I didn't think Hermes seemed like a bad cat at all.

I feel so sorry for him! Mel and Pepper were playing in the large bedroom. Mel was playing on the jungle gym (I moved it up there today) and Pepper was playing
with some toys I put in there. But Hermes just watched from the hallway, wanting badly to play, too, but if he tries, they hiss at him. He's been made an
outcast.

Well, tonight and this morning I did hear him running around and "singing". I hope he doesn't get us in trouble.

Just a suggestion but if Caramel doesn't learn to like him and you still want a playmate for her, you could try introducing a kitten instead. It's
usually easier to introduce a kitten to an adult cat than an adult cat to another adult cat.
He is beautiful, though. I like longhairs, so I hope it works out and you get to keep him. |

FO said that there were a couple of conditions that need to be met for us to keep Hermes. First, he and Mel need to get along better. Unfortunately, this is
not really something Hermes can control. Mel had climbed up the tower to look at Hermes this morning. At first it looked really cute, but then we heard a
bobcat roar and, after a tussle, Mel ran away. We think it's possible she swatted at his face, which he doesn't tolerate.
The other thing is, if he has a chronic problem with his eye, and we'd need to put drops in every day for the rest of his life, unfortunately, that's just not something we'd be able to do. (My guess is that it probably isn't, since it doesn't look that bad -- it's just red and sometimes has a film) "Of the three ways in which men think that they acquire a knowledge of things--authority, reasoning, and experience--only the last is effective and able to bring peace to the intellect." -Roger Bacon |

Now that I look at that picture again, it does kind of look like I can see his third eyelids in the corners of his eyes. The fact that it's showing like
that when his eyes are open and he's eating (not sleeping or dozing off) might indicate a health problem. So yeah, you might want to have a vet check that
out.

That cat head in the lower corner of the second picture confused the heck out of me. Is that just a photograph on the side of a box or is that Pepper's
head looking up out of something and I'm just not able to figure out what's going on there?

That's a picture on the side of the jungle gym box. Pepper's ears aren't that long.

It also turns out that she's not two dimensional.

It's usually easier to introduce a kitten to an adult cat than an adult cat to another adult cat.I'm worried that Mel would be too rough with a kitten and I may not have time to watch over them again since I'm back to work next Monday. This is a sort of one-shot deal, since it takes Mel a minimum of 4 days to get used to a new cat, unless I get downtime again. I also don't like the prospect of adopting and returning cats until we find a "fit". Now that I look at that picture again, it does kind of look like I can see his third eyelids in the corners of his eyes. The fact that it's showing like that when his eyes are open and he's eating (not sleeping or dozing off) might indicate a health problem. So yeah, you might want to have a vet check that out. I mentioned that several times at the shelter because my cat guide books say the same thing, but the volunteers just kept telling me they didn't see anything wrong. I get one free vet appointment from the shelter and I have that set up for Saturday. Whether or not we return him, I'm taking to the vet because I want that looked at. I'm not going to just ignore it and return him unchecked. (If he does get returned, it would have to be Saturday after the vet visit because they're closed Sunday, and Monday I'm back to work and would have to leave him home alone with Mel for 8 hours. He doesn't seem to be a problem with Pepper so far.) |

I think they were just ignoring it because they didn't want to deal with it.

I think Mel's feelings are finally starting to shift from fear to curiosity. She followed Hermes upstairs awhile ago and I haven't heart any hissing or
growling coming from up there.
The result is that Pepper is going absolutely crazy chasing those catnip balls around the downstairs rooms. I have never seen her go at it quite like this before! She's running all over the place! Usually, what happens is that as soon as she starts playing, Mel jumps her and that's the end of it. She just attacked one of those fluffy toy mice for a few moments, then ran to the door and scratched the welcome mat. I wish you could see her like this. This is what I was hoping would happen - Hermes would distract Mel enough that she'd leave Pepper alone. Man, she just ran back and forth across the house, attacking a catnip ball on each pass. Wow. Maybe she really is a younger cat than we thought. But Mel was forcing her to live her life as a couch lump. |

Cute, cute, cute! I opened up the downstairs blinds again. Mel got on the cat castle and is just soaking up the sun. Then Pepper walked over and curled up into
a triangular sunny spot on the rug.

