Well, he wasn't the only critic that liked it and he didn't give it four stars or even 3-1/2. His review could probably have lived without those lines
that suggest the only reason people wouldn't like it is because there's not enough action in it, though.

It might also be worth noting that the two critics I read the most often, James Berardinelli and Qwipster, both gave it negative reviews.

If it was just a fluke movie he happened to like and the rest of his scores seemed rational it would be one thing. But as things are, I think it's so funny
that Ebert gave The Happening 3 stars.

[T]he [Oscar] winner was that piece of crap, "No Country for Old Men, the story of a guy with a bad haircut chasing a guy with a mustache for 140
minutes, that leads to no ending at all.

Reading positive reviews of that movie leaves me with a feeling of "What's the point?" Ebert's goes on and on about how
perfect it is, but I didn't pick up on anything tangible. I imagine the acting and directing might be good, but what good does...

Ebert mentioned this:

It was a time of wonders, an autumn of miracles, one of the best years in recent movie history. One great film after another opened, and movie lovers found
there were two or three, sometimes more, must-see films opening on a weekend. I gave up rationing my four-star ratings and went with the flow.

It's like the videogame reviewers' excuse for giving that so many high scores: There REALLY ARE that many...

What's great is you can now ask, "I wonder how many four star reviews Ebert wrote this week?"

This week it was two, but I don't think it's been zero since his health improved.

Berardinelli, on the other hand, has 10 days left in the year, and still no four star score awarded.

Stephen King once called out movie reviewers for giving too many four star ratings. He said the reviewer should ask himself before giving four stars, "Is
this movie really as good as The Godfather?"

Ebert's response was, "If I applied that standard to giving out four stars, then it might be months or years between when I could give that
score."

Yes, that's exactly the point!

I think it's interesting that the "New Reviews" section is empty. Maybe they didn't want to have all those 4-star ratings right on top of one
another in one little section, but it's probably just a glitch.
