Top Ten Video Game Gods

(Some of these "gods" may or may not be real gods, but all of them were considered gods in the game at one point or another.)

10) Palutena (Kid Icarus series)

The benevolent Goddess of Light and ruler of Angel Land. I ranked her pretty low because despite being a goddess, she's pretty much a damsel in distress. She was able to give Pit some help, though, in the form of the Sacred Bow. I like how she's part of Pit's Final Smash in Brawl as well.


9) Volcanon and Mitula (Shining Force II)

The god of the sky (or volcanoes, I forget which) and goddess of the earth in Shining Force II. Volcanon seems to be a jerk at first who blames the many races of Rune for letting Zeon free and refushes to help them. Mitula would like to help to help Bowie's group, but can't because of Volcanon's refusal to help them. Both, however, turned out to have been helping th heroes as best as they could, making Zeon and the other Devils think they weren't. They have something in the way of personalities, though not much.

8.) The Warring Triad (Final Fantasy VI)

The three gods whose war created the Espers and power nearly lead to its destruction twice. I mostly rank them for what their power and actions have done to the world of Final Fantasy VI. While the gods tried to seal their power away, the Espers were still discovered and captured to be used for their power. Later the Warring Triad Statues are found, leading to Kefka becoming something of a god himself and the misalignment of the statues causing the world to be nearly destroyed.

7) Ashera (Fire Emblem Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn)

Ashera is first seen as the benevolent creator-goddess, worshipped by both Beorc and Laguz. She did have some strict laws, such as forbidding the union of Beorc and Laguz and cursing any children born to them as well as the Laguz parent. She is never seen in Path of Radiance, but in Radiant Dawn...


6) Malpercio (Baten Kaitos series)

An evil god who waged war against humans 1000 years ago. So destructive was the war that his blood tainted the land and would have tainted the ocean, thus leading it to being sealed in the Wazn royal bloodline to be unleashed when the land became purified. Malpericio's body was broken up into five smaller part which themselves were nameless gods and sealed into cards called the End Magnus. The divine power in these cards is so great that they are used to make the five continents rise up into the air, away from the tainted earth and air. When Malpercio is resurrected later in Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean he is more dead than alive, being unable to talk, apparently lacking a soul (or much of one anyway) and single-mindedly focused on revenge. After Malpercio is finally defeated once and for, Xelha apologizes to the god and Kalas states that his thousand years of suffering is at an end. While unclear in the first game, Baten Kaitos Origins sheds more light on this. Malpercio is not exaclty a god but is actually made up of five siblings who somehow became Malpercio for some greator good. I'm not too clear on the how and why since I'm only not starting to the play BKO, but it's pretty complicated from what I heard.

Yeah, this pretty much gets a spoiler tag from here on out since this game is still fairly new:


4) Profound Darkness/Dark Falz (Phantasy Star series)

Calling either of these beings gods is a bit ambiguous, but Zeo in Phantasy Star IV did call either Dark Falz or the Profound Darkness "my god" and Dark Falz is referred to as the God of Destruction in Phanasy Star Onlilne: Episode I. The Profound Darkness is an extremely powerful spiritual life form that came to be when a single poweful entity spilt into two beings, the Profound Darkness and the Great Light. After the two battled, the Great Light managed to seal the PD into a pocket universe, creating the Algol solar system to act as locks on the seal. Over time the seal weakened, as seals on evil things tend to do, so that every thousand years, the seal became so weak that the PD was able to allow a small part of itself through; these are creatures called Dark Falzes or Forces. I rank these two being up high because even though they are single-minded embodiments of destruction, their existence drives the entire universe of Phantasy Star as well as the games themselves. If not for the PD, there wouldn't BE an Algol Solar system. Thanks to these beings the planet Palma was destroyed and the worlds of Motavia and Dezoris are not that adequet at perserving human life. Even before then, the earth humans believe to have been influenced by a Dark Falz turned to people of Palma into helpless childern entirely reliant on a super computer who eventually betrayed them and led to the destruction of their civilization in addition to their home planet. If PSO is canonically connected to the earlier Phantasy Stars, this god is apparently very hard to eliminate since one of its parts, a Dark Falz was able to survive the PD's death and probably intended on becoming the new Profound Darkness, killing thousands of people in the process.


