Certainly not the best way of playing N64 games. It's hell without a proper controller (I only have a PC controller right now that's similar to a Super
NES controller, no analog sticks, not really enough buttons), and some games lag, (although maybe I just need to fiddle with the settings and/or close some
other programs running in the background of my PC), but damn it's great for taking screenshots:

Well, there are at least two options for that. There are dual shock style dual analogue controllers, similar to what we have. And it's also possible to
use Xbox 360 controllers with a PC, I think.
The dual shock approach would probably be cheaper. Who knows which you'd be more comfortable with. "My feelings hurt, but you know I overcome the pain

The 360 controller would work fine. I think I needed to download a driver from Microsoft for it but that was quick. However, the d-pad is pretty much complete
shit so if there are any games which might need regular use of it, that should be kept in mind. My cat ate both of my wired 360 controllers. I've been
debating whether to buy an adapter to use the wireless one I have or buy a regular PC gamepad.

Those Goldeneye screenshots are awesome. I'll bet N64 games will look more colorful on a PC monitor.

Well, you can't really make a game that's comprised of mostly grey and brown have more colors than grey and brown, but yes, just like with NES and SNES
emulators, the graphics are brighter. That's exactly what I was getting at - screenshots will look much nicer and cleaner than they would from my capture
card.

brighter? the bsnes emulator i'm using for der langrisser has the option to make the graphics look almost exactly like a tv set(choose from NTSC or PAL
colour codes).

Out of curiosity, why bsnes? Does that game not work on ZSNES or SNES9x? Everything I just read about bsnes says that it focuses on accuracy over speed and
compatibility and requires a pretty beefy computer to run properly (they recommended dual core processor).

I don't. For one thing, I think the capture card images actually look worse than normal. Mystical Ninja is not
that blurry on my TV. I think even Crawl felt that way at one time, but he eventually replaced all (or most) of the capture card images for his great games
feature with emulator screens.

It's not a completely fair comparison. That old Mystical Ninja screenshot was shrunk from its captured resolution, which is partially why it looks so
blurry.

Well, not exactly. That was the default resolution of the capture card software on the Dell. Actually, the emulator screenshots were reduced in size by half. Maybe later I'll take comparative screenshots of Indiana Jones or Super Mario 64.

No. The capture card software had the option to save screenshots at any resolution. It was set to 320 by 240, I think,
because that's a TV's resolution. However, that was NOT the resolution the pictures were taken in (they were larger than that even from a TV because
they had a black border around them, and the capture card could work with different resolutions), so they had to be shrunk to get them that size.
Here are my original screenshots from R-Type:
You can see they're about the same size as that Mystical Ninja capture card screenshot up there. After I figured out what I am telling you now, I took them again and saved them at the native resolution:
I think the second pair of pictures looks clearly better. Our new capture card software has its own problems, but that's a different issue.

CLOUDBOND007 wrote: I just wanted to note that even though you are correct about the XBox 360's gamepad being complete garbage, that's not the only problem one would experience if they used it as a PC gamepad. Microsoft's driver software interface is quite austere, and doesn't even let you set axis dead zones. This means when you're using it with a program that doesn't let you choose the dead zones, if the axis is off-center by the ever-so-slightest bit, the program will consider it to be pressed in that direction. The springs don't completely center the joysticks, so you might let go, and the character will still tip-toe or turn in a direction, slightly. There is a freeware independently created program, called XBCD, which remedies this, and other problems, but I haven't been able to get it to work. |

I didn't realize it was taking them in one resolution and saving in another, although I'm not sure of the distinction. When it would take a capture it
would go into a "holding tray" (my EzPhoto Scanner software from my old Acer used similar holding tray), and then you'd have to select the
captures you wanted to save in the holding tray by clicking on them and then typing a file name. But you could also preview captures by double-clicking on them
and I'm positive that's the resolution they'd come up in, so that's why I don't get the distinction. I know it could save them at higher
resolutions, but I didn't figure out how to change that setting until later.

I don't remember having that problem on any of the games I used it for.

I agree with Pero on the Goldeneye screenshots. That game does have some good graphics - amazing level of detail. Almost makes me want to play through it
again.

about bsnes:
i posted some stuff about it and "der langrisser" in the progress topic(s). basically, der langrisser was a very buggy game. after they hacked it, translated it to english, and debugged it too, it still had non-critical bugs i noticed while playing the game. only accurate emulators like bsnes can play the der langrisser rom without it hanging on you or lagging very badly. i would suggest playing star ocean 1 on bsnes too, as the emulated sound in that game seems to make SNES9X hang some of the time. the only things i hate about bsnes is that it hardly has any extra features, i can't save anywhere i like and have to use the in-game save system(if any), and the animation doesn't seem as smooth(maybe my 3GHz P4 isn't good enough for it) as in SNES9x. there's one more less annoying thing about it. i can't play any game really fast with it so i can skip the boring parts, like certain random RPG battles. i would try that other accurator emulator they recommended for der but it was a bigger download and it seems to be in japanese only.
