I'm finally nearing the end of Trials and Tribulations and it took a twist that I wasn't expecting. I feel like it was kind of staring me in the face
the whole time, though. Despite everything, I'm probably still going to be playing Apollo Justice when it's released, I'm just too curious about
it.

I finally started Panzer Dragoon Saga. I'm to the desert.
Man, it takes what, half an hour to finally get to the game? After that, though, it's fairly decent. I also neglected to mention until now that I rented Ratatouille a couple nights ago. Eh. |

Well, I finished Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations. One thing I can say is that the ending was really well done. I almost wonder if that's part of
the reason people are so fond of the game. When it ends on such a high note, it's easier to overlook it's flaws. I hope to expand on this later, but I
do feel that it's the weakest of the trilogy. The villains are not that interesting, the cases aren't varied enough, and it just seemed to be missing
that special something.
It still kinda bugs me that everyone is so happy in the end and now I have to see Phoenix Wright the bum in the next game.

And now I guess I'm going to start Tales of the Abyss, I'm more optimistic about it than any of the other choices I've got right now. I'm going
to replay the first 30 minutes or an hour because I don't remember it that well from last time.
--- But man, I just replayed to where I left off and I'm again finding it hard to get into.

The first hour really sucks and is boring as smeg. Why do you try sticking with it though? :/

I played a little more Breath of Fire. I took control of Ryu, had the birdmen fly him to the wizard's tower, and beat the wizard (easily). I also got the
[boome]Rang.
After that, Nina joined my party, and I visited the two towns on opposite ends of the dried river. I also gave the Iron Ore (which I don't remember where or how I got...) to a smith, who made me a saw. That let me enter a forest. And that, I presume, is where my next quest lies. |

I finished the first disc of PDS.
I forgot to mention, I named the dragon Angelus, after the one from Drakengard. |

So I'm playing Rez (it just came out on Xbox Arcade) and I'm thinking, "Is this it"?
My expectations weren't that high to begin with, but I know this is one of those games that people call art, say it's an experience like none other, all that crap. To me, it's a Panzer Dragoon ripoff (the lock on scheme, overall feel) with a more unusual visual scheme. And a weak musical element where your attacking or whatever adds sounds to the song. And of course, easier and more repetitive than a real Panzer Dragoon game (a series I don't even like to start with). If you aren't familiar with Rez, this is Rez, and this is all that Rez is, the various parts of the game are virtually indistinguishable from one another. The video even makes it look more interesting than it really is. Did I mention I've been playing for less than an hour and I'm already at the fourth area out of five? Not that I've 100 percented them, but still.

Some people at another forum I go to were ripping on a 1UP review of Rez because they gave it a 10 for being art and only devoted one sentence in the review to
the game mechanics. I read the review and they were right - CB007's post says more about the actual game than that entire review did. I didn't know
from their review that it was like Panzer Dragoon.
I'm not really fond of the whole "lock on and shoot" style of gameplay. The only reason the original Panzer Dragoon used it is because of the way the game uses fixed camera angles to swivel around and show you a particular view. I mean you couldn't possibly shoot at things to your side when the camera is giving you a side view. Well, that, and I think it would be difficult to tell what the heck you can destroy in some situations. Airforce Delta Strike, for obvious reasons, uses lock-on, but it worked better in that game.

I think Rez came with a vibrater / dildo type thing in Japan. I'm not kidding, either.

The really bad thing about Rez reviews like that is that they cut off the possibility of actually discussing games as art. See, I think that when something is
done really well, and it has heart put into it, then it's art. If it's a videogame, then the videogame is art.
But I don't think that "pretentious" videogames that try to be art by not being videogames are art. |

romancing saga 3:
failed to kill forneus.found out that he's actually an abyss gate guardian AKA one of the devil lords who used to rule the world. strangely, i didn't die and got teleported back the submarine/ship/city vanguard. checked the faq and it recommended HP of at least 400 when i start the quest for forneous and end up with about 700HP when i face him. i fought him when i was on average 360HP. way ahead of myself. completed the dragon machine quest. crappy reward for that. killed the water dragon to to save the lobstermen. won the zweig tournament. failed to get the grail from the vampire. now i'm at around 600HP. gonna try beating forneous again. hate this. still haven't trained up herman much. he dies too easily without his youth. won't be recruiting the lobster until i can kick out the poet. wonder if i should just keep the poet... but i really prefer a more well-rounded team. poet's intel of 13 is too low for my taste. no way i could have made kat a decent magic warrior with her crappy intel. same thing with monica and mikhail. all the royalty are stupid? mechwarrior 4: mercs: yay. i beat the grand championship on recruit difficulty with a heavy-class blackknight mec. config: a mix of medium pulse lasers, flame throwers, and close-range streak missiles. i just avoided every one until they're a bit wore out, then i used hit-jump-and-run tactics. almost got whacked by that vulture mec with 2 cluster missiles, which can't be detected by my anti-missile system. i think it was piloted by a supposed kuritan named fen cheng. i'll remember that name in higher difficulties. |

i'm sure this is less depressing than a hobo lawyer. That game actually had my attention for a while before it was released. I might still play it someday, but it sounds like they didn't really put as much work into it as they needed to. It's supposed to be short and very easy, the investigation segments aren't voiced, and they couldn't get Stephen Colbert back for voice work. |

More PDS.
Oh My God, what were they doing do Edge on the flagship?! I'm probably gonna have nightmares about that scream. Then I went through a pretty water area with ruins. Although it started to wear out its welcome as I flew around for ten or twenty minutes trying to find the Protect Key. Then it turned really red, and while it still looked nice it started to give me a headache. Then beat the Guardians. |

