Actually, I do have a trick that I use when I set my high scores (but I don't always use it, hence not always improving my score). Since it's not like I have the world record score on minesweeper, what the hell, I'll share it. I think it's different than what people with faster times use, anyway.

I mark as many mines as possible. Like, if I could mark 5 mines, and clear 10 blocks, I should not first clear any of the blocks, but mark all of the mines.

I played 204 for, apparently, two years with no success. I went back to normal minesweeper. It looks like I just slightly beat my old record for expert:

The weird thing is that it didn't feel like an especially fast run to me. I was not rushing. I was almost shocked when the high score window came up. Obviously, for Beginner, highscores are a matter of luck. I think...

Oh, and I was playing this while on the phone with my brother. I had a 50-50 chance and he told me to click the one on the left. So, I guess he gets partial credit.

Funnily, I got a better time on 203 than I did on 202.

Ah...so this is where this thread went. Congrats, Smoosh. I still haven't managed to do 200. My expert minesweeper time is something like 150 seconds.

By the way, my time record for expert mode is 113 seconds. Supposedly, that's nothing special. I saw a site that claimed a minesweeper expert should be able to beat expert mode in less than 60 seconds, which I currently find unfathomable, as I seem to be more limited by clicking speed than anything. However, I've gotten beginner mode down to 4 seconds, which of course requires a lot of luck -- the mines are so clumped that most of the board clears itself -- and I suppose a similar thing...

Damnit!!!! I just got 200 down to a 50/50.

I actually had to guess two 50/50s on the bottom right. But the top left got me.

Wow, I hate the graphics in that version of minesweeper. I've seen that version on a couple of computers, but it's so ugly and difficult to see I find it nearly unplayable. (None of the other 3 or so versions I've seen bug me)

Damn!

A 200 mine game, and I got it down to 2 mines and a 50-50 chance. If I would have picked the other square, I would have won.

You'll notice there's very little open space in that picture (continuous patches with neither mines nor numbers). I can tell when I'll be able to get close to winning because there won't be very much open space. When there is, the mines that vacated that space must go...

The hardest part was in the bottom middle. I'd gotten extremely close on this one several times. I guess this just means it's possible to go even further.

Last night before going to sleep, I got 194:

I had been trying to get 193 for a long time - a couple of months. I wondered if 194 might be easier, due to the even number of mines. That reasoning probably has no merit, but I still haven't been able to get 193.

Inspired by the google search for freecell, I tried to find if anyone else was playing custom minesweeper. I found only one page, of someone who beat it with 200 mines. I guess I'm not too far behind. (I also found one other page where someone suggested 3 mine settings for the largest custom fields - two I've surpassed, one I haven't, but there's no indication...

The expert minesweeper game has a playfield of 16 x 30 blocks, with 99 mines, for, on average, 4.84 squares/bomb.

The maximum custom playfield is 24 x 30, and you can add potentially add more bombs than you could possibly clear. Even if you "only" had enough bombs for their to be about as many squares per bomb as in expert mode (about 149 mines), it should be harder than expert mode, because the larger size would mean there's a higher chance of ambiguous mine placements (meaning...
