I think people I've talked with have been unimpressed by that.

But that's not really the point. Videogames are far too sequel driven as it is. Isn't it great that there's only one Citizen Kane, only one Lawrence of Arabia? After you do something right, you don't need to do it again.

It's one thing to do a sequel if there's some place for it to go. Castlevania 3 had room to expand on Castlevania 1. The Godfather 2 told stories about Vito and Michael Corleone that weren't told in the first Godfather.

But if you're gonna say, "You can't have a sequel to Star Tropics and do things differently!", what you're saying is that Star Tropics did what it did right, it doesn't need a sequel, and it's time to move on.

I understand that a sequel needs to break new ground AND be true to the original. But in that case, you still can't just say, "Star Tropics 2 should have been more islands!" You should at least suggest how that could have room for something new. The first game already had an island chain (stage 6), a volcano island (sort of - stage 3), a Goonies-like pirate stage (stage 5). There's not a lot of variety that you can really have with just tropical island after tropical island, and the first game already did the obvious variations -- if you want more islands, what exactly do you think they could have that would be different?

And all the overworlds of Star Tropics looked kind of the same. As far as that goes, one game, let alone two, was already too much of the same.

Obviously, both screenshots are blurry, but the first thing that strikes me about them is the top one is a bunch of squares in a grid, while the bottom one has more rounded edges.

I got about ten seconds into the third video. "This game is so disappointing. I have a bunch of items, but this boss is still hard!" Oh no!!!

I dunno, what's more vibrant, this screenshot from the ending of Star Tropics on C-Island:

That certainly looks better than it did on Youtube



I think a lot of the graphics in Zoda's Revenge's ending looks nice, actually.


I have a feeling I'm getting a little bit fanboyish here. It's not like I think Zoda's Revenge is some untouchable epitome of gaming greatness. But I just don't get the hatred for it.
