I just had to go back to the latest version of Quicktime since apparently iTunes doesn't work at all without it, and I don't want to switch to another music program right now. This means I probably won't ever be able to play Riven, but I'd probably not have the patience for it anyway.

It might be awhile before I get back into Airforce Delta Strike. I'm just feeling more into drawing right now. And when I do go back to it, I'm almost contemplating starting the game over again and using (geez, I forget his name? Holst?) every chance I get to see if I unlock another plane for him that might make that ice floe mission easier. Another option is that at the point I was given that ice floe mission, I had two other missions available to me...I could try those first, too, and see if maybe finishing them does something for me.
That mission just seems impossibly difficult, and I have to think there's something I'm missing...I'm sure with enough practice I'd get through it eventually, but the other missions become so easy once you know what to do, that I could probably get back up to that point within one night of playing. Oh, yeah, I've been enjoying watching Crawl play Earthbound on and off since it's one of my favorite games. Sometimes he reads the funnier dialogue out loud and I like being reminded of it. I also like hearing the songs from the game that I actually like. Two of my favorites are the Kraken battle music (the one that's sort of electronic) and the Fourside theme.

I entered the cave beneath the Tenda village. It seemed like it could be mazelike, but I didn't bother exploring all the paths. I fairly quickly found the Electro Specter. His shield helped kill a couple of my characters (Paula and Poo), but I revived Poo and used Poo's Healing Omega to completely heal Paula. Eventually, his shield disappeared, and I had Paula hammer him with her freeze attack.
That led me to "Your Sanctuary" 7, the lumine hall, which was filled with glowing, cartesian lichens. When Ness entered the hall, the lichens spelled out, in dot matrix text, Ness's thoughts, which were filled with doubt. After that, I fell down a hole, which led to what could be a surprise: A world where Ness and his friends are about 5 pixels on a side. They need to be so small so the dinosaurs can fit on the screen at normal size. I found a village of Tendas there. It was a small fenced-in area, and they call the rest of the world the dinosaur's cage (but a younger one said that those who think the village is "outside" and the rest is a cage are just "spewing from [their] cake holes") I apparently haven't missed any "Your Sanctuaries" till now, and only have one more left to reach, which should be nearby. |

finally completed FF3(US version). i guess i overtrained them a bit, since i defeated kefka rather quickly on the 2nd try. (on the 1st attempt, i tried using the weaker characters first, but they all got killed fighting the 3rd sub-boss.) kefka seems to be more easier to defeat than the 3 sub-bosses before him. would be even faster if i didn't get edgar killed just before fighting kefka. guess kefka just has much lower HP than the other 3 which have multiple "heads" to defeat. and he don't remember him ever healing. i kinda hate the ending, cause shadow seems to have commited suicide. all the time i spent training him up to be a versatile magic & physical killer... damn. i expected terra to die, not him! and what the f$ck happened to gogo after he dropped into some hole? did he perish too? don't remember seeing him/her/it on the airship.the heck. i found gogo and umaro too damn weak to use in that tower. all in all, a fun game. more challenging and more stuff to do than Chrono Trigger. i would say it's much superior game compared to CT if it wasn't so buggy in some parts of it.

I started Mega Man 5 (because Lufia's going to drive me nuts if I don't juggle it with something else) and I've already beaten Crystal, Napalm, and Gyro Man. I beat Crystal first, but found Gyro was a lot easier with just the Mega Buster.

Quote: This is another question that seems to get answered on this board at least once a month. At the very last moment when Setzer makes the airship fly forward, you can see Gogo and Umaro at the back of the airship, but only for a second before the screen fades to black. Unless they've changed it on other versions, that's how it is on the SNES. I should probably get a save state and screencap it for proof.

Finished the first episode of Sam & Max. I'd estimate it had 3 hours of gameplay. I'm downloading the second one now. I think the idea is to release one per month until they reach a full season of six, then maybe do another season in the future.

