One weird thing occurred to me about Will Ferrell is that it's possible to remember the names of the characters he plays in movies.

Like, for Jim Carrey, who did he play in Liar, Liar? My best guess: The Liar, Lair guy. What was the real name of the guy in the Mask? The Cable Guy doesn't quite count, because I do remember that you never learn his real name in that movie.

In The Truman Show? I guess his name must be Truman, but hell if I can remember if that was...

I wouldn't say that it's been too intelligent so much as that it referenced political scandals of minor figures too often. The sketches basically "comically" retold those scandals using charicatures of those people, and it wasn't really all that clever, so that wasn't a problem. I think part of it's my own bias against political humor, just because it's seemed to become more and more pervasive in the last decade or so, with shows like the Daily Show and...

Fair enough. I hadn't really been watching the show a couple of years ago. For that matter, I don't watch it much now, but when I do, the jokes seem based on silliness, not satire. I've heard plenty of complaints that the show isn't funny, but I don't know if I had ever heard it implied that it was "too intelligent".

Actually, up until Tina Fay (Fey?) was let go as head writer, most shows I saw (which up until about two years ago would have been the majority) featured realistically about 2/5 of the sketches dedicated to political satire, maybe even more than that, which for a single show is high-percentage, especially in comparison to earlier years with casts such as the not ready for prime time players. Some people probably enjoy that more, but I don't. I mean, I enjoyed some other bits such as...

I google searched "dear john doormat" and noticed it brought up some UK sites. That made me suspicious that the show might've been based on a British comedy (like some others are, such as Sanford & Son and Whose Line is it Anyway?), and sure enough, a quick investigation at imdb reveals it was based on a UK sitcom by the same name that only lasted two seasons. So, maybe it's more of a "British" thing than an "adult" thing, but I've said it...

I was looking for the "doormat" thing online, but not only is it (seemingly) not on Youtube, IMDB doesn't even have any memorable quotes from the show!

It must be because fans of the show are too old to have a computer or be internet savvy.

It may seem like I'm unfairly taking a joke out of context with that "DOORMAT!" thing. There are times when a character yelling something can be funny (Crawl pointed out that it was funny when George Costanza would yell, "Serenity now!", and I sometimes use that type of humor in my own writing). But there are differences that include:

1. Comedic presence and timing. A good actor with pinpoint timing can make something like that funny. Not just anyone...

I think that the only Will Ferrell sketches that actually made me laugh were his Harry Caray bits and one with Pierce Brosnan where he was an airline magazine editor named Mr. Tarkanian.

People have suggested that's why Arrested Development was not a (financial) success. It didn't have the canned laughter, so people didn't know where the jokes were, or where they were supposed to laugh.

I stopped watching Saturday Night Live a long time ago, so I don't know much about Will Ferrell. I do vaguely remember the cheerleaders sketches as being one of the last things I saw before I quit watching it. I also remember that girl that was always putting her hands in her armpits and showing off her underwear. I mean, c'mon, half the people I know on the internet can come up with funnier jokes than that!

It's kind of hard to believe that the Roger Ebert who once was hard-pressed to find a laugh in any of the Jim Carrey flicks is now the same Roger Ebert that's praising crap like Anchorman. I like most of Jim Carrey's movies and some of Adam Sandler's, but Will Ferrell just sucks.

I think there's a good chance he might be losing it, and I have an idea why.

He's been reviewing movies since the late '60's. By now, there's a lot of hindsight on those older movies. He had given a lot of movies that later achieved classic (or at least cult) status scores that were either relatively low, or just plain low.

I've actually laughed at Adam Sandler.

Will Ferrell is the most un-funny guy I've ever seen.

Actually, he manages to go past the "un funny" mark on the funny scale and into "fucking annyoing idiotic jackass" territory (see Billy Madison). I first acquired a dislike for him with those stupid "Spirit Squad" skits on SNL, and it's gone downhill from there.

Anchorman? Elf? Old School? Who considers this type of stuff funny? How much talent does it take to act like a...
