I feel like playing a better version of Heavenly Sword but I don't feel like playing God of War (nor do I own it). I should get back to Perfect Dark, but that doesn't excite me right now, either. Bleh.

I got a couple more balloons in DKR but my interest is kind of fading again. The hovercraft is a little on the annoying side. I do find some of the music to be
decent, though.

That's exactly where my interest in DKR almost completely slid away - as soon as the new vehicles got introduced. I enjoyed it while it was just carts, but
I didn't like getting bumped all over the place in those inner tubes. I did eventually finish the game, but I never got 100% of everything.

Medal of Honor (PS):
Completed the game today (99%!). Got Excellent Overall Ratings on all missions - many of which I was able to do on my first attempt. I had been forgiving previously of the game being rough round the edges but am disappointed that an enemy shot me through what seemed a solid wall. The "Treasure Caverns" stage was fairly interesting with the stolen art - I recognised a Van Gogh self-portrait and his 'Twelve Flowers In A Vase'. It was pretty cool messing around in the wireframe mode. Hoping my brother might be up for some MOH multiplayer action soon. Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2): Did a little exploring before I beat Dhoulmagus on the third try. It then took four attempts to win the subsequent boss battle - what helped was the ability Yangus learned on levelling up. Levelling up feels slow. Should my party be wiped out then I lose half my money, which was roughly the amount I would make when I headed straight for the boss and avoided unnecessary battling. I'm not so keen on keeping the money in and coming back to the one and only bank that I know of. I've yet to give the gambling a go though. In light of the previous bosses, not being able to skip the sequences sucks. Now, I am supposed to search for Jessica, but after teleporting to numerous places I'm told I should have spoken to some people - only it must be that I've yet to speak to the right persons, as no one seemed to shed light on the situation. Screw it, I don't have the patience to search - I've just FAQ'd where it was I'm meant to go. Hmm...
Not too hot at games, and not much better at writing reviews!

I said last that I was playing Chrono Trigger. Well, I got to about Azala and then got bored and then had a Super Mario Kart craving. I don't really feel
like going back to Chrono Trigger yet. I've been mostly practicing Special Cup on 150cc with the different characters. I usually use Bowser so it gives
some variety (It's a harder to play tiny with anybody else, too).

I tried playing Diddy Kong Racing, but I lost interest after not much time. I won the first four races, giving me 4 balloons. (No, wait -- the first three
races. I still had four balloons, because the first is a freebie) The next race takes 5 to unlock. So, I went back and found a key. And unlocked some
annoying flying mission, with seemingly terrible controls.
I think one of my problems so far is, I wasn't sure what, if anything, I was supposed to be learning from the game so early. Like, with Super Mario Kart, the first thing you learn is how to take corners and stay on the road at the same time. For this game ... who knows? And anything I may have learned had nothing to do with what I needed to know for flying. The control for flying seemed terrible (or maybe I wasn't used to it, but there's gotta be a better way to get used to it) For Perfect Dark, I totally forgot where the bomb is in the Carrington Institute, and 2 minutes hasn't given me enough time to find it. It seems like some of the hostages really are better at defending themselves. One guy says something about how he would have had to take care of the bad guys himself, and I thought that was humor, but once I rescued them last, and he did punch out his captor (right in front of me). I think the gun range guy might pull a gun on his captors, too. On the other hand, the people in the VR training area are hard to rescue. I think when I did this stage before, I used the Combat Boost there (which gives you slow motion, for easier head shots). On Agent, though, those hostages can be killed without ending the mission. |

Flying controls seemed about on par with the karts to me (maybe it works better with the official controller), but like I said, that hovercraft was driving me
nuts, I felt like I had almost no control over it sometimes.

I don't know how it works in the races, but I had trouble "landing" in the egg minigame, and if I flew against a wall, I'd be totally stuck;
it'd be a pain to get out and gain altitude again.

I haven't touched Dracula X since my last post, or any Castlevania game
at all for that matter, as I've been rather preoccupied with Super Mario Galaxy. I've had it for nearly two
weeks now and gotten around 73 stars, though I haven't bothered going to the final battle yet. Despite all my prerelease bitching, I've actually
enjoying it quite a lot, even if the camera loves to be a right asshole during gimmicky stages. Those sticky ball slingshot things are a pain when the camera
makes it hard to tell precisely what direction you're headed.
I've also been playing Super Mario World briefly, getting up to the Forest of Illusion, though I skipped most of world 2 and 3 thanks to the pipe shortcut. Got 100% on all the regular stages in Yoshi's Island, and aim to get the same score on the secret stages soon. I also beat the final boss of Wario Land: The Shake Dimension today, though I still need to complete the challenges, find some treasures and get the secret maps, so I've still got plenty to do. And despite playing these games that, you know, I actually think are good, I've got an inexplicable craving for Battletoads. I don't know why. Could be because of all the talk of Rare games. I probably won't bother unless I can shanghai my brother into taking part, as I've given up playing beat-em-ups in solitude. |

Only the first stage of Battletoads is a beat-em-up. The rest is obstacle courses and normal platforming.

Okay, true, and the very first part of the turbo tunnel, but that's only about 1/4 of the stage.

Battletoads is difficult to play 2-player because you can injure each other and if both players aren't at the same skill level, one will always hold back
or screw up the other. Sethra and I played Battletoads together sometimes but we could never beat it that way. I eventually beat it on my own.

