Mel, on the other hand, takes great lengths for the title of "cutest cat we own". She just loves to lie on her back on the office chair, all sprawled
out and fluffy, with her little arms curled up. I've posted pictures of her doing that, but somehow when you see it in person, she looks almost too cute to
be real.

And Mel and Pepper are spending more time together in the big tower.
Hermes... Man! It was about 3 AM last night. WHOOOSHH!! Hermes had jumped into the middle of the bed between us and ran across it to Pepper's staircase, where he slept for most of the night. I had a vague impression of a kitty but it happened so fast I only knew what happened by piecing together the evidence afterwards. |

Caramel was really nuzzling up to me, so I got ready to give her some dairy temptations. When I grabbed the bag, Pepper heard the sound and perked right up.
She even tried to take first dibs (I ended up having to fill up the bowls first, then put them down for the babies). So, they were eating, but Hermes was
upstairs...
Nope, he came down to eat, too. The cute thing was that when they were all done eating their treats, each of them went to the others' food bowls to see if anyone left any leftovers they could eat. |

He does that a lot. He leaps from the top of the futon to the bed. But usually he runs down the bed on my left side, along the edge, not between us. I stopped by the shelter and told them how well Lady was doing. The Maine Coon with the eye problems was running free, and man she is a sight to see when she runs! It's like a giant furry caterpillar moving at lightning speed. She apparently loves to run, but she's got the same shyness issue Baby has - she's friendly when she's in the cage and relishes attention if you give it to her, but you let her out of the cage and she becomes a fraidy cat. I could barely get close to her, and she'd run off again. Actually, though, Baby's improved nearly 100%. She no longer hisses at me or swats me with her paw. She likes to come out of the cage on her own, although I think the main reason is because she found a place she likes to hide even more - underneath one of the desks. But she now lets me pet her all I want. Lady's change in temperament has led me to believe Baby would probably perk up a lot, too, if she was taken home (though I'm not ready to adopt another cat yet). Bailey was hiding underneath a desk almost the whole time I was there. When Baby ran past her, Bailey not only hissed, but made a snarl/snorting sound like a warthog or dragon. |

I still haven't been able to pet Hermes as much as I want, but, as long as Mel isn't in a mood, I can pet her indefinitely. It's just that she
seems to most often be in the mood for endless petting when I'm sitting on the john.

I think being at the shelter must feel like a neverending vet visit for cats. I felt somewhat-guilty adopting Lady because I thought she was happy at the
shelter, and it seemed like some of the people there may have been attached to her. But after seeing how much happier she is at the house, I don't feel
guilty about it anymore.
When she makes biscuits, she doesn't just flex her paws like Pepper does, she makes full bicycle motions with her front arms. She was even making biscuits on the hard basement floor. I think the only one of our cats who didn't act happy about its first day with us was Pepper. But she had an injury and didn't seem like she was feeling well, and she probably was longing for her original owners. Oh yeah, the person who was working at the shelter when I adopted Lady was new and didn't quite know how to handle the adoption process yet. Because she wasn't aware and I didn't think about it, she gave me a bag of regular Science Diet instead of the kind formulated for inactive cats, which is what Lady should have gotten. But since Lady's a lot more active at the house now, I'm not going to sweat it. |

FO was lying down and Pepper was lying on her chest. I went to lie down beside her. After a little while, Pepper seemed antsy. FO thought Pepper was about
to leave, but instead she got up, got between us, and then laid down again! She wanted to be between both of us! Then she started to clean herself, which I
think cats especially do when they're content.
So, I think that's more evidence that what FO said is true, that Pepper has grown to accept us as her parents. |

I took the cats' toybox to the new house because they haven't used it much here and I thought Lady might need something to play with while she's
there alone. Yesterday, I noticed that the tail of a fluffy mouse toy had been pulled up out of one of the toybox holes and I guessed that Lady was probably
trying to get it out, but couldn't. So I took it out, and sure enough, she played with it for a little bit, batting it around, tossing it into the air, and
chasing after it.
Pepper also played with her chirping bird toy for a little while last night. She seriously looked like she wanted to eat it. It's just so amazing to me that cats, especially ones like Pepper, can be such sweet lovable creatures, starving for human affection, and yet they're still carnivores that want to kill things. Oh, man, I was wrong about Hermes not spraying. We took one of the cat towers (a small one from the small bedroom) to the new house and Crawl pointed out that something brown was stained on the front of it on one side. The only thing I can think that could possibly be is Hermes urine. I hope that's the only thing he's been spraying. If we get a new couch and he does that to it, he's gonna get disciplined. |

