I see arguments like this all the time, so it's gotten to the point where if I see someone say a game is repetitive, I take it with a grain of salt. As long as a game is a variation on a theme, that's fine. i.e., you're doing the same thing but the challenge increases as you go.
For instance, I don't consider games like Punchout to be repetitive. Sure, you have the same set of moves throughout the game, but you must use them differently as the game progresses. Now, if you had to fight Glass Joe 17 times in a row, THAT would be repetitive.
It's funny that the games that people consider to be the deepest are RPGs, yet out of every game I've played, if I were to pull out all the games that I thought were repetitve in a bad way (which wouldn't be many, BTW), most of them would probably be RPGs. Chrono Cross was repetitive. I used the exact same strategy for about 90% of battles. It was like fighting Glass Joe 300 times, with a Soda Popinski thrown in once or twice for good measure.
"But Facilitypro, Chrono Cross had a wonderful story! That alone makes up for the repetitive battles!"
Kiss my ass. Yeah. Like I really enjoyed watching that guy try to play his song 10 times in a row, or watching some bucktooth dude do 4 magic tricks in a row before he got to the point.
"But it has 40 Characters!"
And they're all cut from the same cloth. Besides, all that mattered was their color.
From what I've heard Crawl say about Lunar, it is repetitive. (I've also heard counters to his arguments, but they seemed like hotheaded replies instead of well thought out rebuttals.)
I suppose Beat 'em ups can repetitive in a bad way, but I hardly ever play them.
BTW, I did think Silent Hill 2 was sort of repetitive in a bad way. Lots of running down roads for minutes on end, that stupid boat rowing part (if you take a wrong turn, you could just go on forever), TONS of checking doors, etc. The first SH had much better puzzles, IMO. Most of the ones in SH 2 just involved finding something, which the ones in SH actually required some riddle solving ability. Anyway, I'm off topic now.
Later.
