I don't think Rowling handled some of the things in the last book as well as she could have. Like Crawl said, the semantics with the Elder's Wand that eventually acted as the Deus Ex Machina in the final confrontation came out of nowhere. There were other things that just showed up without any mention in the last six books, like the Resurrection Stone, and the Fiendfyre spell that ultimately destroyed one of the horcruxes (which you'd think might be important.) The events of the last book were much better when they felt like a fruition of a long-running thread that had existed throughout several books. Like, when Neville pulls the sword out of the Sorting Hat, there was a lot of build-up towards that.

And is it just me, or did the entire sub-plot of the Ravenclaw Diadem seem tacked-on, like it was the very last thing she had come up with, and she just put whatever came to her mind down, because she needed a sixth horcrux? It's so weakly tied to the rest of the series, and even to the last book. Like, there's that whole back-story concerning the Bloody Baron and the seldom-mentioned Ravenclaw house ghost that was so cliched and could have been made up on the spot. Then, there's how it's destroyed: the Fiendfyre spell, which comes out of nowhere, never before mentioned, and cast by... a tertiary character?

Look at how all the other horcruxes were destroyed, and by whom:

Diary-destroyed by Harry, with a basilisk fang (which was tied to the second book's central plot)

Ring-destroyed by Dumbledore, with the Sword (the ring curses Dumbledore, which weakens him and contributes partially to his death)

Locket-destroyed by Ron, with the Sword (the means through which they find the Sword in the forest is the pay-off for Snape's character arc, and the scene in which the locket is destroyed shows character development in Ron)

Cup-destroyed by Hermione (ok, I don't remember this one too well and it was also sort of tacked on, but at least the scene at Gringotts was a bit more exciting and a main character destroyed the horcrux. The Cup had also been mentioned before in the previous book, so it didn't just come out of nowhere.)

Nagini-killed by Neville, with the Sword (Nagini first appeared in the fourth book, and the scene where she's killed is a great conclusion to Neville's character arc and my favorite scene in the book, possibly the whole series.)

... and then there's the Diadem- Destroyed by one of Draco's little-seen and inconsequential lackeys, with a spell that had never been mentioned before its use to destroy the horcrux.

Do you see the problem? All the other horcruxes were destroyed by important characters, and their destruction had bigger significance to the overall plot. They were all built up to in some way. But the Diadem is just another magical McGuffin to destroy in order to beat the Big Bad, crammed into the eleventh hour of the last book.

Why couldn't she have handled it so that another main character destroyed it, and made it have a greater pay-off in some way? How about Luna, Hagrid, or even Draco, characters whose parts in the last book turned out to be minimal or lame, anyways?
