I did notice that the Wii will be having a Metal Slug collection.

...but I think I already have all of those games.

That line up is so incredibly lame that it's hard to even find an original criticism for it. I guess I have two specific issues, though.

#1 - WHY have such a limited lineup? I can imagine various reasons (testing the waters, not wanting to initially overwhelm consumers, needing to work further on the emulators for more complicated games), but none really make that much sense. Even if there was some legitimate reason for this, they could have at least had a better limited line up, especially on the NES and SNES. As has been alluded to, Urban Champion and NES Donkey Kong hardly set the world on fire on the e-reader or the NES Classics series.

And what market is Nintendo aiming for here? They're competing with at least two things:

1) Emulators and ROMs, which can offer MANY more games. Maybe Nintendo will start cracking down harder on ROM sites (like they do for GBA roms now); who knows. But even if ROMs become harder to get, that still doesn't change the fact that it seems like Nintendo can't do for a service what amatures were able to do for free.

2) Actual cartridges, which are cheap for people who don't own them, and which might be readily available for people with collections.

It seems like the available audience is a niche: People who care enough about old games to want to play them, and maybe pay a couple of bucks for them, but who do NOT care enough about old games to really get the original systems, or to have held on them to begin with.


#2 - Even in the future, what can we expect from this?

Personally, I'm expecting something like the the NES Classics series, where Nintendo shoots itself in the foot in various ways, the thing isn't a success, and Nintendo cancels it an thus NEVER has certain games you might want available.

Even in the best case scenario, maybe this thing would be popular, and they would eventually release all their popular hits: Maybe SMB3 for the NES, DKC2 and Yoshi's Island and maybe some Square RPGs for the SNES, Zelda 64 and GoldenEye for the N64, etc.

Even then, what about games that might be good or great, but never became megahits, like Castlevania 3?

And it would seem like even less common games, like Overhorizon, or Little Samson, or things that would need to be translated because they never got an official US release, would be even less likely to come out.

If you want any particular games, it seems like you shouldn't hold your breath.

I still don't understand how the hell Final Fantasy 7's price could have gone up. I mean, there's,what, maybe 7 million copies of the game around? So, how could it become rare? Unless the kids really are snapping their CDs into bits. (I notice many ebay auctions are for Disk 1 only, or Disks 2 and 3 only) Or unless everyone really does love that game so much that millions of people can't part with it.



And Advent Children wasn't even a wide release movie, but seems to have only been made to appeal to people who were already FF7 fans, so how could that interest a huge number of new people?




I do think the Metal Slug collection is the more interesting initial older game release for the Wii. In that case, people who already own all 5 games in some form or another will be the niche. And there must be more people who'd be willing to pay for a set of 5 (or 5 1/2, if both Metal Slug 2 and X is on there) older 2D arcade games than were willing to pay for 1 or 2 on their own.

The ESRB wasn't around in the NES Era.

Actually, there's a bit of trivia. Wario's Woods (also the last official NES game in America) was the only one to get an ESRB rating. And that was back when they used "K-A" (kids to adults), which of course is the rating that it got.
