Nightmares and Dreamscapes was a bit mixed. But it was (and is) his largest short story collection, and in that length there was room for all kinds of stories, of differing types and qualities, and the best stories in that book were still very good.

But wasn't that already pretty much the point of X Men 2? He was in that government experiment that injected adamantium into his bones.

So, how much has to be explained? That alone is more backstory than most of the other characters. But for some reason for Wolverine, that's not enough. After you know his backstory, you need to REALLY know his backstory.
