This is a topic where I'll bring up things that were said here in the past that were completely retarded. But I'm making a new thread for them instead of replying to the old topics so that (1), I can have an entire topic for this thing and (2), so that I don't encourage a lot of replying to old dead arguments. Anyway, this by Thormachine1 in response to someone saying they didn't like KoRn:

as for KoRn...how very snide....so then what DO you listen to? A never ending stream of obscure RPG game music?

TermiteJr once said something nearly identical to this at the Game Pond when someone said they didn't like Limp Bizkit. I don't remember his exact quote and the post is probably long-gone by now, but it was something like, "What do you listen to then, Celine Deon?"

WTF is up with people saying things like this??? If I had to pick the single most retarded internet argument ever, this would probably be it, or at least in the running. How can anyone seriously think there are only TWO types of music in the world? How hard is it, for example, to find a classic rock station? Or a jazz station? Or an oldies station? Or even a fucking rap or country station for poie's sake? Even if you assume only one radio station exists (that apparently only plays KoRn or Limp Bizkit and Celine Deon), have you NEVER seen a movie, or a TV show, or even a goddamn commercial for crying out loud that had some older song in it and wonder where that music came from?

That's nowhere near as bad as thinking there are only two types of music. Not even close.

The main reason I even brought this one up because it wasn't even the first time I'd seen it. (If I can find the TermiteJr post, I'll link it, but I doubt it still exists...)

Edit - If the Game Pond was a Yuku board, and the post still exists, I'd probably be able to find it quite easily. But unfortunately, going through topic by topic in the music forum is just making me want to kill people, including myself, because everyone sounded so stupid back then. (And for half of my own posts, I don't even remember what I was talking about anymore.)

I'll have to find some of Rand's replies to me. There was one where he picked on something I said in a review and when I defended my statement, he got really pissed off and acted like I was making personal attacks on him when he started it. I just ignored him after that because he was acting like such an idiot, I figured his behavior would speak for itself. (And that AFTER he made some announcement about how he was becoming really religious and preaching forgiveness and being nice.)

I won't say because I'm not sure the person really was who he said he was or a faker, but I will say I'm the one he mouthed off at. I mouthed him back, though, and I don't think he expected it. The reason he got on my case was because I corrected something he said about BJ and it pissed him off. BJ came and set him straight, too, but as usual, was a lot nicer about it than me.

I never even heard of Korn and Limp Bizkit until N-Sider chat people started talking about them all the time. I still don't know if I've ever actually heard any of their songs.

Was Thormachine1 really just a random person or do you know who he was? Seems awfully coincidental that he'd use a TermiteJr argument and that they both have names that begin with a "T", end with an "e", have an "rm" in the middle, and a suffix. Especially since Jr's been known to change his name around and pretend to be new.

That was MiyamotoLover in the very early days of the Game Pond. I doubt that would still be around.

If I remember correctly, ML said that in response to Deathspork criticizing EGM for giving NES games negative reviews.

He said things like that a lot. Usually, the N64 game was Smash Bros., but I think there's a chance he might have varied the NES game. I know I saw him use that combination at |tsr's forum.

Addendum: Some of those satire reviews exaggerate opinions, or make up opinions for the sake of humor. But others just basically paraphrase things I've actually seen others say. You might have guessed that was an example of me exaggerating the "all systems are equally great!" thing, but nope. It was a paraphrase (and not from Miyamotolover, it turns out -- though for all I know, he might have agreed anyway. It'd be consistent with his other opinions).

I also can't read game reviews anymore. That one made no attempt to be written at a level above a quick message board rant. Takes too long to get to the point (and I'm not sure there is a point). On the other hand, one of Berardinelli's reviews is about 5 or 6 paragraphs. There's not less information, just less rambling.

But, anyway, I don't think I could use that one, because I'm trying to have new ones be funny as well as sarcastic.

That's what you get when someone has a knee-jerk reaction to something negative being said about something they like. They immediately go on some pointless counteroffensive, without really thinking about the point the first person was making, and certainly without bothering to think about whether their own comeback makes sense.

Regarding the Korn/Celine Dion thing, that person was just trying to be insulting. There's no way he really supposed that there are only two types of music, which is what you seem to object to. He was saying "If you don't like Korn, you must be gay," only he was saying it by naming the 'gayest' music he could think of: Celine Dion. People manage variations of that argument all the time. "If you don't like Halo, go back to enjoying Cooking Mama you freak!" or "You don't like The Crow because you're too busy watching Ella Enchanted for the 700th time!" They're immature arguments, but their basis is different than suggested in this thread. The goal is to make you stupid for not having good taste like the person making the stupid accusations.

Honestly, I thought of that, but I don't quite buy it. For the simple reason that if they really were aware of other types of music, then they would be aware that a simple comeback with those types of music is to be expected. In fact, that's exactly what happened in the TermiteJr example. The person he said that to replied and said something like, "No, I like blues, jazz, and heavy metal", and then that was the end of it.

I mean, they may be AWARE of other music's existence, but a lot of people seem to think that no one actually listens to it. There was this mentality that I saw throughout my gradeschool years that you weren't supposed to listen to "the music your parents listened to". So if all contemporary stations play are stuff like KoRn or stuff like Celine Deon, that's probably what they seriously think everyone listens to.