I watched some He-Man and the MST3K Wild Wild World of Batwoman.
He-Man is just getting more and more fucked up. In the first episode I watched, the one about the Underwater City, Adam is first seen chasing some giggling girls around the palace while blindfolded (???), and he grabs his father (???). The next one had Teela exiling herself to a desert because she teleported Man-At-Arms to somewhere other than the Royal Palace, boo hoo. Then finally, there was Dree Elle and Orko's music number in the episode about the Horn of Evil. Batwoman was another dry at the beginning, riot at the end MST3K. |

I made it to the boss of the 8th "Your Sanctuary" (first, the Coal Dog, then the Diamond Dog), and got a game over against him.
I gained a level or two for the heck of it, and tried again. I also don't know if I realized that Ness had Lifeup Omega, which heals everyone (to maximum, it seems) on one turn. I also learned a little bit about the fight from the first attempt. I tried to keep the pressure on him, because, first of all, if his shield takes enough damage, it'll be destroyed, and secondly, any turn he spends remaking the shield is a round he won't attack. When the shield was destroyed, I had Paula use freezing omega, and otherwise continued to try to keep the pressure on. I did, however, keep healing characters when their status was changed. At the end of the battle, Poo had (a worthless) 2 PP. The 8th "Your Sanctuary" was Fire Springs. After that, I went to Magicant, a city created in Ness's mind. I found a save point there, so that's it for the night. |

If you want a bit of non-spoiler advice, highlight: The shop in Magicant sells an amulet, I believe it's called "Earth Pendent" or something. Magicant is the only place you can get that, and I believe it's the best Accessory equipment in the game. If not, it's still extremely helpful, so pick up one for each party member.

I just remember another gaming experience from last night.
I had to do some work yesterday, but it was the sort of thing that only needs sporadic, not constant, attention. My brother also wanted help with his taxes and a take-home math exam, so I picked him up, took him to work, and helped him with those in the meanwhile. We finished with his stuff before my stuff was finished, so we just chatted for a bit. He has Link's Awakening, and has been progressing through it on his own, but he told me he was stuck, and had been stuck, perhaps for months, on the Eagle's Tower, and asked, would I be able to help him? I thought so, since I tend to remember puzzles that stumped me. However, when he started describing it, it sounded very complex. After a lot of set up, involving first walking through rooms with those blocks that move up and down, depending on whether you hit an orb elsewhere in the dungeon, it seemed the crux of the matter was: He already knew to throw the balls at the pillars (to me, that by itself seemed to be the entire key to the dungeon). But one ball was at the end of a long horizontal pit. You could cross the pit by hookshoting across to a treasure chest. However, you couldn't throw the ball across the pit. If you tried, it would go almost all the way across, but would then fall in. I told him I didn't remember that part at all, and it didn't sound like something I got stuck on. When I dropped him off later, he wanted to know if I could at least take a look at that part, so I did. It turns out that what you had to do was, grab the ball, walk "north" so you're above the pit, and rather toss it longways across, toss it across the skinny part. He told me he never even thought of doing that. So, maybe that's interesting, maybe not. I noticed his file is at 200+. I think after Earthbound, I might want to not play another game until I can finish another review. It'd be fantastic if I could finish one game a month, and review one game a month. That might not happen, but it's good to have goals, right? I think the next game I'd play after that might be Jackal, for the NES. I'm interested because -It's an NES game. -It's not a sequel, nor does it have a sequel. -It's not a game that already has a lot of opinions out in circulation. -An action game might be good after a long RPG. And maybe other reasons, too. |

In Final Fantasy 6, right before the cinema of the airship flying high up into the sky and "THE END" rolls up onto the screen, there's one last scene of everyone aboard the Falcon. Setzer, IIRC, raisies his hand, rears back, and the ship jolts forward. Watch the very back of the airship on the right side of the screen and you'll see Gogo and Umaro standing back there. The only character that does not appear on the ship, no matter if you saved him or not, is Shadow. Shadow goes his own way in the tower as that's always been the way he is.
I didn't like Earthbound too much but these posts are almost making me want to play it again... Uh-oh. James is ticked off now. Stand back...HE'S A NUT!! |

I got through Magicant. FO said it can be one of the harder parts of the game, but it didn't seem like much to me.
After that, I went to Onett, which was emptied of its citizens by Giygas. I don't think it's possible to play that part and not think of the town of Leaf from Crystalis. Anyway, that part seemed more difficult, but, while Paula died a few times there, I still got through it on my first try. |

Watched the new Simpsons and Family Guy last night. It was the first new Simpsons I've really laughed at in a while. And Family Guy was better than average as well. Still can't watch American Dad and King of the Hill is okay if I find it on TV randomly, but I don't like to sit there and watch it on a regular basis.
I played a little bit of Castlevania Bloodlines on Gametap, just messing around. I was really surprised by how nice it looks, though. Genesis games have a tendency to seem ugly to me, but this looked much better and played more smoothly than CV4 from what I encountered. |

Quote: I never once thought of Leaf when I played through that part. However, the people in Onett are still there. It's just that they've all retreated to their houses and locked the doors. That's why you can bang on everyone's doors but no one answers. They're all too scared to come out. You can still enter Ness's house, though. Magicant has never given me trouble on replays, but my level might have been lower than yours currently is when I first got there and sometimes the enemies that appear on the zigzagging pathway to the Sea of Eden can be overwhelming. I used up all the Flying Men my first time through. Another thing is that I think I might not have had the Frankling Badge with me for some reason which made those enemies with the lightning attacks harder to deal with. Magicant is more important storywise, anyway.

