I'm cutting way back on red meat |

I think I've been eating too much red meat since I moved to Ohio. I've gone back to eating salads more often instead.

That's good for you, FO. Cutting back on red meat hopefully means we'll keep you around a lot longer. =P I cut back on my pork intake awhile ago. I know you don't eat it at all, but I have a soft spot for ham sandwiches and pepperoni pizza. I don't eat a lot of red meat now as it is, but I've been trying to stay slim. Not only for health and appearance, but it's annoying and costly to buy a new wardrobe. |

i thought about going on a marcobiotic diet, but i seem to be sensitive to beans including soya products. so there's no way i'm going to cut back on
meat and dairy products unless i want to go to the toilet more often than it's healthy to.

Leave me to my own devices and I'll eat way too much meat for my own good. It doesn't help that it's my favorite food group.
I don't feel satisfied if there isn't some meat in my meal. Even chicken I eat with skin. I let my tastebuds rule over health. It doesn't help that I shop on an empty stomach, which is a no-no. Impulse buying is bad.

I made turkey wings for dinner tonight.
Holy crap, they were inedible. Remind me to never do that again. They're more bone and skin and gristle than meat, that makes them tough and difficult to get the meat off, and it doesn't taste particularly good, and even if you go through the effort to slowly carve the meat off and try to stomach it, there's so little it's not satisfying... Ugh. Yeah, I think if I make turkey in the future, I'll need to stick with thighs and breasts. They didn't have those at the store, which is why I took the risk. (I don't remember the last time I made wings) Even drumsticks are kind of a pain in the ass to eat. I made fresh mashed potatoes with dinner, and at least those were good. |

I'll still eat a steak or roast for dinner now and then, but I realized that I was eating way too much red meat in other things, too. So, basically I'm
cutting out things like:
TV dinners with beef products (I'll stick to the chicken, turkey, and Chinese ones) Beef pizza (If Crawl still wants to get half of a pizza with beef, that's fine, but I want 1/2 to be vegetables for me. I always got mushroom pizza in NJ, but ever since I moved to Ohio, I almost always eat beef pizza.) Roast Beef subs (I'll stick to turkey, tuna, and chicken) There are some areas in which I had already pretty much cut out red meat. I almost never get red meat of any kind of buffet restaurants, like the Chinese one. I sometimes got Roast Beef at the American one, but I'll either cut that out entirely or just take very little. And we haven't eaten homemade spaghetti in a long time. I almost never order meat sauce at Italian restaurants because I don't know of any that are only beef, they all have pork. I almost never get desserts at these places anymore (except fruit) because they rarely have anything I like anyway. I might still occasionally have a beef taco at Taco Bell (I have a weakness for those), but I almost always get either the Chicken Zesty Bowl or a chicken burrito anyway. I'm also cutting back on snacks and trying to substitute lower-calorie, healthier foods for things like ice cream and chocolate. I take salads to work instead of going to the vending machine. If I do have to go, I try to get the most low-calorie thing possible, such as White Cheddar Popcorn (I can't eat the kind with butter because I'm allergic to it) or Soy Crisps. I still would like to go out for ice cream sometimes in the summer (when all the ice cream places are open), but maybe only once a week now (and on the weekend when I have more time to exercise it off.) |

TV dinners with beef products (I'll stick to the chicken, turkey, and Chinese ones)I was surprised, though, at the calorie content of the Banquet select recipes pot roast one. 180! For a meal, that's like diet food territory. I'm surprised they're not playing that up more. The normal fried chicken is almost 500 calories, and the select recipes one is maybe 700. I wouldn't mind getting pizzas without beef. The first meal FO and I ever had together, when I visited her in New Jersey after getting off the plane, was a mushroom pizza. |

The pot roast Banquet dinners aren't that bad as far as fat and calories go, but it's also not one of my favorites. I might still occasionally eat one
if I just get in the mood for something different. Fried chicken is the unhealthiest kind, but I don't usually get that kind. I get the grilled barbecue
chicken.

i would think regular doses of chocolate would be good for your health. high in antioxidants and complex carbohydrants(sp?). just try to avoid the milky ones
which have more fat.

