Best Year For Games Ever |

In my opinion, the best year for games ever was 1990. Off the top of my head, I can name Super Mario Bros. 3, Castlevania III, Crystalis and Final Fantasy as being released in the United States in 1990. I don't think I can name off the top of my head four other excellent to masterpiece level games that were released in the same year (The latest EGM had an article about "30 must-play games this fall!" I don't believe that any year - let alone season - had 30 must play games). And bear in mind, this is without trying very hard (looking to see what else was released in 1990).

I can't pick a single year. >< My favorite years of gaming was 1994-1996. It was the wonderous age of the SNES and Genesis. And it was the time when I discovered FF6 and was then exposed to the wonderful world of RPGs.
Don't get me wrong, I did grow up with the NES and have adored it very much, but the SNES made a stronger impression on me. [ fantasyanime.com ] RPGs & anime

EGM is the biggest pack of video gaming numbskulls on the planet. 30 must play games? Yeah, I bet those 30 are spread out among the top three consoles: Cube, PS2, and X-Box. Who has the money to own all three systems and buy all the games for them? Get real.

I think Maniac Mansion also came out in 1990.

I tell people 1990 is the scientifically proven peak of video games (as far as American releases are concerned... Final Fantasy was out in 1987 in Japan). I also tell them that we won't ever see a better year. Also coming out in 1990 were Dr. Mario, Mega Man 3, Super C, Rescue Rangers, among others, and that's just for the NES alone...

It was a good year for Game Boy too. Both Final Fantasy Legend 2 and 3 came out in 1990.

Some guys at VGF say Final Fantasy Legends 2 and 3 are some of the worst games they've ever played.

Final Fantasy Legend 2 isn't my favorite game in the world, but I thought it was okay. If I had to pick one year that was the best for videogames, 1990 would most likely be it, but I think the general era from about 1987-1990 was the best.

I LOVE FO! | ||||

I don't know who that person is (some people just don't like old school RPGs, but maybe this person had a more specific gripe about those games in particular)... but I thought FFL3 was okay. My problem with it was that I once abandoned the game for a little bit (I was mostly playing it as an "on the go" game), and when I came back to it, I totally forgot where I left off and what I had to do. (The townspeople's dialogue doesn't change as you progress, which I suppose can be counted against the game)
If I don't make a bigger effort to salvage my game (I was really far into), someday I'll have to start FFL3 over again. I guess when that happens, I may have something to say about how replayable the game is. |

From what the original Game Boy is capable of, Final Fantasy Legend 2 & 3 are masterpieces. I agree with Crawl, that guy who thinks they suck most likely doesn't care for old-school-style-RPGs in general. The admin of a Seiken Densetsu forum I went to once said FF Adventure is a terrible game with bad graphics.
Bahh, people like that say Mac's are bad and they haven't even tried them. Is it so hard to just say something like "I dont care for games like that" instead of spreading around such a negative opinion with no valid experience to back it up.[ fantasyanime.com ] RPGs & anime

The only problem I have with the FFL games is that if you're not playing them right, you can get very far in the game and screw up. When I played FFL2, I didn't realize that you had to fight with certain weapons to increase your speed, and I got near the end of the game and the enemies would all go first in battle and wipe us out. I had to backtrack and do a lot of stat-building with weaker weapons to get to a point where I had a chance.
I agree with the era from about late 1987 on up until early 1991 being the overall best for games. Back then, the quality of graphics had reached a pique, and game developers had to rely on interesting and great game design to outgun each other. Although a lot of great games were made in the 16-bit era and on up, it seems that when the 16-bit era was ushered in, that's when the focus started going to graphics and gore over gameplay. Where can I find...a bagel? |

What I didn't like about the 16 bit era is that is when the market was flooded with those darn one on one fighters. They came in droves. I was about ready to buy them all just to burn em.
Other than that, the 16 bit era was a golden age in many aspects. Some of the best RPGs are on the SNES. |

1989-1990 sounds about right to me, but I didn't think things really started getting bad until the beginning of the N64/Playstation era.

hmmm.. when was "dragonball z 2" for the famicom released?
otherwise, i would say the mid-90s or late-90s when graphic adventure games were at their peak. grim fandango, beneath a steel sky, 11 hour... king's quest? they started using some decent voice-acting in the games in that era. and yeah.. myst. but i never played myst 'cause it sounded too much like a damn slideshow. |