Boy, that was stupid. I didn't need to "find" any "bomb". I just needed to read the stage description. It says that the bomb is on
the skedar craft, so you need to "hack" it to make it fly away (shades of Independence Day). So, I beat that stage, and also the stage where Jo
escapes from the Skedar ship. So, I'm on the last stage.

I'll tell you what Folklore is like now, even if you don't give a crap.
Probably the only reason I even remembered that this game existed is because I was kind of fond of the box art when the game was released. It starts off on the slow side with a lot of story before you get to have even minimal control. And even after you do, it's mostly walking from one conversation into another. The fully animated story sequences aren't too bad, but a lot of the storytelling takes place in comic book style slide shows that are pretty damned boring. Even so, I finally did start taking some interest in what was going on. On the HDTV/SDTV front, the text seems a little small and appears blurry if you're too far from the set. But it's still well within the readable range. It's about some guy who writes for an occult magazine and some girl looking for her possibly dead mother, and their adventures in exploring the Netherworld on a quest for answers. Combat system is hard to judge. It has potential, but it'll probably just end up being a button masher. It seems that you defeat creatures and then can use their attacks. By performing certain tasks, like killing a bunch more of that creature, their ability levels up and becomes more useful. Right now, I just have two- a basic attack and a shield. I wonder how many creatures there are and how many skills there'll be (and also how varied they might be). It looks like you need to play through the game as both characters in order to complete it, and they share the same levels. I plan to alternate so I don't end up with one character really far ahead of the other one. The land of the dead is kind of fairy tale-ish so far, and while it's a heck of a lot more interesting to look at than this game's version of the real world, it's not as impressive as I would have hoped. The game reminds me a little bit of Kameo and that was a prettier game. Also, I'm probably just spoiled by having played Heavenly Sword, but the people I've seen have very plastic-looking skin. Edit: I edited some of that to readability, but it's still bad. I'm too tired to be making a post.

Argh!! I don't know if I can beat Perfect Dark with am emulator. There's a part where you need to use IR vision to identify a weak spot in the wall
and then blast it with a rocket. However, when I equip the IR goggles, I just get a solid black screen. Great! I also don't remember where you're
supposed to blast it from my previous experiences with the game. Hrm. Maybe I could try messing with settings; I don't know. It doesn't make a lot
of sense to me that the emulation is so good outside of that one thing, which seems like it should be simple (but what do I know).
I screwed around for a few minutes with some NES Roms. I think my brother can't believe that I've only ever beaten the first game in the Dragon Warrior series (he's only played them on Game Boy, but he's beaten the first three that way). I played a few minutes of DW2. I don't know if I want to stick with it, though. |

Hooray for Fable exploits! I found out how to get my Combat Multiplier to pretty much as high as I want it. Only catch is it'd take forever to get it to
999 if it even tops at that, so I decided to be cute and leave my Highest Combat Multiplier at 777, and that took me two and a half hours. I got so much EXP
out of this I maxed out by General Experience (999,999) and had enough Will experience to buy all the remaining spells, and still had about 10,000 left over.
Man, how many times did I use Lightning? I cast Divine Fury almost constantly for those two hours, but my favorite spell is still Lightning! Seriously though, I think it's time to finally lay this game to rest. |

Folklore is dragging a bit. When you switch characters, you don't retain anything at all, so it really is like playing the game through twice, except that
you're forced to do it in order to beat it. The netherworld and the living world feel like two different games, with the latter feeling more like some kind
of a light mystery adventure.
It looks like there are dozens of different enemy powers and you have to experiment a bit to defeat certain enemies and bosses. Man, even trying to talk about this game here is boring the hell out of me so I'm just going to stop now. |

I wonder if Dragon Warrior 2 could be paced a little faster than the first one? I think I'm up to level 5 already. I made it to the Spring where the
Prince of Cannock (sp?) was supposed to be. I don't know if I'll be able to make it out, though, and save.

Bah! My laptop updated / restarted, and I lost my Dragon Warrior 2 save. FCE Ultra doesn't really save your game data, even when you save in the game.
It only writes to the save file when you quit the program. So, if the program quits unexpectedly, it's gone.
But I'm almost back to where I was. I'm at level 6 at Cannock Castle. I doubt I made it to level 7, since that takes over 240 experience (it was [very, very approximately] 120 for level 6, 64 for level 5, 30 for level 4, 20 for 3, and maybe 10 for 1 and 2.) I might try for level 7 before going to the Spring of Bravery, anyway, just to make it easier than last time. |

I guess it wouldn't hurt to do a random save state every now and then.
I've now completed chapter one of Folklore with both characters. I guess it's growing on me just a little. It looks like when you play through as the second character, some of the enemies (and therefore the powers available) are different, and weaknesses may be changed. I ended up fighting the same boss as before, but the method for killing it and the attacks used were somewhat altered. When you defeat a creature and want to absorb it's power, you have to make this annoying upward motion with the controller that's a fine example of how motion control in games is pointless garbage 99% of the time. With the major enemies, it becomes this prolonged 30 second tug of war to absorb them. The game feels very, very lonely. Everybody is either really serious, angry, depressed. The main town is a pretty isolated, drab and depressing place by design. The part of the netherworld I've been exploring has a sad beauty to it, but it's mostly populated with mindless spirit creatures trying to kill you and the nearly emotionless "good" beings that live in that realm.
