I saw that last night. I didn't think the level design really looked bad or anything (looks better than Super Mario World, at least) but I didn't like how you can apparently skip about half of it with that pipe cannon.

I'm actually kind of encouraged by the video. I thought that even though it was going to be a 2D game, it would probably not play so similarly to SMB3 and SMW. The visuals will probably look much, much better on the actual system, too.
As far as level design, it could be an early level. I think I'm going to play a Mario game right now. |

Quote: That was the main thing that bugged me as well. In other videos I've seen, it seems you recieve a power up which turns Mario gigantic, after which you can just mindlessly run through blocks and enemies. Here's hoping that doesn't get over used. It's hard for me not to look forward to this, as it is a new 2D Mario after, what, 10 years or so (Longer if you're one who doesn't count Yoshi's Island)? At the same time though, I feel skeptical as to whether or not Nintendo still has it in them to make a decent sidescroller. I guess their first chance to prove themselves in that comes when Super Princess Peach is released next week. |

Hmm.. It's hard for me to tell based on one level, especially since I'd guess it's an early level in the game.
I agree, it'd be nice to know what Super Princess Peach is like, but for me that would require buying a DS, which I don't plan to do right now. "Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood." -Orwell |

IGN has a pretty detailed description of Super Princess Peach.

some rather unfavorable quotes:
"There are tons of similarities that can be found in SPP that resemble Super Mario World, though the entire mechanic is a bit dumbed down (for lack of a more suitable word)." "Super Princess Peach feels like a combination of Super Mario World, Wario World, and Yoshi's Story. In fact, most of the game is actually closer to Yoshi's Story than anything else, offering bright colors, a picture-book style of art direction, and bright and cheery music." "I'm not saying this was the intention of the design, but it does seem like a girls game made by guys." i was almost hoping for a serious platformer with a welcome twist. that said, i'm pretty gullible. this game looks like another "innovation" that redesigns nintendo's look but doesn't address the shallow gameplay. |

Here's my condensed version:
Quote: Yeah, I won't be buying a DS for this game. Nor does it bode well for any other sidescroller Nintendo might be making. "Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood." -Orwell |

On a more positive note, the DS game looks like most other Mario games to come before it. So what if you can skip portions of a level by way of cannon? You could do that in Super Mario World, too. It's not like you're skipping the whole thing. Also, I think someone mentioned just growing into a giant Mario and stomping through a level. I'd be surprised to find that it isn't just a twist on star power. If you think about it, every major Mario release has had a way to skip through large areas of some levels. They were fun, too!

Re: Video of New Super Mario Bros. (DS) | |||||
Quote: Actually, that's been cited numerous times around here as being one of the flaws of Super Mario World - that you can fly right over entire levels with the cape or Blue Yoshi. But in SMB3 you could sometimes fly partially over levels, so I agree that the cannon may not necessarily be a flaw since it looks to me like you only skip a small portion of the world...perhaps no different than taking the first pipe in Super Mario Bros. But it's really hard to tell much of anything from a clip of just one (probably early) level.

Yeah. I'm not much of a fan of Super Mario World.
I am a big fan of Super Mario Bros. 3, and, yes, it is theoretically possible to fly over some stages in that game. But I think what that proves isn't "It's okay to have a game let you skip parts of its levels" but rather "You really have to keep stuff like that under control." So, you could skip an entire level with a p-wing in SMB3, but those were very rare. (If you didn't know about the white houses -- and for a while, I wasn't sure how they worked; I thought you also needed to collect both 1-ups in 1-4, for instance -- there might only be a couple in the game). Flying requires a take off space, and, unlike SMW, can't be done forever. And fortress stages and such had ceilings that pretty much prevented any flying at all. For a game that hasn't been released yet, there's no way of telling how it could be executed. "Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood." -Orwell |

I think it looks too much like Super Mario All-Stars. I'd like to see another Mario sidescroller, don't get me wrong, but I'd also like to see a new art style, especially after Yoshi's Island.

I thought you said Yoshi's Island sucks.
Anyway, I can't help but feel a little overjoyed to see a Mario sidescroller with blocks again. I agree it's just too early to say if it'll be good or mediocre though. |

It's being released May 7th in the US, far earlier than I thought.

I find it slightly amusing that the new Zelda game is being delayed and delayed, but the new Mario game seems to be coming out quickly.
Is it because they don't care to really polish the Mario game? Do 2D games simply require less time to make? Both, perhaps? "Perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood." -Orwell |

Something about it seems like Super Mario Land in All-Stars clothing. Maybe it has something to do with the relatively flat level design shown in that particular video.

This game is being produced and directed by Takashi Tezuka, who produced Yoshi's Story.

I guess this is a full list of the games he worked on and how he was involved. It's a mixed bag, but he seems to have had an important role in the creation of some great games. |

Yeah. He's worked on so many different games of varying quality it's hard to say if the fact that he produced Yoshi's Story (or any other game) even means anything.

There's new videos up on IGN. There's a good chance you'll have to sit through one of the God awful PSP advertisements first, though. It's like a nut you can play with outside, shut the fuck up!
Anyway, the videos are nice quality. It does all look pretty easy, but I'm still hoping a lot of this stuff is from fairly early in the game. media.ds.ign.com/media/68...ids_1.html |

YES!! You can clearly see the stage number on the bottom screen in these videos, and in one case, the map screen. They're.... from world 1!