She's pretty! And welcome to the forums, too.
Crawl and 1OOO wrote: I don't want Mel's spirit to be broken, but it would be nice if he could "teach" her not to do that. I don't like it when she does that to Pepper and she takes neither my scolding nor Pepper's crying and hissing seriously. And one time I found a scratch above one of Pepper's eyes and more recently, there was a scratch on her ear. I don't think Mel intends to hurt Pepper, but she's just too rough when she plays and she doesn't seem to realize that what she does is harmful. It was more like "chirping". I'll bet his "singing" was much closer to what he was doing in the box when I brought him home in the car, and man, oh, man does he howl like a werewolf. Pepper cried out in the middle of the night again and I was honestly more worried about that getting us in trouble, because she's pretty damn loud when she does that. This time, it didn't even make any sense. I found her in the small bedroom, presumably eating Hermes's food, so it's not like she woke up from a nightmare, and the upstairs hall light was on, so she couldn't have been lost in the dark. Hermes and Mel were not bothering her, either, as they weren't anywhere close to that room at the time. |

9. Derailing TopicsThanks! And that's okay, don't worry about that rule. We had problems with a handful of users who would see a topic they didn't like and (instead of ignoring it) either intentionally try to change the subject or keep telling everyone to "shut up" over and over again, and that rule was created more for that reason. i work and sleep so i wont be able to spend as much time here as i like.---"Your site is awesome! I love it!"I know what that's like. I've been on layoff the past two months, so I've been around a lot more than usual, but I start a new job on Monday so I won't be around quite as much. My cats have enjoyed me being home, though. Just hope they can accept it when I'm gone 8 hours again. |

I don't want to make it sound like Caramel is some mean, evil cat. She's a good cat who just does bad things some times, and I think in most cases, she
doesn't intend to be hurtful. She's been snuggled in the microfiber blanket on the futon for about the past hour and when I go to pet her, she purrs
and rolls over on her back and lets me pet her belly and even her arms. She has never really let me pet her belly and arms like that before. Usually she'll
paw and nip at me if I try.
I feel sad about the way she feels right now. She does have a right to distrust this strange cat that's in her house. But if she does learn to like him, it will pay off for her in the long run. Today, Hermes was playing in the cubes, and I can just imagine Hermes and Caramel chasing each other in and out of them. That's something Mel wants Pepper to do with her, but whenever Mel darts out of the cubes and "tags" Pepper, Pepper just growls, hisses, and runs away. Hermes also likes to get at the end of the tunnel, wiggle his butt, and charge through it. He doesn't charge at any particular target like Mel does, though. His favorite place to sleep downstairs is the second-highest ring in the large cat tower. I think he likes it because it's the largest ring that any of our towers has and it has no hole in the bottom (some have a hole to let the cats climb up into them, but that one doesn't.) He might not be a bed sleeper. He's only been on the bed once and he didn't seem that impressed with it. I think he likes carpeting. He also doesn't eat much. He eats about a handful of dry food once or twice a day, and about as much wet food as Mel does, which is 1/8th of a small can of Friskies. (I don't think he even ate any of the food I put upstairs for him. I think Mel and Pepper ate it all.) Mel sometimes overeats, though. She vomited the other day and I think it's because she ate too much, too fast. Man, Pepper was sleeping on the futon earlier (where Mel is now) with her eyes open, and I could see her rapid eye movements. Which reminds me... there's a cat named Nudder at the shelter that sleeps with her outer eyelids open, but her third eyelids shut! It looks so disgusting. Like an alien or frog cat or something. (I stopped in the shelter today to update them on Hermes's status and Nudder had been moved to Hermes's cage...which is great because Nudder is a gray longhair, too, so at first it looked like Hermes was back in the cage and I had to wonder for a second if I was dreaming.)

I'm worried now that it may not be working out. I don't think he intends to be mean, but he plays even more roughly than Caramel and tonight he charged
at Pepper and Pepper got so scared, she let out a loud noise that I can't even describe. Crawl said Hermes didn't actually touch her and he did back
off, so it may not be a problem so long as he doesn't eventually start ignoring her wishes, the way Caramel does. Pepper may not like Caramel much, but it
seems she likes Hermes even less.
They both came downstairs and got near the food dishes. I think Pepper wanted some, but so did Hermes and he started eating. Pepper got close and he growled at her. Even Mel doesn't do that. I really like him and would hate to return him, but I don't want to feel scared when I'm at work for 8 hours that he's going to hurt Pepper (even if unintentionally). I won't put the blame on him if I have to return him. I'll tell them that it wasn't anything he did, but my cats just didn't accept him and I'd think he'd be best to go to a family that doesn't have any other pets. But he's got two more days to go (and I still want to get him to a vet.) |
