Led Zeppelin admitted that "Stairway to Heaven" doesn't have any real meaning, but I think you can get meaning out of it...except for this line, which I've never understood:

"If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now
It's just the spring clean for the May Queen."

For years I thought I was hearing that line wrong, but I've looked it up and several lyrics sites confirm that's what it is.

I have that problem a lot of times, too. I never understood any of the lyrics of "She Drives Me Crazy" until someone posted them on a message board. And I had no idea what "My World Crumbles When You Are Not Here" was until someone posted it.

Any song from the sixties that was written when the artists were on drugs, particularly some of the Beatles songs like "I want to be under the sea in an octopus's garden", "Strawberry fields forever", "Lucy in the sky with diamonds", "We all live in a yellow submarine", and let's not forget "Obladi, oblada, la, la, la, la, life goes on."

Normally, I'd say Ventura Highway, but the other day I heard this song where this woman was singing, "There are clowns in my coffee, clowns in my coffee", and that takes the cake, as far as I'm concerned.

I think the entire point of some of these songs is that they're not supposed to make sense. Blinded By the Light strikes me as something someone wrote just to see how long they could keep their rhyme scheme going. And other stuff makes sense once you know what the metaphor is. Hotel California is like that.

I just realized upon hearing it this morning that the song you must've heard was Carly Simon's "You're so vain", but the line is "Clouds in my coffee", not "clowns"..

Which reminded me...I actually misheard a different lyric in that song the first time I ever paid any attention to the lyrics - I misheard "wife of a close friend" as "wife of a clothespin", which I knew made no sense, but couldn't understand what she was really saying.
