Myth: You shouldn't try to become a ______ because you'll get upset when you're met with rejection.

Reality: The implication of this myth is that if you just get a normal job, you'll be magically surrounded by people who will always be nice to you and you'll live happily ever after.

Myth: You can't go to college because you can't do _____ or because ____ is too hard for you.

Reality: If you get a "normal" job, chances are whatever you're doing will be a lot harder than anything in college.

Myth: Parents love their children.

Reality: Parents actually don't give a shit about their kids. This is why nobody should ever have kids. Unless maybe if they're rich. And that's a huge maybe.

Myth: The School Bully is a fat kid that has a bad home life.

Reality: I have never seen any evidence of this existing in real life. It's a way to shrug off the responsibility. "My kid can't possibly be a bully because he's not fat and doesn't have a bad home life". Everybody in school is an asshole and everyone knows it. Plus, all parents hate their kids anyway.

Thank you for confirming I'm not the only person in the world who's noticed this. Another reason this myth is perpetuated is so that no one has to actually do anything about it. "Just remember that when you're being bullied, the bully actually has it worse than you." Of course it makes no sense to you if the bullies obviously don't fit that description.

I think the more appropriate term for the bully thing is "Stereotype" rather than "Myth."

The most notorious bully in my high school was a short, skinny stoner kid. I don't know how he managed to intimidate so many people, but I think he could sense vulnerability a mile away, and he capitalized on it. I think what he did was give a little "test" jibe and see how a person reacted. If that person seemed intimidated, he would focus on them.

One of his favorite victims (a chubby, nerdy kid) eventually beat the living shit out of him.

85% of video games are above the median in quality.

Yeah, I guess that would be appropriate. It always seemed wrong to me because in my school it was the fat kids that got picked on, not did the bullying. It's not always students that get failing grades that do it.

The fat kid getting bullied is probably another stereotype. But I don't think being fat has much to do with having a good or bad home life.

I agree that if someone's a bully, it doesn't necessarily mean that that person has a bad home life, but I'd say it's true often enough to understand why someone would come to that conclusion.

While we're on the subject of bullying, I might as well mention another such myth that has always pissed me off. (Based on what she said, I'm guessing it has been pissing off Flying Omelette, too.) That myth is, "Just ignore them, then they'll stop bullying you."

This is complete bullshit. The worst part of the myth is that it actually manages to shift some of the blame to the victim of the crime. Seriously, if whoever was the first to come up with that myth and spread it isn't currently lying face down in a shallow grave, we can all rest assured that there is no God.

If it doesn't show up, or enough people just don't want to register, I can post the full article, later.

Some people have been criticizing the article as being poorly written, and sense we're not getting the whole story, and I get that feeling, too. The part that said that Billy had been exchanging shoves and insults with the boy several days before the latter punched him at the bus stop piqued my interest. It suggested that he may have provoked at least some of the fights he got into. And what's with the repeated, "Heh-heh"s?

Anyway, if the article is accurate, and isn't leaving out any important details that would render it very one-sided, it's pretty sickening, especially the part where the school official says Billy "got what he deserved." The MSNBC story doesn't have any such information not mentioned in the NYT article.