I just played some Super Mario World on Wii. I probably shouldn't have purchased it, but it was an impulse thing back when I got Mario Kart 64. Anyway, I made it to the Vanilla Dome ghost house... and I'm already up to around 30 extra lives, without making any special effort to earn them. It's kind of ridiculous at this point. And of course, this game has that one level with the easiest way to earn infinite lives since SMB1's glitch, but at least in SMB1, it wasn't on purpose.
And the cape is just too useful, aside from skipping over levels which I'm not doing, it's range and power are just too much compared to the raccoon powerup in SMB3. I should play this game multiplayer with my sister again. She's not really big on gaming, but she's pretty good at this one and it's a lot more entertaining with someone else. I'm still not really sure what else I want to play. I'm kind of losing interest in Rayman now for some reason. I haven't played an Xbox 360 game in freaking forever, but I'm not sure if I'm ready for Gears of War. |

i've been playing earthbound again. must be like a year since i've last played it. those weird fonts of the mr saturns are drving me loopy. oh hell paula died again. seems impossible to keep her alive in any dungeon without a teddy bear. wonder if i can back track to 2town just to stock up on teddy bears and get escargo express to store em back home. using jeff as a combat item storage/user. his bash is almost useless on the tougher monsters, same thing with its unique item , the bottle rocket. i imagine this game would be a hell lot harder if i wasn't playing with a hacked rom which forces me to cheat with an invincible ness with unlimited PP. i read skip sandwich is suppose to restore PP, but it never does. don't know about skip sandwich DX.

Re: Game Progress Topic 73

I think there's some kind of item in the game (might be one of the Sandwiches) that is supposed to work like a fortune cookie in the sense that you have no idea what benefit you'll get from it until you use it. The only effects I've ever seen from the Skip Sandwiches is that it increases your HP a little and then makes you walk faster for several seconds. They're good for sneaking past enemies if you really want to but other than that, not very useful.
I really need to play this game again, if only to eat my words in my review about the trees in the swamp being different from everywhere else as FO pointed out to me a long time ago. Uh-oh. James is ticked off now. Stand back...HE'S A NUT!! |

That may be so. I could have sworn I did the "correct" thing on my second try, but FO said I probably did it during the wrong phase.
My file was at level 80 by the end (but I went up to level 84 by the time I won), while FO's (for the first one) is at 85. She said she might have played more after the ending. I found the strategy guide, so I might look through that for a while.. |

Re: Game Progress Topic 73

I started Earthbound on the third, so finishing it tonight meant it took ten days. That's long, but I'm sure it's not an 80 hour game or anything.
I do think I can definitely say I like Final Fantasy and Might and Magic more. I was comparing this game to Chrono Trigger with FO IRL. She said she thought Earthbound was a lot harder. She might not have gotten game overs in Chrono Trigger until the final boss. I probably got more game overs in Earthbound, too, but it didn't seem MUCH more challenging. You might get zero game overs in a dungeon in Chrono Trigger, whereas in Earthbound you might get one. The one part in Earthbound where it seemed like they might have been going for something a little more challenging was the department store. The final boss was okay, too. As far as surviving, he doesn't seem to be very difficult (I got to the final form, I believe, every time I fought him), but there's a trick to it. The game also intertwines the story with the boss battle. As has been said, it's similar to Final Fantasy 4, but EB has a few of its own things. The game's battle-graphics style really reaches its apex with Giygas. But to go back to Chrono Trigger, even if I might have gotten fewer game overs, I think its battle system still had me just about as involved as EB's, if not moreso. Yes, EB's roll-down HP meter adds some sense of time and urgency, but it really is only important in the second half of the game at most. Without question, I liked Chrono Trigger's soundtrack more. I'm not sure about Pokey. I don't think it makes sense that a little kid is a villain. Yes, he was influenced by Giygas, but the sense I get from the game is that you're supposed to dislike Pokey himself. But, come on, he's maybe 13 years old. How responsible can he really be for anything? And he seemed not too unfriendly at the beginning of the game, before he fell under Giygas's influence, and his rescue of his brother showed his heart at least could sometimes be in the right place. I know that EB is sort of supposed to be based on Itoh's childhood. I wonder if Pokey represents some childhood bully Itoh couldn't get over. |
