Wow, I thought that Fable 2 bestiality glitch was bad. At least it was only a glitch.

I don't use adblock mainly because there are rare occasions where the ad pertains to me. True, it doesn't happen here, but every now and then I'll
see an MMO advertised I hadn't heard about before, and I'll give the site the once-over to see if it's worth investigating further.
And, sound-laden/Flash and pop-up aside, ads don't usually bother me that much. |

The fact that honestgamer's users are attracted to J-List says alot about that userbase. Well, basically it says that they're just a typical internet gamer community. Actually, I'm not even sure the word "gamer" is necessary in that sentence. |

Yeah, the first place I ever saw J-List ads was at Something Awful

I remember Colonel Craud of Fryingbear incessantly complaining about that site's misogyny in his blog, and I think he may have mentioned that about J-List.
He at least did mention something about the hentai ads all over the place.
Remember when ezboard was being supported by those creepy spy cameras? |

Interesting this thread was here, I was just thinking about this topic. I ran into an internet ad with sound that couldn't be turned off, for the first
time tonight... nothing short of teeth-grindingly annoying. Although I can see the commercial reasoning behind it (AN AD THAT CAN'T BE IGNORED WILL SURELY
GET THE ATTENTION OF AT LEAST A FEW, RIGHT!!??) I don't think it's at all effective, at least to anybody who doesn't have the gullibility of an
infant. An ad like that is mostly irritating, and irritation isn't perhaps the best emotion you want to instil in
people when you're trying to pursuade them to give you their business...
Internet advertising, though, hasn't been too bad so far. I'm sure it will get a lot worse. At least with pop-up blockers you can keep most of the junk off your screen, although the ads built into websites are harder to ignore. Especially since a lot of them now incorporate sound and video, which can slow down load times considerably... connections are slow enough in Australia as it is without having to put up with this junk. I'm not an anti-capitalist at all, far from it, but advertising is probably one of the more depressing aspects of consumer society. It worms its way into every aspect of your life (I genuinely think it's nearly impossible to go half an hour without being exposed to some form of advertising, unless you lie on your bed with your eyes closed) and often uses pretty underhanded methods to try and make a sale. People complain about driving down the street and seeing graffiti...billboards piss me off a lot more. At least graffiti isn't trying to make me buy junk, though maybe in the future companies will start paying graffers to tag 'COCA COLA' or whatever on overpasses instead of tag signs. I wouldn't put it past them. lol I went off on a rant. >.< Advertising bugs me. |

Crawl and 1OOO wrote:Depends what country you live in. I was referring more to the social effects of consumerism than the economic... advertising is dehumanising and, as its currently practiced, arguably amoral. Inequity to some degrees is an inevitable outcome of any (workable) economic system, and the economic inequities present in one capitalist country (like the US) aren't present in anywhere near the same degree as in others (like my own). I would say the large economic disparity between classes in the US isn't a flaw relating directly to the inherent nature of capitalism, but rather how it is currently being practiced in that country... Same goes for the consumer society and the problems created by advertising, which vary in degree of bullshittery from nation to nation. Capitalism and consumerism aren't perfect but they seem to work pretty efficiently. Ironing out some of the potential problems created by these systems is the task of responsible government regulation, which when done properly can create quite decent, livable societies. I just know advertising is foul and most people involved in that industry need their morals checked... shoving that junk in our faces 24/7 isn't helping anybody, except the small group of assholes lining their pockets off of our misery. |

I totally do not think we're on the same page. Having to watch "I feel like chicken tonight" (which can be avoided by turning off the TV) is dehumanizing and one of the
worst aspects of modern society? What?

The main reason ads keep getting more annoying is because ever since the internet began, advertisers and spammers have been getting away with advertising in
the most annoying ways possible. I don't think anyone wants spyware downloaded unknowingly on their computer or unsolicited junk emails, and yet we get
them all the time. I don't understand how money is even made off this stuff since everyone always complains about it, which would indicate to me that no
one's actually buying anything from it.

The ridiculous amount of ads, flash, java, and whatever shit is all over websites these days that makes them take forever to load (or not load at all) has
pretty much caused us to not be able to use our dialup service anymore. We're going to get cable or DSL as soon as we can frickin' afford it.
(Can't really use dialup much anyway. Need to leave the phone off the hook.) |

Why do all the ads for online college classes show young, attractive women?
What's up with these ugly-as-sin imvu avatar things that look like Bratz dolls?

Crawl and 1OOO wrote:"I feel like chicken tonight" is pretty goddamn awful, actually. Do they think we're idiots? etc. etc. I dunno, you must be kinda numb if that doesn't make you retch. I think we'll have to agree to disagree, because as far as I'm concerned all advertising should be restricted to ONE radio station and ONE TV station and NO BILLBOARDS. And take all the ads out of magazines and newspapers too. If I want to be advertised to I should have a choice... having it shoved in my face is just gross. |

It's one thing to hate commercials. But to say that commercials are the worst thing about modern life suggests that you have had a very sheltered life.

Crawl and 1OOO wrote:I'm pretty sure I didn't say they were the worst thing about modern life. I said that pervasive advertising is a very negative side-effect of consumer culture. If you actually look at the way that advertisers try to influence people into buying their products it IS pretty depressing. A society that really gave a shit about its citizens wouldn't allow them to be manipulated by money-grubbing assholes... that's the point I'm trying to get across here.

Unfortunately, in today's world you really need to advertise your product to get people to learn about it and buy it. The alternative is to do what the
Kirby vaccuum people do and that's far worse. (Google kirby vaccuum for some wonderful stories.)