3) Martel (Tales of Phantasia, Symphonia, and Symphonia: Dawn of the New World)

The creator goddess who allegedly went to sleep in heaven because the hero Mithos, whom she loved dearly, sacrificed himself to become the new giant Kharlan Tree that produces mana. She is to be awakened by a Chosen who must unlock four seals to become an angel, thus restoring mana to the world. This, or course is a load of BS. The goddess Martel never really existed; she was actually the older sister of the Half-Elf boy Mithos whose death caused Mithos to go mad and become obessessed with bringing her back to life. At the end of Tales of Symphonia, Martel, in a sense almost become a real goddess as her sould is merged with the seed of the giant Kharlan Tree along with countless other souls to become the summon Spirit of the Tree. She is the tree's spirit as is a sort of spirit of mana. Her power is weak in Symphonia and Dawn of the New World as she is quite young along with her tree, but she will likely become extremely powerful if Ratataosk, the summon spirit of the old Kharlan Tree is any indication. Ratatoask has nearly god-like powers himself though his tree died long ago. I rank her pretty high up not only because of her complex back story but her legacy and the kind-heartedness of both the Spirit and her original half-elf self. She starts off as a an false goddess, becomes something like a god though not quite and still exists in Tales of Phantasia's time even when the worship of Martel as a goddess has long disappeared.


2) Arceus (Pokemon Diamond/Peark/Plantinum)

The alleged creator of the Pokemon universe and the first Pokemon-- indeed the first being-- to have ever existed. Arceus arose from an egg that formed in the sea of chaos that was where the universe would emerge form. Shortly after its birth it created two more beings from itself, the Dragons of Space and Time Palkia and Dialga whose existence allowed time and space to come into being. Arceus then created the three psychic pixes Azelf, Uxie, and Mespirt who embodied will, knowledge and emotions, traits essential to all sentient life. Together the six Pokemon of creation formed the universe, made up fo both physcial matter and spirit. After this great task, Arceus took to sleep in it own little universe, though part of it is still around in the Dragons Dialga and Palkia. It can only be awakened by the Azure Flute somewhere in the world. I love Arceus so much not only because of its mystical and elaborate backstory, but because this is from Pokemon.

Never did I think Nintendo would ever make a Pokemon creator-god and here it is! They never refer to it as a god (they closet they ever get is "deity," and that word is used to describe Dialga and Palkia). There is even some evidence that Arceus is worshipped in the Pokemon world since there is a church in HeartHome City that show Mt. Coronet, the sacred mountain closets to Dialga, Palkia and Arceus. Appearance-wsie, it is both unconventional and awe-inspiring. Arceus resembles a large antler-less deer with pure white furr, a black face and green eye with red irises. It's hooves are gold in color and it has a golden wheel fixed in its middle. It looks strange yet at the same time it's appearance makes it look divine. Arceus is also, appropriately, the most powerful of all Pokemon stats-wise. It's base total is 720, higher than Mewtwo, Rayquaza, Lugia, and other Pokemon with a stat total of 680. Using one of 16 type plates changes its own type and I wouldn't be surpirsed if it could change its type at will in the upcoming 12th Pokemon movie. It can learn nearly all TMs except for thoes requiring the use of arms.


1) The Mana Goddess (Seiken Densetsu/Mana series)

A goddess taht both never existed and has always existed. The story goes that at the beginning of time, the Mana goddess created the world with the Sword of Mana and the Light of Hope. Once she was done, she transformed herself into the Mana Tree, watching over the world and producing mana. The reality is that she did not exist at the beginning of time and was not always a goddess. The Mana Tree was intially dormant on the Island of Illusia. In Dawn of Mana At first the new Goddes had difficulty controlling her power, leading to mana itself and her "infant" the Scion of Mana nearly destorying the world. Eventually the Scion was returned to her and the island of Illusia was hidden in the sky so that no one could take the power of mana fro themselves. The Mana Goddess would eventually die, but a Faerie from the Mana Sanctuary (perhaps the Scion of Mana) merges with what's left of the Mana Tree and will become a new Mana Goddess over time. A line of humans called the Mana Clan also took on the task of becoming the new Mana Tree should be goddess/tree die again, which came to pass several times over the years. In Secret of Mana it seems that the Mana Tree and Mana itself is destroyed for good.

I rank the Mana Goddess the highest not only because of her elaborate story (so elaborate I would not be surpirsed if my summary was full of error. I played a grand total of two Mana games, Sword of Mana and Children of Mana) but because of how hard the many incarnation of the goddess fought to protect and perserve the world, yet ultimately fails. Though in the end she dies for good, the world, it seems, does not need mana as much anymore and can live on without it. Perhaps it happened on it own or she had something to do with it, realizing how often she kept being destoryed and restored and thinking that one day she and the tree would not return. The world and history of the Mana games has fascinated and charmed me ever since I first played Sword of Mana and it still does despite the fact that the series has pretty much stopped thanks to the many below-average games in the World of Mana compilation.
