Only one part of the roof is leaky, and we're getting that fixed. The rest of the roof is all new.

I hope it works out good for you and the cats.
I see myself renting for the forseeable future. I'd have to both move away from the shore and pay off loads of debt before buying would be an option. |

I think the cats are going to love it there. They'll have so much more room to roam around. And Lady took to the house like a fish to water. It's
unbelievable how much different she is there than she was at the shelter. I was expecting she'd be this cat that doesn't mind attention, but would
mostly want to loaf by herself all day. Instead, I got a cat that wants constant attention, follows me everywhere, plops herself down in front of my feet and
rolls. As I was carrying stuff from my car through the back door, she got the bright idea to go down to the basement, lie on the floor and look up at me and
watch.
It's like she's vying for title of "most affectionate cat we own", and I had no idea she was like that, especially after the shelter told me she had a bad attitude and would scream like a mountain lion. I guess cats just really, really hate the shelter and their personalities are dependent on how much they like their environment. I think I do have "large house paranoia", though. If the cat is out of my sight for awhile, I might start to worry that it got stuck somewhere or somehow got out, and I'll go looking for her. I still do that sometimes even here. If I come home from work and one of the cats is not in sight, I go looking for it. Usually, Mel is at the door, Pepper is on the big cardboard box (although lately she's also been in the big tower), and Hermes is on the bed. If Hermes is out of sight, I don't worry as much because he spends almost the whole day upstairs so that's usually where he is if he's not on the bed. If Mel or Pepper are missing, however, I get a little more concerned. There was a dog in one of the yards somewhere behind us that barked the whole time I was there tonight. I heard its owners tell it to shut up several times, but it wouldn't. It must've known I was there, and because it doesn't know me, it was barking about it. Some of the houses here have really neat enclosed porches. When we have enough money, I'm definitely getting that done. The pillars out front need to be redone eventually anyway. I LOVE the refrigerator at the new place! It's SO much bigger than the one we have now (which broke anyway). I'll never have to worry about storage space again. It has a double-rack freezer and lots of storage compartments in the door. I guess the only problem is that it might obsolete the need for our awesome new mini-fridge, but it probably would just be a waste of electricity to run both if we don't need both. I also like the outdoor storage shed. We might build a garage someday, and if we did that, we'd probably have to tear down the shed to make room, but it'll be a nice storage shed until that day comes. Crawl said we'd have to buy a snow shovel, but there are two in there that the old owners left behind. |

Thanks!
There's a Kroger just about a block from the house. I'm going to shop there today to get some needed groceries and also to start filling the refrigerator so that it will consume less energy. We can't cook over there just yet (the gas company won't be over until the 1st of July to start everything up again), but I can take stuff back to the apartment as needed since I always stop there after work. If only you could walk a straight line and didn't have to work your way around properties, the house would actually be within reasonable walking distance of where I work now. |

The only tricky thing about the house is the drive way situation. Our driveway is basically connected to the neighbor's driveway. I don't think
it's considered a "shared" driveway, because we each own our half, and each half is wide enough to fit our cars. And they're long enough to
fit, I dunno, maybe 5 cars, if we had to.
But it's still kind of annoying to have such a narrow space to back out of, being careful to avoid hitting our house, or the neighbor's car. And how will we deal with going to work in the morning? Whoever leaves first should be closer to the street, but we might have to do some car shuffling. So, another idea further down the line is to pave part of the back yard for parking. Here's the situation as it currently exists:
The driveway (grey) is on the side of the property, next to the house (blue). At the end is a shed. And there are front and back yards (green) FO was thinking of paving over the entire back yard, which seems like overkill. And isn't it nice to have some grass? And she was the one who was thinking of having a bird feeder back there. I was thinking of paving a spot like this.
There are two considerations: How wide it is, and where we put it along the driveway. It'd have to be wide enough for two cars. I'm picturing us coming home from work like this, just pulling into that space and parking side by side.
Then, when we leave to go to work in the morning, we'd back out, and drive down the drive way, straight ahead, not backing up. To do that, the car that parks closest to the BACK of the yard would have to have enough room to back out. (the other car should then definitely have enough room)
I guess I'd have to come up with measurements for this to be possible, then check that against the size of our yard. |

The previous owners left an old, kind of rusty manual lawnmower in the shed. For the heck of it, I tried using it yesterday.
It sort of worked. When I ran it over the grass, a bunch of mulch started shooting up. HOWEVER, the problem now is that there are higher stalks. And the mower didn't get them at all. There's a bar ahead of the trimmer, and when the bar hit the stalks, it just pushed them down. And the cutter missed them completely. Then in a couple of minutes, the stalks just pop up again. So, it might be necessary to use an actual, gas powered mower some times. But maybe the manual one could be used for routine maintenance. |