FO was playing the SNES Lion King to take screenshots, and I can't get over how gorgeous it looks. The animation is about Donkey Kong Country-caliber, but
hand-drawn. The art work is solid. Some character deaths could be from Looney Toons. The scenery is interesting, like the elephant's graveyard.
There's varied color schemes. The title screen is of a sunrise, and it just plain looks beautiful.
I didn't like the movie, and there is one negative for the game's graphics: Simba looks like a snot-nosed arrogant brat. You just want to smack him. I guess I'd have to finish the game myself to see if it impressed me all the way to the end. I wasn't quite as impressed with Kirby's Adventure graphics when I played the game as when I saw FO play it -- it seemed a little one-dimension when I experienced more of it. But right now, it seems like The Lion King has everything going for it that games for years have not. Anyway, I played a little more Breath of Fire. I went into the forest, and met the fake town leader, and beat his two-headed pet. Bo joined. That part of the story was a little confusing to me. I felt like I went into the forest for purely gameplay reasons -- that's the only place left to go, and I haven't beaten the game yet, so I went there. FO said, well, the fake town leader, when he was back at the town, probably said something about how I needed to go there. He wanted to trick me to capture me. And it's really easy to miss a plot point when only one character says it. As a contrary example, there's no way you could miss the river being dried up -- everyone mentions it and you can see it for yourself. Also, the fake king's plan wasn't good -- obviously, by trying to capture us, we just beat him and rescued his other captives. After that, I went back to Romero. Someone told me to go southwest to get purifying water for the zombies. So I did that and ... opps. When I got there, I couldn't take the water with me. Someone *had* told me that, "A couple used to sell water jugs." But I hadn't gotten that. I did get the water jug before going to bed last night, so that's where I saved. After you get it, I guess it makes sense that the clue was phrased so strangely -- The couple *used* to sell water jugs, but now they're old, and one is a zombie. Still, I don't think anyone would actually talk that way. Maybe I should tread lightly here, though, since any number of NES RPGs had bad grammar. |

Flying Omelette |

Yeah, some things are awkwardly-phrased in that game. There's a line much, MUCH later that's something about a hero falling and I didn't understand
what the hell that meant for the longest time.
Still, the translation isn't anywhere near as bad as Breath of Fire 2's. It almost seems like Woolsey did that on purpose in BoF to make the clues a little more "game-ish" and not so obvious.

Crawl and 1OOO |

There were other bits of dialogue that seem as though the character's speaking them know they're talking about a videogame. Like, one guys says,
"If Bo is at the front of your party, you will have an easy time getting through the forests." The weird thing about that is, he says that even
before Bo joins your party.
Anyway, I got the purifying water, and went to Agua, a floating tower. I beat the boss there, a ghost guarding a key. It didn't take much damage from my attacks, but I was able to easily keep up with healing the damage he dealt. I must have to return to that area later. There were other things I wasn't able to do there. For one thing, there was a weak spot in a wall that was blocking treasure chests I couldn't reach. And there were a bunch of locked doors. The locked doors mostly did not prevent me from reaching anything -- they just would have been short-cuts if they were unlocked. I thought they might have unlocked on the way back down, but nope. So, maybe they'll unlock on another trip. |

I went back to the giant robot. That time, there was a General trying to guard the heart, but I beat him easily. Then I activated the giant, who walked to
the dam and destroyed it, so the river can flow again. After that, I went to the drained lake, and got the ring.
It's really easy to annoy FO with this game. If I ever don't do things exactly the way she thinks I should, she gets mad. Like, after I went through the robot, I went back to get some treasure chests, and she was like, "You're not supposed to go THERE! [implying I'm supposed to go to the drained lake instead]" |
|||||
Flying Omelette |

I don't get mad, but sometimes you play games like you haven't a clue what you're doing.
|
|||||
Crawl and 1OOO |
|||||
|
I do that because it amuses me, and it for some reason makes you seem like you're about to burst.
Like, I'll read aloud, "'A couple used to sell water jugs.' [This is an obvious game clue] Well, that must be meaningless dialogue!" Then FO can barely contain herself from blurting out exactly what that means, where you use it, what comes next, etc. |

After going through the robot and returning to town, the two towns celebrated a wedding. Everyone from the human town was gone, because the wedding was at the
kobold town. While we were there, the general took control of the robot, rode it to the human town, and destroyed it. Then we re-entered the robot.
When we confronted the general, he turned into the Gremlin boss! FO said that that was one of the hardest bosses in the game. She also said that it was good of me to have beaten it on my first try. Probably the most notable thing about that boss was that it had an attack that was pretty strong that hit all three party members. It was the biggest problem for Bo, for some reason. Maybe his armor wasn't as good. Sometimes, I'd need to have Bo use a Cure rather than an Herb. The other notable thing about the boss was that its "second wind" lasted a long time. This is subjective, but it might have seemed to have lasted as long as its original life meter! Also, I think it's possible that during its second wind, it just did that powerful attack on every round. During its original life meter, it would do several normal attacks against a single target for every powerful attack. I just played with some caution, making sure to heal when needed, and I didn't shy from having two characters heal in one round if that's what I needed. Towards the end of the fight, I'd have all three characters heal in one round, then have all three attack, then all three heal. After beating the robot, there's a cinema scene which may supposed to be poignant. And then I fought a dragon boss in a dragon palace. It was easier than the Gremlin. And beating it got me my first dragon powers! |

I read a third TenNapel graphic novel, Creature Tech. Out of the three I've read so far, that was probably the best. It was interesting, probably funnier
than the other two combined, and the ending was rewarding (unlike Jacobus' which was almost insulting).
