notice is that the entry is incapable of defining what a syllable is. The
best they can do is give a single example. Almost the entire article (especially the section after the introduction) is completely incomprehensible.

The article on syllabification states

FO didn't say it in that thread, but she hears marry, merry and Mary as distinct.
I was trying to get her to pronounce them for me so I could hear the difference, but I felt like someone from Japan trying to hear the difference between lake

Anyway, the smallest sound unit in a word is definitely not a syllable. It's a phoneme.

That's the confusing thing. I think (?) we would all agree that the "t" at the end of "dreamt" represents a distinct phoneme from the
rest of the word, regardless of its syllable status.

I'll come up with more examples! I think terminal s's and hard sounds often become tumor syllables.

Wrecked. Supposedly, one syllable. I can easily divide it up into wreck't.

Do I exaggeratedly slow it down like "wreck - tah"? No, but I don't divide up acknowledged syllables, either. A polysyllabic work like
"polysyllabic" still comes out in one smooth pronoucniation.

reading somewhere that dreamt isn't even a word and the correct grammar is "dreamed", but online dictionaries do have it. (Firefox underlines
it.)

I would define a syllable as when you stop making one sound and have to make another.

The word "Syllable" has three syllables. "sil" is one sound, "a" is another sound, "bul" is the third sound. You may
not have to open and close your jaw all the way to go from "sil" to "a", but you have to move it somewhat to form the new sound.