Lady also did something hilarious yesterday. Right before we were about to leave to get lunch, I wanted to say goodbye to her, but I couldn't find her
anywhere. She seemingly vanished into thin air. I checked all over the upstairs, the downstairs, and the basement and she was nowhere to be seen. The only
thing I could think is that she must have slipped out the back door when Crawl's brother opened it, although he swore she didn't go past him.
I started a second run through the house and Crawl picked a sleeping bag up off the floor, and there she was underneath of it. He said that he saw it moving before he picked it up. She may be 9 years old, but she's still a calico. |

Aw, shit, I had my first scare with Lady.
I opened the front door and she tried to get out. I put my leg by the door to force her back, which works with, say, Mel. But Lady just jumped over my foot and was out the door! But then when she got on the porch, she hunkered down, and I just bent over, picked her up, and put her back in. Shit, though! The good thing here is if they get out, we might have a second line of protection in the fence. There, after they're out the front door, there's nothing to stop them. |

Oh, but before that happened, I was petting her, and she purred. She's loud, but not like Caramel's motorboat. Lady is like a lion.

FO said that Lady got out TWICE on her last night. Maybe it is a good thing to use the back door. At least then, they'd have to run around the house to
get anywhere and we might be lucky enough that they'd get trapped in the back yard.
But we also might have to adjust things like how we block the door, etc. |

She does like to come out the door, but not to run away. She just wants to be with us. She responds to her name. If you yell "Lady!", she hunkers
down low to the ground and stops moving. I also got her up into the bedroom tonight just by saying, "Come on, Lady!"
Hopefully, the gas company won't screw up this time and I won't have to lock her up again a third night. The first night I did that to her was one of the hottest nights of the year so far and I felt really sickly worried about her all day. But thankfully, the trees outside the house provide a lot of shade so that room may not have been as hot as it could have been, and she seemed fine when I finally got there to let her out. She didn't even leave the room right away. She was mostly happy about me being there and rolled at my feet until I left the room, at which point she followed me. Tonight's just the opposite - it's supposed to be unseasonably cold tonight. Probably not cold enough for it to be a worry for a slightly-fat longhair cat, but I did put the sleeping bag that she was sitting on in that picture in the room with her, so she can snuggle up in that if she gets cold. She also has her litter box (freshly-cleaned and I added more litter to it), two water bowls, a filled food bowl, two of her toys (a ball and a catnip banana) and I hung the scratching board on the doorknob. She's like Mel in the sense that she doesn't like people food. I tried sharing some turkey from my lunch sandwich with her, but she never ate it, and I had to throw it away. But, boy, does she go crazy for her cat treats! She also likes to play with her toys. I can tell because they've usually been moved around from where they were on my last visit. She constantly kneads. Constantly. If she sits up, she stamps the floor with her little paws. If she lies over on her side, she makes bicycle motions with her arms. That and the purring are things I never saw her do at the shelter. I certainly hope she gets along with all the others because I don't think there's any way I could give her up now. |

This is the Maine Coon from the shelter. They finally put a picture of her up on their site. Unfortunately, it does not show her huge tail. I'm not sure what her name is now. I thought the tag at the shelter said Rose, but the site says Jasmine, and the description of her on the site seems to be mistakenly copied from another cat. |

Ah... according to the website, Bailey was adopted. I know Crawl really wanted that cat, and although I didn't think she'd be the best fit for our
family, I'm going to miss her. Baby's still there, though.
But it's just not a good idea for us to take on a fifth one while I'm still only part-time employed. |