Only if it's dark chocolate, but there are other (healthier) ways of getting the antioxidants it has.
My mother read an article once about that and she bought a huge bag of chocolate at the mall and went around from store to store bragging to each cashier how healthy it was and joking that she was going to eat the whole thing. That was one of the reasons I stopped going to the malls with her. |

I found it amusing that this topic was juxtaposed directly atop the topic about that man eating 23,000 Big Macs (though many will question the meat content of
Big Macs). That is, before I typed this message.

It's a good thing I am cutting out the Salisbury Steak Banquet meals. I told someone that this was the last Salisbury Steak I would be eating for awhile because I'm reducing red meat in my diet (I had one left in the freezer and had to use it up). They joked that it probably doesn't have much real meat in it anyway. I said, okay, let's look at the ingredients - and I noticed that there is pork listed in them! I'm pretty sure I checked the ingredients for the Salisbury Steak once before a long time ago and I don't remember seeing pork there. So either I missed it, or they started adding pork at some point for whatever reason and there was no way I would have ever known they did. That might explain why the Salisbury Steaks sometimes upset my stomach. There were a few times when I wouldn't buy them for awhile because they made me feel kind of nauseas after eating them. |

Most salisbury steaks seem to have pork. There was one I found at Busch's Valuland I think it was RediServe brand that didn't, 6 patties for 1.99 (no
gravy) but I can't find it anymore.

I've basically given up pork for the past 15 years, but I'm sure I must have inadvertently had some a few times since then. You really have to be
vigilant. I noticed turkey sausage at the grocery store, for instance, is packed in pork casing.
But I think I'm more likely to have gotten pork from restaurants. Some places put pork in weird things. Personally, I think it's weird that places put bacon in with green beans (probably don't want to have the vegetables be too nutritious!) although it is extremely common. According to Wikipedia, Salisbury steak is just beef. It used to be called hamburger steak. I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that it would have been purely beef. I found this post from someone else who just found this out: Gale of Sacramento on July 31st, 2008 |

And I got indigestion from it. Glad it's the last one of that kind I'll ever eat.

Seriously, before the movie last night we went out to dinner at a Chinese buffet. They have two of the same franchise around here, and we went to the farther
one. The closer one seems like it's getting more conservative. It has been phasing out it's more "exotic" stuff. I used to like their
peanut [butter] chicken, but they got rid of that a long time ago. They even got rid of their Mongolian beef.
Well, the farther one had Mongolian, so I figured I'd have some, since it's not a common thing. But, you know, when you're not used to eating beef ... beef isn't very good. It's so dense compared that it's like eating a brick of food. |

I still eat meat occasionally, but I'm pretty close to being vegetarian (for health reasons mainly, but also the fact that I only really like meat when
it's prepared certain ways. I won't eat chicken when its flavorless or steak if it's not tender and good.)
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great. -

I wish I could become a vegetarian, but it's so hard to do. Maybe once I'm out of my parents' house and living on my own, and can make my own
decisions about what food to buy it will be easier.

I think being a vegetarian would be a very difficult thing to do. I know a lot of omnivores who eat meat who act really sarcastic towards vegetarians, like,
"Oh, if you're not eating meat, I'll need to eat twice as much now to cancel you out," or, "Oh, you think it's a big deal that
you're a vegetarian? Wake me up when you cure cancer." But I do respect vegetarians. If it wasn't a big deal to be a vegetarian, then more
people would be vegetarians.

I also hope you get a decently-paying job, because the biggest problem I had with being a vegetarian when we tried it is how expensive our grocery bills were. And we had to keep buying food more often because fruits and vegetables only last a few days before they go bad. You can't freeze them like meat. |

How you could eat this swill is beyond me. I just looked up the ingredients for a man who told me that it has pork in it, and sure enough, it is listed right after beef.
Look here for more information on the Banquet Salisbury Steak ingredients and nutrition information:

He is allergic to pork and developed a huge boil (his usual reaction) after eating it. This is a warning to anyone who has this allergy, is Jewish or Muslim and prefers to remain kosher or halal.
