Obscure NES game, please help!

Hi! I stumbled over here, hoping someone could help me find an old NES game, with very little information to go on. Any leads are appreciated.

All I remember is this game featured a castle, with lightning behind it, that was impossible for me to figure out how to get inside -- I played it as a little kid. I see the castle (in my head) towering above the character, played "mario-style" with the character just walking in a straight line forward. I would get to this castle after *very* short game play, and never figured out what to do next. I'd love to try now!

If anyone can even come up with some castle-like titles, I can go search them and see if I can find a screen shot. I know it's not castlevania, but that's about it. In my bad bad memory, I seem to mix it up with Fester's Quest all the time --so it may be similar.

I think it might be The Addams Family NES game. I just played a ROM of it. It begins with Gomez entering the gates to the mansion. The mansion has lightning flashing behind it. Then, after you begin play, you walk to the right a bit and come across the mansion, but there didn't appear to be any way to get inside...at least not from there. The game did drop a hint about an entrance from a crypt. And that would explain the Fester's Quest mix-up, too, since they're both Addams Family games.

And the game is very much in the Mario style - Gomez jumps on enemies' heads to defeat them.

Darn! It's not any of those three. The Addam's Family game was the closest, as far as game play, but too cheerful. This game was probably a little darker, or more serious.

I loved that Castlelian game, though! I musta missed that one as a kid. Very cute.

Any more ideas?

I'd just be taking wild guesses, now, but could it be Sword Master or Castle of Dragon?

Is there anything else at all that you remember about it?

sounds like Milon's Secret Castle- theres lightning behind a castle on the cover, & i myself could never get into the stupid castle at the beginning when i played it. the guy in the game was kind of like mario gameplay.

...i believe it was me here about a month ago in this same situation looking for a game, & it turned out that the game was Castelian. Castelian rules!!

I have no idea, but to enter the mansion in the Addams Family you have to get the key first which is an a crypt.

Awesome, I'll check out all the ones that were mentioned. Unfortunately, no, I can't remember any more details. I spoke with my brother, and he said the cartridge and the opening sequence of the game had a black castle with a dark blue sky background, with lightning. He also said there were red running shoes involved, but I really think he's mixed up with Bubble Bobble. He's about five years younger than me, so his memory of it is even worse.

He said the game play is sorta like Mario, but also that the character would go up and down in the world, not just forward. That's all I've got though! I'll see about the other ones mentioned.

All I did to get into the castle in Milon's Secret Castle was stand in front of the doors and push Up. =/

Getting into the castle wasn't so bad...it's figuring out what to do once you're inside that's the real headache. (Literally, since you have to bump Milon's head into blocks everywhere to locate secret items and doorways.)

Haha, no, I guess it's not "darker and more serious" than the Addam's Family. You know how memory can play tricks on you! Milon's has got to be one of the silliest games I've ever played, but it became so important in my head (and for my brother, same thing).

And obviously, yeah, it was easy enough to get into the doors on the first level, my memory of it was pretty bad. It was the second level of doors I was never able to get into as a kid.

I skimmed through this thread and saw someone mentioned Legacy of the Wizard! Have ANY of you ever beat that game, without using codes or cheats? I think thats one of the hardest games ever made, but thats just me.

At the very beginning of a game called Shadowgate for nes, there is a castle, and it is difficult to get into i imagine if you are young. But the gameplay does not strike me as MArio Similar, but that could always be the game too, you never know when you are going off old memories. That is a great game, people should check it out.

Yeah FO, that game is really good, but getting started was rough, it is hard to find out what to do at first, until you familliarize yourself with the game play. I hear their are sequels to that game.

There are. Beyond Shadowgate, which was made for the Turbo Grafx 16 and Shadowgate 64. I've never played Beyond Shadowgate, but I have Shadowgate 64. Unfortunately, I didn't think it was as good as the original, though it had some decent parts.

Uninvited and Deja Vu aren't true sequels, but they're similar-style games, also made by ICOM and ported to the NES by Kemco-Seika. Maniac Mansion is a similar game, too, and, imo, the best of those types of games I've played so far because it actually has replay value.

Yeah Maniac Mansion is a great game, but what is imo? I have never heard of that i do not think, unless i am an idiot here, and that is some well known abbreviation.

Yeah, Maniac Mansion is great. I beat it with about half of the possible character parties. I never used Jeff. LOL! I didn't think he was very useful since his only talent is to fix the phone.

Shadowgate and Uninvited are probably the two best text adventures for the NES. From what I've played of Deja Vu (the second in the series - not a sequel, but another text adventure), I wasn't too impressed by it. It just didn't pull me in like the other two did.

Another game with a similar style is the NES game 'Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom'. Although I haven't played this game yet, I've heard it's a good (and somehow) strange game, but what do you expect with such as title?

I had the same thoughts on Deja Vu. I think part of the problem is that it's so damn ugly.

What about the Sword of Hope games for the Game Boy? I've never heard anyone talk about them anywhere, but they are supposed to be similar to Shadowgate.
