McCain, Clinton support suspending it, Obama does not

One question is, how much IS the Federal Gas Tax, anyway? It turns out it's only $0.184 / gallon. It does seem like getting rid of it would be putting a tiny bandaid on a big problem, since gas prices around here went up by about $0.70 / gallon in the past couple of weeks!

This guy can get 59 mpg in a plain old Accord.

And, at the risk of spoiling the article, he got 181 mpg in an Insight to win a competition.

This does sound completely pointless. It's a smart thing for them to do in an election season, I guess, but saving about $30.00 over the summer is not going to be life changing for me.

As high as gas prices are, I'm willing to take anything at this point. Heck, maybe it'll be good for me either way. I'm gonna get in much better shape riding my bicycle around town.

Damn, gas is even more expensive here! It was $3.79 (and 9/10)/gallon when I left Ohio, and a saw some places here selling it for $4.09.

I saw a news thing that said the nation average is about $3.65.

Gas prices here: A week ago gas was 3.59. Monday it was somehow 3.49 at several places. Back up to 3.59 now.

Opps, that sentence was ambiguous. Anyway, the influences on gas prices are complicated. Some of the price is driven up by speculation on futures, and is not really related to primary supply and demand.

Another issue is political -- how much profit are gas companies allowed to make before it's considered "gouging"?

However, I've heard that when you take into account our tax money that funds the military, which protects oil as it moves to America, the real price of gas is over $6/gallon.

I've noticed a significant decrease in the amount of traffic during rush hour the past couple of days. Is it that...

1) More people are carpooling because of the high gas prices?

2) There are usually a LOT of people driving during rush hour who don't necessarily have to be, but are choosing not to now because of the high gas prices?

If #2 is true...c'mon, people! Can't you go places before or after rush hour??? I hate the high gas prices, but I've been rather enjoying the rides home where there are no long lines at lights, and I make far more green lights than get stopped at red, and I'm almost always at least able to do the speed limit.

I am really tempted to try riding a bike to work. The main problems would be that I'd have to travel on and cross some busy roads (we're not close -- by car, it's not bad, but I wouldn't be surprised if the trip took the better part of an hour by bike), and that I'd need to leave my laptop at work.

We're in the 3.60 to 3.70 range now on average, and according to a price tracking site I just checked, there's one station in this city at $3.84.

It's seriously unbelievable that our government is just allowing this to go on and on and on. I read today that during Memorial Day weekend, AAA would normally be filled with people planning vacation travel. But this year, it was like a ghost town.

I think it's only a matter of time before this cripples our entire economy.

We got a more people traveling here this year, I think because people are going to the Jersey Shore instead of more distant and expensive locations.

Prices within the city are now $3.80 to $3.89 according to MSN's station listings. Two stations in Margate are at $3.99

Fortunately, we only get gas every 2 or 3 weeks because we work within a mile of home and don't go off the island often. Honestly shouldn't be driving on the island at all, but I can be a damned lazy bastard.

Some places have gone above $4.00 here. On Thursday at lunch, I gassed up my car, and it was about $3.80. Then, on the way home, I saw some stations that were selling it at $4.20!

BTW, thanks, CB007, for pointing out the MSN gas price tracker.

Something weird -- most places around here were $3.999, or higher (up to $4.209), but there was one gas station that was just 1 cent cheaper.

According to MSN, though, there's one station that's 1 cent cheaper than that.

I think that's what a lot of people had thought was the truth, but since the oil companies can get away with making the prices go higher and higher they don't have any reasons not to.

Some state employees in Utah are shifting to a 4 day work week (10 hour days) so they don't have to drive back and forth to work as much so they can save some gas.

Other states are considering following suit.
