Hey, if someone has broadened their mind, and is trying to be respectful of all people, that's one thing.

This isn't that, though. For one thing, it's not just for people. You're supposed to defend inanimate objects as well.

And it's not presented as a moral issue (and even if it was, a wise person wouldn't be trying to force their morality off on others). They're acting like it's some sort of LOGICAL CONTRADICTION to treat any two vaguely similar things slightly differently.

The real thought behind this seems to be, You're supposed to defend things. I guess they, in their groping, struggling way, see it as some type of intellectual honesty.

Hey, every (for example) videogame system has some good points, so if someone complains about one, you're supposed to step up and point out those good points.

But I have never said I should defend every thing. I have never said that all viewpoints are equally valid. In fact, I've always said the opposite -- that some things are better than others.

So there's no contradiction for me to treat things differently -- I've been saying that from the beginning.

Well, a similar thing is "No game is made for everybody, and if you don't like it, it's because it wasn't made for you, so you can't judge it!"

Right. Dora the Explorer games aren't made for anyone over 6. Does that mean it's a great game?

And yeah, different games are made for different people; some games are made for people with standards, and some for people without.

This was also used at the Bad Webcomics Blog: "Where's YOUR webcomic?"

It just makes no sense as a comeback.

For myself personally, drawing is not one of my big hobbies. It's not a craft I have spent hours and hours upon improving. Even so, I expect I could draw better than, say, Kismetropolis.

But let's suppose I couldn't. I guess that's what that argument assumes: That if YOU tried something, it wouldn't be that great.

But ... uh ... so what? The people that are defending flawed things apparently like things even if they're bad, so how can they criticize your creation for being bad?

OK, for the sake of argument, let's say that you DO go out and make a better game. Would the antagonist acquiesce and say, "OK, you now have the right to criticize my favorite game."?

No. He'd say, "LOL your game sux," no matter how good your game actually is.

Of course, you could then use his own logic against him and say, "Unless you can make a better game, you cannot criticize mine."

But by then it's already degenerated into an internet argument so there's no reason to pursue it further.

Like, say the comment was made in regards to Twilight Princess. Then what does it mean to ask if you could do better? If you had access to the Zelda copyright and a hundred Nintendo employees working under you?

My brother is the only one who sort of touched on this "favorite comeback" earlier in the topic but the one that annoyed me the most (besides that "You're an idiote" thing that became so famous) is "That ____ is gay."

It's like the "let's see you do better" thing except instead of actually making a game, you might suggest a similar game that's better. And then the person responds with "That game is gay".

a repartee which ends an irrational argument is, in my opinion, usually just (sometimes witty) rhetoric, or something easier to remember than a full explanation. you were expecting me to fully support and acknowledge that people, in so-called arguments, only give silly contradictory statements instead of proper arguments? or give some examples which are gaming-related? the topic title does say "favourite comeback(repartee)" and not "i hate senseless repartee, give me proper arguments".

Crawl said that the "Vanilla Ice Defense" might be too ambiguous because he's said a lot of crazy things and had even crazier arguments to defend them, but at least one person here got what I meant, so I think it's cool.

Also, I think that incident is the most infamous. It was featured on some TV special years ago about "the most outrageous things ever said on television", and even one of my supervisors at my former job mentioned it one day.

I remember when doctors were saying there was an epidemic of rumble-related injuries. People are stupid and hurt themselves easily. At the beginning of Mario Galaxy, there's an image of how not to play and it shows the player both hitting someone in the head and knocking over a vase. And in addition to the wrist strap (which I don't use because I'm not a moron) there's now the Wii condom.

I used to mess up my hand really bad with Mario Party. Several games required you to spin the control stick around, and I would always use the palm of my hand.

I guess everyone else did too, because Nintendo put a warning about that on their site and made sure all the other Mario Parties didn't have spin-the-control-stick games (which is great, because they're shit)

Panasonic is making a Wii-proof TV.

I'm not denying that some people are dumb, but sometimes I think it is just an honest mistake. If you're simulating playing a baseball game and you've played real baseball before, it's probably a natural reflex by now to let go of the object in your hand at some point. Something with that shape and with smooth edges can also easily slip if your hands get sweaty.

Sorry, I still have no sympathy for anyone who causes physical or property damage playing the Wii. Every game has a warning about using the strap when you turn it on and to be careful with your movements.

Now personally, I don't use the strap the majority of the time. I don't think anyone who's used a game controller before would really need to. I haven't played them all by any means, but I've not seen any Wii game yet where you'd ever use enough motion to send the remote flying into your TV or flying anywhere at all. If I had a big screen TV that cost thousands of dollars, I'd probably consider it just to be on the safe side.

On another subject, a lot of Xbox 360 games are designed with HDTV's in mind and so the text can be nearly unreadable on a standard set. Many developers keep us cavemen in mind and make the text large enough. But whenever there's a complaint about a game that doesn't, there's part of the gaming population who comes back with lines like this:

"If you could afford a 360, you could afford an HDTV. It's stupid to have one without the other, and so you're stupid for complaining about this."

That just infuriates me.

You know what's even better? People (they must be practically mummies) who are pissed that the best Blu-Ray player is a PS3. There are actually people who don't want to have a game system in with their other hi-fi equipment, or even in their house. They actually would be willing to pay more for a Blu-Ray player that had LESS features than a PS3, just to avoid having something that could theoretically play a videogame.

They are people that are too old to give a shit about Nintendo vs. Sony. They don't want videogames in their house, period.

Steve Burke: The single biggest problem with the PS3 is that it can be used to play games. I personally don't understand how any responsible parent can allow his/her children to play games - it is addictive, and it may lead to carpal tunnel symdrome. Just having the PS3 in the house opens up that possibility.

Lately, the kids have been asking to play games on it [...]. So we are going to sell the PS3 so this issue will not come up at all.

BuckNaked: [I] recently capitulated, and bought a PS3 to go purple while all this nonsense continues to sort itself out.

I hate that it's a game console, which I do not need, and that it has 40 Gigabytes of unneeded HDD space.

MauneyM: I WILL NOT allow any game console to be connected to my HT. I have 4 kids, and I have worked very hard to impress upon them that we will NOT burn up hours on my projector bulb for games. Thus, I will NOT - UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - connect a game machine to my projector.
Period.

If the PS3 happens to be the best BD player available, then tough. I will do without BD until they release out a product that meets my needs at a reasonable price.

Of course, there are a few HD-DVD fanboys who hate Sony, too.

When you have a house full of kids, it's just something I can imagine happening regardless of precautions. And I'm not the type of person who's going to scream at a kid and call him stupid because he slips and makes a mistake.

I don't know how much market there would be for the Wii-proof TV, but if someone owns or plans to own a Wii and was going to be getting a new TV anyway, it's an option to think about, I suppose.

*sigh* I guess I'm just the kind of parent who believes that videogames are okay, even good in moderation. But who am I to tell others how to raise their kids?
