I came across my original Dragon Warrior cart that I've had since I was six years old. I have one of those 3rd party top loading NES systems so I wanted to
give it a try. I gave it a quick alcohol cleaning and tried but it didn't work. I got various solid color screens but not much else. I cleaned again, much
more thoroughly and tried again to load it. I powered off and on maybe 15 to 20 times, trying to wiggle the cart in various ways even though it was a top
loader. I would occasionally get bits of garbled stuff that seemed to indicate it was reading some kind of data from the cartridge. I cleaned a final time just
to be safe and went back to trying to get the game to load. After another 10 or so tries I got the Dragon Warrior title and music to play. But as soon as I hit
start, it would play two notes of music and then freeze. More wiggling and resetting, I finally get a proper boot.
And the battery works and ALL MY SAVE FILES ARE STILL THERE.
One is "Bond" which leads me to believe it was from 1999 or so since the Game Pond is the only time I ever used that as a nickname. The other two saves are both my real name, so it's a mystery as to how old they are. It would be great if it turned out they were 15 year old files on there.
