If you need advice for something, there really isn't anyplace you can go.

I was telling Crawl that I really need help with the swordfight scene AT6, but there's really no place I could go to ask for advice on it, because (1) I don't trust that anyone else really knows any more than I do and that their suggestions would be an actual improvement and (2) if I asked for a source of inspiration I'd probably just get directed to some bullshit anime where swords and people go flying in midair and there are no real rules except what gets made up as it goes along.

Fuck, I'm just feeling really helpless and jaded right now...

Try as I may, though, I can't really think of any great cartoon swordfight scenes. There are few in good ones even in live action movies. Rob Roy probably has the best one. Maybe the original Star Wars trilogy, although sometimes in those ones it looked to me more like they were trying to hit the lightsabers than each other. (I don't think I'm the only one who thought that. When I was a kid and other kids would play "Star Wars", that's exactly what they'd do.)

I told FO she might want to see 300, because a) that movie was based on a comic book in still pictures and b) the comic book influence does show through, because instead of being sped up like most modern action scenes, the fight scenes segue into slow motion to emphasize the "action poses" that would be shown in a still frame.

The only thing is, I don't believe there are any "duels" in that movie. It's army against army, not an extended battle of individual against individual.

Is the reason you're having difficulty with it...

1). You drew a few scenes and don't like the way they look? Because I thought what you had so far was looking really good. (And I hate to say this knowing how you feel about it, but you ARE good at doing facial expressions.)

2). You drew a few scenes and now don't have any idea where to go next with it?

3). You are trying to draw a particular pose, but can't figure out how to do it right and you are hoping to find a swordfight scene with people in the same pose as what you're looking for?

Not really any of those.

I've pretty much lost my confidence in it. I have the entire scene scripted so I basically know what happens, but I'm not confident that I can draw it coherently. It may be difficult to tell exactly what's going on.

As far as facial expressions go, that's another issue. It was suggested that the modern-day Honen shouldn't look so scared because he wouldn't, in reality, be able to fight like that (although he's not exactly winning).

It's hard for me to figure how how he should look then. He's not angry, so anger would seem inappropriate. He's obviously not happy, so he's not going to be fighting with a devious expression, either. That only really leaves me with a blank stare, but I don't feel that's appropriate either since I think that he really is worried about this situation, and Honen's ability to contain his emotions is not his strong point.

One thing I suggested if that you could try drawing a little bit, even if only to doodle, every day.

I thought the way he looked was just fine, but if you are seriously worried about that, then maybe you could tone down his expression a bit, while still making the worry evident in his face somehow. You're better at it than I, so it's up to you to figure it out.

It may be difficult to tell exactly what's going on.

I hope you're not saying that because of the comment I made about that one panel, because I was really just joking. I know that it's unfinished and will be easier to see what's really happening when it's done. I'm not retarded.

Don't try too hard. I'd hate to see you give it all up just because one little swordfight scene may not look exactly the way you would've hoped.

uses of my amazing
BIONIC ARM!

You could try drawing loose, sketchy gestural swordfighting poses, just to get a feel for the basic flow of things. And not necessarily the exact poses you want for the two Honens fighting, just a page or two of swordfighting stick figures. And hey, you might lay out some scenes you didn't intend to make, but end up liking anyway. Of course, don't draw those and call it a day, but try building from them afterwards.

No it wasn't that. It's too complicated for me to explain.

Hopefully after tonight I'll be able to get myself back into a daily routine of drawing. It seemed like for awhile there whenever I planned to do some drawing, something would come up. Either a health problem, or a sudden "family" event, or I'd find it impossible to find time to both draw and spend time with Crawl.

Yeah. No matter what you can say about the lightsaber battle in the original Star Wars, that was still so much worse.

I found all of Epi 3's lightsaber fights weak. I guess Anakin vs. Obi-wan's not so bad, but it's hard to take seriously with all that silly dialogue. The rest stink and have absolutely no tension.

My favorite was Maul vs. Obi-wan and Qui-gon in Episode 1. Or maybe Luke vs. Vader right before the "I am your father" line.

The dialogue did its fair share of killing the Palpatine/Windu scene, too.

Like, what crime did Palpatine commit? It'd be sort of like if someone in our country was elected to office and he turned out to be a Nazi. While the voters probably wouldn't be happy, there's no crime.

When Palpatine kills Windu, he says, "UNLIMITED POWER!" for no reason (except maybe for the benefit of the kindergarteners in the audience).

And afterwards, Anakin says, "What have I done?" Can't Lucas write dialogue without having to look through the cliche dictionary?

i dunno about sword fighters or people who fence, but martial artist usually don't show any emotion or intent so his/her opponent can't guess what he's gonna do next.