Yeah. Bailey's gone. I dropped in briefly to see if that was a mistake (occasionally, they've marked cats as "adopted" on the website even
when they weren't), and another cat is in her cage. Baby is still there, though, and I pet her for a little while. She's so much nicer than she was
when I first started working with her, but I still need to get full-time employment.
Pepper tried to get out the door when I left, so I picked her up and sat her on the castle by the windows. When I came home, she was still there sleeping. She left it to use the litter box, but returned to it when she was done. Nobody seems to be using the Yesterday's News litter, but I have a cockamamie idea for it - I used it to line the bottom of the litterbox and put the more normal gravel kind on top of it. I'll see how that goes for awhile. |

I took the cat tunnel to the house since it's such a mess here right now, it's difficult for the Original Trio to play with it, and Lady loves it! She
was pushing it around, running through it, rubbing her face on it, chewing on the balls that are attached to the inside of it.
I wonder if her former 90-year-old owners ever bought her anything like that to play with. She was also playing with the cubes while I was gone, as was evidenced by several Lady-Doofs I found inside of them. |

Mel and Pepper seem to have almost completely stopped fighting. There was one incident where Mel jumped on Pepper and rolled her over, but I don't know
whether it was an accident or a moment of overexcitement. Either way, Pepper didn't seem to get angry about it and I haven't noticed her growling or
spitting at Mel at all. Sometimes, they both get on the living room lookout together.
I'm not sure what caused the change, but I have two possible theories: 1. Mel, having been the first cat to move in, may have viewed the old apartment as "hers" and was harassing Pepper to show her dominance. But since they were both introduced to the new house together, they may view ownership on equal terms. The house is also larger so there may not be as much concern over territorial boundaries. 2. Mel may have been bored at the apartment because there wasn't enough for her to do. We had a lot of toys and cat furniture, but not a lot of running space and Pepper would almost always be in the way. Mel always had a penchant for overeating but I don't think it got really bad until I shut all the window shades down at the old apartment. Since she's been at the new house where she has lots of windows to look out, I haven't noticed her overeating. She was probably just eating a lot because she was bored. Lady still hasn't completely adapted to having other cats around, but she's getting better. She comes out of the kitchen to visit with us for a few moments throughout the day. It seems she's more bothered by Pepper than anyone else, even though Pepper is the most harmless and docile. I think Pepper's fearlessness freaks out other cats. We suspected that was part of why Mel had a hard time accepting her at first, too. Lady also likes to play "hide-and-seek" in the basement. Yesterday, she ran down the basement stairs and I followed her, but couldn't find her once I got down there. I figured she must have gotten into the back room, but the door hadn't been pushed open. Then, out of the darkness, I just barely saw the white part of her face and two glowing eyes peeking at me from behind these wooden table/bench things that Crawl had propped up against the back wall. When I went back up the stairs, she charged after me. She went back downstairs and I followed her and saw her run behind the tables. Within moments she peeked out at me. I went up the stairs again, and she charged after me again. Mel used to like doing that in the play cubes. |

We are having some trouble. Hermes attacked Lady a couple of times. It might just be a game to Hermes, but it's traumatizing to Lady. She screams like a mountain lion when it happens. It happened this morning, around 5 AM, when I was having insomnia anyway. Lady had ran into the basement and was hiding under a chair we have down there. I tried to look at her face to see if she was injured there but she didn't want me near. She hissed. I picked her up, and she clawed at me with her back claws (she still has those) and tried to bite at me. She looked like she was okay that time (there was hair on the stairs; he might have gotten her back), but he did get her nose a couple of days ago. I think I'm gonna have to spring for that thing that files down the edge on a cat's claws and do that to Hermes. There's also a chance we'll have to lock him in a room at night (and when we're at work?) (even if he doesn't HURT Lady, he shouldn't be scaring her like that anyway) Another reason he might be doing that is because we're disciplining him more for doing that to Caramel, AND Caramel can fight back (and often scares the crap out of him even when she doesn't back it up), so he might be taking some aggression out on Lady. But it's not acceptable. If he wants to play, he can rampage or play with toys.
On the plus side, Pepper has been extra adorable lately. She's been playing more than every before. She was playing with Caramel's favorite toys, the little pink balls. She bats them around and chases after them. When she runs, she still runs kind of like a rabbit. Once she was doing that, and when her play brought her close to the tunnel, she jumped back and forth through that, too. She still gets tired quickly, but instead of playing for 30 seconds and conking out, this morning she played for several minutes. After after conking out for a little while, she did it again.
