It's hard for me to remember all the distinctions, but I seem to recall

--Black bears will hunt humans for food. Grizzlies are more likely to kill humans when they're surprised.

I always forget about the "play dead" thing. I'm gonna guess it's ineffective against black bears since they want to kill you anyway, then eat you when you're dead. From other stories I've heard (not dependent on species), it sounds like that's never a good option if you can do anything else.

--Despite that, Grizzlies will hunt and eat Black bears!
