Couple of interesting quotes about Japanese gamers. I don't get it though because aren't there lots of difficult and/or confusing Japanese games?

"People think [foreign games] are difficult and there's no guidance on how to clear the objectives," one Japanese game designer said. "Now
that has changed, and they are much easier to play, but this bias remains among Japanese gamers."

Well, how much can you reduce an entire country to one set of preferences? I think if a magazine tried to describe "American gamer preferences" that
I would feel the description did not apply to me.

But maybe there are some real differences between Japan and America regardless. I don't think rape simulators have the same market in America...

i agree with ama, and jap-styled games tend to have more elaborate stories and characters, at least when comparing older "western" games to their
contemporary jap ones (not including graphic adventure games which are all about stories, characterisation, and maybe puzzles).

i'm just guessing mmos aren't as popular in japan, because their gamers are anti-social, or maybe they're classy enough not to be attracted to
games which attracts mostly idiots. as for...

In my own experience, it's more simplicity in control than in direction. I play a lot of imports, and most of them tend to have much easier control layouts
than your average FPS, focusing more on just making the game accessible than making it complex. FPS's and western PC-styled RPGs (such as Neverwinter
Nights) definitely don't carry the same kind of weight over there, though... then again, they don't with me either. American players seem to have more
