I agree that if someone's a bully, it doesn't necessarily mean that that person has a bad home life, but I'd say it's true often enough to understand why someone would come to that conclusion.

While we're on the subject of bullying, I might as well mention another such myth that has always pissed me off. (Based on what she said, I'm guessing it has been pissing off Flying Omelette, too.) That myth is, "Just ignore them, then they'll stop bullying...

The fat kid getting bullied is probably another stereotype. But I don't think being fat has much to do with having a good or bad home life.

Yeah, I guess that would be appropriate. It always seemed wrong to me because in my school it was the fat kids that got picked on, not did the bullying. It's not always students that get failing grades that do it.

I think the more appropriate term for the bully thing is "Stereotype" rather than "Myth."

The most notorious bully in my high school was a short, skinny stoner kid. I don't know how he managed to intimidate so many people, but I think he could sense vulnerability a mile away, and he capitalized on it. I think what he did was give a little "test" jibe and see how a person reacted. If that person seemed intimidated, he would focus on them.
