takes place, there is little hope that I'll solve the game without sore thumbs. I have problems with the game- like how I can't block, or how the targeting system focuses in on one enemy while the main character strolls around like some sort of bad-ass, or how the enemies remain divided up enough that I have to smash the shit out of the dash button (I even reconfigurated the controller thinking it might help) to strike a pose, or how there is no literal way to land a shuriken toss while scaling for attack openings in the enemies' territory, or why the lead character hasn't gotten any new powers since I started the game last night, or the capacity of having to take down a hellicopter....twice....with a yin-absorbing, masochistic, 25" long piece of benevolent steel. I can't figure out a way to improve the gameplay. |

I've read (or at least tried to read) that three times and I still don't know what the hell you're talking about, but I get the feeling you
haven't figured out the Tate system...

Yeah - I bought the game used so it didn't include the manual.
I'm stuck on stage 3-A ...earlier this week, I put COD 6 on pre-order. From what people have told me, COD has weird "perks" - in that the more time that one spends completeing missions and improving rank, more stat improvements and weapon upgrades become unlockable.... I'll see if I can find anything more about the Tate system. |
|||
Crawl and 1OOO |

The idea of the TATE system is that every enemy you kill (within a certain time) makes you stronger. So if you start by killing the weaker enemies in an area,
then you can become strong enough to kill the strongest enemies in maybe only one hit.
I didn't find the TATE system strictly necessary until about stage 5, though it can help earlier. Well, except for the first stage. You gain the ability to TATE in 2-1. |

still on stage 3 in Shinobi
made some progress last night.....figuring out that when the analog is used in conjunction with the targeting button, a whole new set of attacks become available by holding certain directions with the left analog and pressing the attack button. found that there is a charged attack while holding on to the target button....and a kick maneuver is executed while holding the analog away from the intended object and attacking. Now to apply that while obeying the TATE I wasn't relying on the targeting system at all beforehand. -got into the lair of the spider-tiger, lost once, sat down the controller, and changed the channel.
