At first I was letting the kids pick their own candy out of our bowl, but they seemed confused (and sometimes needed both hands to hold open their bag) so I started giving out random candy.
The funniest trick or treater was a little kid dressed up like Venom. I gave him a couple of things, maybe a Crunch and a Hersey's or something, and he whined, "I want THAT one!" and stumbled into our house (I was on a chair just inside the door) and grabbed an M and M pouch out of the bowl.
Man, costumes are much better now than when I was a kid. Like the Venom costume looked like Venom. When I was a kid, a Venom costume would be a white bag that you'd wear on your chest like a shirt, and everyone would know you're supposed to be Venom because it'd have a picture of his face and would say "Venom" on it. Like this stuff.
