Have you ever seen a game get a lot of praise for something that you had actually seen in another game before? In most cases, it probably have been in a game that was somewhat obscure.
One example I can think of is that Crawl was once telling me that some people were really impressed with how Resident Evil used different sound effects for when your character was walking on wooden floors, or carpets, or other types of floor.
The funny thing about that to me is that Equinox actually does the same thing. When you walk on the brick floors of Galadonia the footsteps are different than they are when you walk on the sandy floors of Atlena or the wooden planks of the Ghost Ship. They might be different for the flooring in other dungeons, too, but I'd have to listen closely again.
I guess another example might be how some people thought Chrono Trigger was the first RPG to have combo attacks and a time travel plot, although Magic of Scheherazade had both and Final Fantasy Legend 3 had time travel.