We dropped off more stuff at the house. Wow. We haven't done the big move yet, but it is filling up.
Lady discovered that she likes resting on the sleeping bags. Well, she already was hiding under them the other day.
FO probably thinks its nice to have at least one cat there to keep us company when we visit.
Boy, FO accumulated a lot of stuffed animals. It's like the unicorn scene in Dodgeball.
FO set up a tower in the sun room, plus a staircase so Lady (who doesn't seem to be able to jump very high) can reach it. I also put an aquarium thermometer in the window so I can tell the temperature outside (within a narrow range). It was a little cooler today. About 72F. Usually, lately, it's been closer to 86.
I was putting some of my guitar building stuff in the basement. Also, randomly, is an old TV cart and our clothes drying rack. But I also have the two tables I used for routing, my router, some templates, lots of scrap wood, my quick grips, etc., etc. Some day it'd be nice to have a real little work shop there. The guitar in progress, however, is upstairs; I don't know if it'd be a good idea to keep it in the basement.
Right now, one of the bedrooms upstairs is mostly being used for storage, mostly for videogame stuff. The potential "bachelor pad" part of the basement is less than half of the basement. Then there's the laundry room and also a decent amount of storage space. So, I think we should have plenty of storage space. Not even counting the attic. |

Our upstairs is almost completely empty now, mostly other than the biggest stuff (a futon, shelves, my poof chair). FO thought that getting rid of the cubes
might encourage Hermes to stop rampaging so much, but I'm not sure it had that effect. Now he has even more room to run around and rampage. If FO's
theory is correct and he also rampages when he's upset as well as as play, maybe just the change in the upstairs (cats are supposed to like stability)
could have him confused.
It'd be great if this was our easiest move ever. The previous time was so stressful: So many of our belongings were destroyed, we had to get it done in a week, we had to work in flooded, dark rooms. Now, for a lot of the stuff, we've been able to take our time. And since we shouldn't have to rent the UHall truck for as long, it should be less expensive, too. We did our first load of laundry in the new washer yesterday. There was not nearly enough room for the clothes on our drying rack. FO suggested going to a store and getting another one. I was kind of gung ho about the first one, but after I learned how much it cost I wasn't sure I wanted to spring for a second. AND I wasn't sure that even two would hold one washing machine worth of clothes. We had some left over UHall rope from our last move, so we set up a make-shift laundry line in the basement. I guess it's OK for now. Clothing really doesn't dry all that fast this way. FO thought that getting rid of the cubes might encourage Hermes to stop rampaging so much, but I'm not sure it had that effect.I don't want him to rampage less, that wasn't why I took the cubes away. It's because Mel and Hermes keep getting into fights over the cubes. One will get inside the cubes and the other will charge, and when they meet, they fight. I was going to leave the cubes until we move the cats themselves over there, but since they can't play nicely, I took them earlier. It's probably just as well since they took up almost the entire back seat. I wouldn't have been able to take them in the same trip with the cats in the carriers. |

And she was the one who was thinking of having a bird feeder back there.I just realized that this is not a good idea for several reasons. 1. It might be too easy to accidentally back the car into it. 2. It will cause a lot of birds to shit on our cars. Maybe if I really want a birdfeeder someday, I can put one out front somewhere. I don't think the cats will be too deprived of bird entertainment. There's always a bunch out there. I should clean the awnings out at the end of the year so the sparrows can nest there again next year. |

Sounds like Crawl's sister might help me move some stuff tomorrow with her truck. I was contemplating taking Hermes over there early. I'd like to get
his litterbox out of the upstairs bedroom and run the roomba in that room as soon as possible.
At least one cat will have to make a separate trip because I still only have two carriers. Hermes won't fit in the smaller carrier, and I doubt it will be easy getting Mel into it now, so one of the larger cats has to go alone. I guess I'm just trying to figure out what would be best for them. Hermes likes to sleep close to us at night, so the only issue I'd have with taking him early is that if someone doesn't stay there overnight with him, he might get upset. (If he doesn't get along with Lady at first, I can always lock her up in the master bedroom when I'm not there. She doesn't seem to particularly mind it.) But if we move some of the larger stuff out of the house tomorrow, I might want to temporarily lock the cats up. I'd prefer to lock them up in separate rooms, and I only have two bedrooms here... |

So far, Crawl's sister has been a no-show, so I'm going to take the second load of the day over by myself. Damn. Even with a full day off of work, I
don't think I'll be able to take more than one extra trip than I usually do, since it takes so long to load, drive over, unload, and drive back. No
wonder we were so stressed out the time we had to move from the last apartment.
