Did Ebert finally lose it or what? |

Well, I've been saying that he has for some time.

I think it's interesting that the "New Reviews" section is empty. Maybe they didn't want to have all those 4-star ratings right on top of one
another in one little section, but it's probably just a glitch.

Stephen King once called out movie reviewers for giving too many four star ratings. He said the reviewer should ask himself before giving four stars, "Is
this movie really as good as The Godfather?"
Ebert's response was, "If I applied that standard to giving out four stars, then it might be months or years between when I could give that score." Yes, that's exactly the point! If you really like a movie, but it's not up to that standard, there's another score, called 3 1/2 stars, that could be used. Another solution would be to use 5 stars, which is what I like. That puts more room between the "good" and "classic" scores. |

For comparison with another reviewer, Berardinelli gave four stars to...
-ZERO moves so far this year -2 movies in 2006 -1 movie in 2005 -1 movie in 2004 -5 movies in 2003 -2 movies in 2002 -4 movies in 2001 -2 movies in 2000 |

You'll also notice that they got rid of the "Ebert Recommends" panel, and replaced it with "Now Playing".

What's great is you can now ask, "I wonder how many four star reviews Ebert wrote this week?"
This week it was two, but I don't think it's been zero since his health improved. Berardinelli, on the other hand, has 10 days left in the year, and still no four star score awarded. |

Ebert mentioned this:
It was a time of wonders, an autumn of miracles, one of the best years in recent movie history. One great film after another opened, and movie lovers found there were two or three, sometimes more, must-see films opening on a weekend. I gave up rationing my four-star ratings and went with the flow. It's like the videogame reviewers' excuse for giving that so many high scores: There REALLY ARE that many great games! I haven't seen many movies Ebert gave 4 stars to this year, but I did at least see Casino Royale and Ratatouille, and both were FAR from being 4 star movies. The movie that's on his list for being the second best of the year, No Country For Old Men, doesn't even sound that good. The villain does a coin flip to decide if someone lives or dies? Yeah, ripping off Two Face from Batman is gonna lead to high art. I read the story summary and it doesn't sound like much, and complaints (such as an article at Slate, and Beckerfilms) are more convincing than the argument that it's a four star movie. Does it seem like other credible people think this is some unusually great year for movies? I really don't think so. It seems like most people think that movies are sucking. This is why I've been refering to Berardinelli's lack of four star reviews to present another side. |

[T]he [Oscar] winner was that piece of crap, "No Country for Old Men, the story of a guy with a bad haircut chasing a guy with a mustache for 140 minutes, that leads to no ending at all.Reading positive reviews of that movie leaves me with a feeling of "What's the point?" Ebert's goes on and on about how perfect it is, but I didn't pick up on anything tangible. I imagine the acting and directing might be good, but what good does that do when it's in the service of a story that's not that good? Then there's a part where a guy steals drug money and returns to the scene later (to give a dying stranger some water!), which is how he's hunted down. Even when I read the spoiler, that scene seemed completely implausible to me. I don't think I ever want to pay to see that movie. It just sounds dumb. |

If it was just a fluke movie he happened to like and the rest of his scores seemed rational it would be one thing. But as things are, I think it's so funny
that Ebert gave The Happening 3 stars.

Well, he wasn't the only critic that liked it and he didn't give it four stars or even 3-1/2. His review could probably have lived without those lines
that suggest the only reason people wouldn't like it is because there's not enough action in it, though.
It might also be worth noting that the two critics I read the most often, James Berardinelli and Qwipster, both gave it negative reviews.

The "top critics" rating at Rottentomatoes is 10% for that movie. For comparison, Catwoman got an 11% top critic rating.
